Good morning 'Catters...Yesterday I went to an auction and bought a lot of six guitars which included a Martin D12-2832 12 string guitar with Shenandoah stamped on the head piece under the C.F. Martin logo...the action is superb and the sound very deep and balanced...I am not familiar with this instrument so I came to "The Source" for some details and guidance...thanks in advance for your help.

Uncle(LoveThemGeetars)Toad

other guitars in the lot...

Taylor 555 12 string
Yamaha FG412 12 string
Crafter D8/N 6 string
Alvarez AC60S 6 string classic
Yamaha FG75 6 string

D2832
Solid spruce top, Rosewood back and sides, Ebony fingerboard and bridge,
thinline 332 pickup.

These are really Sigma Martin Guitars made in indonesia. They are absoloutly brilliant.

If you are thinking of selling I may well be interested.

Actually, my understanding is that the Shenandoahs were essentially built in Asia, but shipped to the US as separate unfinished bodies and unfinished neck assemblies, and completed at the Martin plant in Nazareth. I believe they all had solid wood tops and laminated (i. e. high grade plywood) backs and sides, and all came with Fishman pickups built in.

I agree that they are "absoloutly" brilliant, although I don't think they're loutish at all. I had a D-2832 quite a few years ago that is one of the several guitars I kick myself for ever getting rid of. It had quite an extreme "v" shape to the neck that was very comfortable for me, and tone and power equal to many "real" solid wood Martins, especially the ones back then.

Are you keeping the whole lot, or putting any of them up to sell?

Peter.

Wellyas, Indonesia is asia. They are true martins in as much as sigmaare, they use the same plans, construction, timbers and production methods, but they are shiped to nazereth for final set up ( which is not much)

It sounds like a nice auction to go to. Next time they have some mandolins give me a call.

Thank you...YES...the Taylor 555 is for sale...guitar is in mint condition...hard case is in excellent condition showing some wear and a few scrapes...The guitar is set up perfectly...the action is perfect and it plays notes all the length of the neck (staff) as easily and sweetly as the best 6 string that I have ever played (and that includes Taylors, Collings, Martins, Guilds, etc)...the list price on Taylor's website is around $2,900.00 (also very good photos)...I am asking $1,500.00 plus shipping.

I have a number of Martin guitars, and my understanding of the Shenandoah is it was made in Nazareth, PA by Martin as a low-end product in the Dreadnaught style. They used the same type of components as the D-series, but the wood was not as high a grade. No laminates I was told - just a lower grade of wood. I have played a few of them over the years, but just was not in a position at the time to purchase one. Then, as time went by, I got the Martins. I keep an eye out for a good 12-string version for a camping guitar. Would be perfect for that, and I could then leave my $8000 D12-41 at home. :-)
