Help:

Last year (2004) I was able to make some recordings on my MD recorder, but I've been having troubles with it recently and gave up trying to do it this year.

So I'm begging now to get ahold of some of the recordings that people made this year. Consequenlty, I'm thinking that people can make let people know what they are willing to share, or make requests here in this thread.

I would love to get a hold of:

Roger's Blues workshop
Bobert's mini-concert
Dani's Open Sing
KTs mini-concert
Saturday night
Sunday night
Ron's song Moving on to Old Lethargy (Sunday Night)
and so much more.

Max recorded the Monday Night show in Wilmington and I'm sure will make it available at some point (Max ?)

Does anyone know of a way to make the recordings that people offer up available for download at a central location? I'm sure that they will be larger than the 20 or 30 MB that Geocities or some of the other free website sources provide, and we will quickly exceed their bandwidth limits.

Gutbucketeer

Thanks Mick:

I know Ebbie recorded a lot too.
I've also sent an email to Dennis Cook to see if he saved the Saturday Night Concert off the sound system (one can only hope).

I'd be willing to pay postage and a fee to *buy* any of them that folks are willing and able to copy and I'll bet others who weren't there would be, too. What about a compilation one with proceeds to go to Mudcat/FSGW? (Or, does that sound too complicated and like a lotta work?:-)

As soon as I get my minidiscs 'marked' and ready, I'm going down the hill to a video shop where they turn the discs into CDs. I'll copy the CDs and if I didn't get permission to record from the individuals at the Getaway itself (Not one said NO- but note that I didn't ask Kendall! I didn't tape HIM but I did tape Jacqui. For permission from him, I'm going to sic KT on him. *G*) whenever I can't identify the singer I'll ask on this thread if someone will direct me as to the author.

All the way home I had my headset on listening to the minidiscs. Considering the noise of the airplane engines it was surprising how clearly I was able to hear many of the recordings. I have great hopes for the CDs.

And there are so MANY songs on them that I want to learn!

In particular, I would love a recording of the "Raise the Roof Gospel" workshop to have a chance to learn more of those tunes.

Also, if anyone happened to record me singing "Squeeze Me" at either the Friday night TV room song circle or "to" Leadfingers Sunday night, I will gladly pay for a copy. I want to figure out what happens that I go flat about half the time on that song when I sing it in front of others.

Thanks,

Janie

Jim this is a great idea. I'm just starting to listen to my MD recordings. If any are worth hearing, I'll add them to the overall compilation.

I don't remember what I recorded until I listen to them!

I too would love to hear some of the music sessions I missed, particularly the following:

MINIS - any or all of them!
Remembering Helen Schneyer
Pub Sing

Oh well, since I missed most of every afternoon it's too long a list. I'll happily take most anything that becomes available!

Rita, I recorded the Helen Schneyer session, but I got there a few minutes late and Karen Kobela was about a third of the way through her song. I got the entire rest of the session. I also got the Harmony workshop. I haven't listened to it yet, but my guess is that it is a humdinger. I also have George and Mary LaMarca's workshop on Occupational songs.

MINI's. I have KT and Kath Westra, at least. I will let you know if I have others.

I will try and get them downloaded to the computer and then burned to a disc for anyone who wants them.

All the best,

Mick

JtS took video footage (w/sound) of the squeezebox workshop and the waltz workshop, and also the Saturday night accordion, fiddle, and guitar jam in the dining hall. I think he might have taken some footage of the Friday evening jam in the dining hall as well, but I'm not sure. We haven't yet looked at any of it, so we don't know how it turned out. In summary,

Audio:
It sounds like Ebbie, Ferrara, and Big Mick have some audio recordings on MiniDiscs. I'm pretty sure that Charlie Noble recorded some sessions too. Did Bobert have one of those little gizmos? Haven't heard back from Dennis yet.

Here are some possibilities for sharing the audio recordings.

1. Compile a list of who has what and let it go at that. This would be easy but puts a lot of burden on those that has.

2. Find a central website or repository that has the space and bandwidth to act as a host for mp3's of the audio recordings. Let people upload their recordings to folders within the repository. People that want the audio files could then download what they want. This is a pretty good option if we can find a repository (FSGW, Mudcat, or ???). It's self organizing once its set up and low maintenance. Also, no one has to lay out $ in advance.

3. Similar to #2, but have everyone send their recordings to one or more editors/moderators. They would pick the best single recording of each session or performance and post it to the site. A little more work for some, but would result in the lowest storage requirements (no duplicates) and best audio quality (un-mixed).

4. Have everyone send their recordings to one or more editors/moderators as in #2. The editors would then spend some time cleaning up the files (equalizing, noise reduction etc.) and creating a set of Master CD's. Create one or more distribution vines where the Master's are sent to person 1 on the list, they burn what they want and send them to person 2, and so on. Where they are is tracked by posts to a thread. We did this in the NoveltyMusic Yahoo Group for a set of GOON Show recordings and it worked great. A little more work for the editors but still low cost. Not everyone gets the recordings at the same time.

5. Same as #4 but centralize copying/distribution of the CD's or a "best of" CD. This is A LOT OF WORK for the editors and includes some initial outlay/risk unless pre-orders are taken and no extra CD's are made. Costs only could be covered, or prices set to make some $ for Mudcat.

I personally think option 3 (if we can set up a site that meets the storage and bandwidth needs), or option 4 are the best. I would be glad to investigate hosting options and help in selecting or editing some of the files to inlcude. I don't myself have the time for option #5 or the desire to deal with orders, payments, complaints, etc.

VIDEO:

The options are similar for the video recordings but creating one or two DVDs with edited footage may be more feasible (there is probably less video footage to go through, edit, etc.). I know Tinker took orders and made copies of her videos of the 2003 Getaway. Tinker, how much time/trouble did this take?

InOBU, CarolC/JTS, and Tinker all have some video. They should probably be the ones to decide how they want to edit/copy/distribute them.

JAB

Option #2 sounds good to me, the best of each, from which we could choose what we want, with the understanding that for downloads we send a check to the 'Cat, FSGW, or both. (Amount per song? Per session? Per half-hour?)
Of course now I have to figure out how to download music and put it on CD, or find someone I can pay to do it for me.....

I think we ought to make a DVD, inter-blending the scenes and songs. Mac users can do this fairly easily by playing the cameras directly into iDVD (a Mac app) and building scenes and editing them against sound in the iDVD environment.

I took a lot less footage this year cause I wanted to be in the thick of it rather than behind the view finder.

Jim's suggestions are good but I think before we decide about any central distribution it would make sense to wait until people listen/watch what they recorded and then check in with a list of what they have?

I'm finding that I would prefer to pre-edit my stuff, take out the arguments about "what key are we playing in" etc and the stuff where people were talking loudly right in front of the mike.

The rest is still not really performance quality in any way shape or form, it's just a great souvenir. Lots of times the mike wasn't central enough to get the lead singer very clearly, etc. So I'll listen and try to catalog what I have, and the quality, and we'll see who can provide a better version.

Don't know if this is the logical first step but it's what I plan to do.

Rita

ps in the meantime we have to find space enough to post our pictures. Dave Diamond also sent me some good photos for posting. Will get them up ASAP.

I believe the recordings I did include The Sea and Other Waters, Parodies, Pub Sing, Saturday Evening Concert, Songwriters Workshop, and Shanties.

I haven't listened to any of this yet but the quality should be as good as what people were doing. The Edirol Wave/MP3 Recorder R-1 is an amazing little machine. However, it will take me weeks to process what I recorded. I agree in general with what Rita has just said.

The key to organizedness, Tw, is post-it notes. Of course, organizing the post-it notes is another thing alltogether.

Did anyone else record any of the Sunday late night singing? My recordings are fun but I just set the mic down and let it run -- I'd rather concentrate on what's happening than try to be a sound engineer at the same time. So they mostly record whoever was closest to the mic. I suspect when I listen I'll find all my recordings are like that...

Rita-

Most of the sound recording that I've listened to does not demonstrate that I was paying any attention to recording levels, but I had a great time. Salvaging a few songs will be a labor of love!

The Sunday evening concert has great recording of Tom Hall and Linn Schultz chorusing on songs; Linn was operating the recorder that evening.

Next year I'll try to be more disciplined, and have less fun!

I have about 8 hours to edit.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Sounds like people are starting to get their recordings in order.

Did anyone get Skarpi's concert or the pub sing?
Also the circle about blackguards and rogues, and the weird spooky songs, up by the barn?
