Woven Wheat Whispers - release news 1st November 2005. I'm pleased to let you know that we have today put up seven new releases distributed by Woven Wheat Whispers with another 15 listed as coming soon (during November). Our development has attracted a lot of artist interest and we have been keen to build on this by getting their releases available quickly and easily so that we can start to build awareness of them. We have many artists working on new albums for the service and reissues possibly in the pipeline that we will announce in coming weeks. No-one (and certianly not us) are making claims about great riches to be had. People have argued for years over this - See Dylan "judas" incident! Rather than try to argue what is or isnt suitable.music in the styles of the following artists would all fit easily into our service. Copper Family Incredible String Band Martin Carthy Woody Guthrie Bellowhead John Fahey Afro Celt Sound System Six Organs of Admittance Dock Boggs Nick Drake Alan Stivell The Pogues Michael Chapman Fairport Convention Sid Kipper All the above are folk music, and possibly all have been accused at some point of not being! The service is suitable for anyone working in an (even remotely) similar field. The aim as I said in earlier posts, is not only to make music available by better known artists, but equally for "new" artists who want to access a wider audience. Mark and I will endevour in every way to promote your music be it something that was previously released and now deleted, a new experimental project or simply a finished demo that you would like to get some feedback for. We are trying to support new and older artists and what a new artist calls folk in all sincerety might not be accepted as such by a traditional artist. We are also trying to include music that is inspired by or connected to folk. This might be like the George Butterworth 'rural song' styled settings of Richard Moult or experimental acoustic inspired by the likes of John Fahey and Sandy Bull etc (who even back in the 60s many never accepted as folk). Then there is the whole area of music that combines folk with influences from the late 60s psychedelia period. We want to be able to include such music but recognise that again, it's not folk in the purest sense, USA mountain songs in the style of Dock Boggs or Roscoe Holcomb some might say are more blues or formative bluegrass, folk-rock of course isn't pure folk. All we're trying to do is recognise that folk has been an evolving form that has taken in other influences and retained its traditional heart. Already it is turning up some incredible music that might otherwise not find release such as an amazing instrumental acoustic folk set from Slovenia with guitar playing comparable to John Renbourn or Adrian Legg. >>I know it is easy to see ulterior motives or something odd in such initiatives, but this is a sincerely meant service that rather than see folk and music inspired by it fade away (as another post here said the other day) we want to provide some support and passion to help it be seen as a contemporary and vital form in its own right. If we stuck to only the purest sense of folk, we would lose the ability to bring artists together across eras and genres and to bring a new set of musicians towards folk music. We're also in active discussion now with a number of traditionally focussed, contemporary folk artists who see this as a viable route for them - I talked with two artists yesterday that everyone here would know and accept as part of folk music in the strictest sense of definition. I know people will say this or that release isn't pure folk but we have to start somewhere. Let me finally say, we actively and specifically do want traditional / acoustic folk and it will have pride of place in the service. We can certainly handle your submissions via mp3 attachment, but due to heavy traffic, postal submissions are preferred. You can send your music as a CD or CDR in any audio format. (we will convert to high quality mp3 for download) With your music, we need all the following Artwork to accompany the download. However if you don't have anything ready, we can prepare something with your approval (with no cost to yourself) A track listing. Sounds obvious I know, but I got a CDR a couple of days ago that didn't have one. Any promotional material you may wish to make available (photos, reviews, web site links, etc) Your email address. In case we need to contact you urgently Your full postal address. Before making your material available for download, we need to send you a documment for signing which confirms you are the owner of the material submitted. (We will NOT offer any music without having received this documment) Any relevent info regarding previous or current availability of your music. IE has it ever been issued? The plan is for every available download to be accompanied by an artist profile / biog which you can read in advance. This section can also be linked to the artist's homepage (if they have one). This section will also contain a small free downloadable sample (aprox 1 min). This will give potential customers the chance to try before they buy. Hopefully this will encourage people to not only download tracks by artists they are familiar with, but also listen to (and possibly investigate) some artists that are "new" to them. Someone has asked how the system will operate. I'll keep this brief, but as always feel free to email for more info. The customer will pay the dowload fee through Paypal or similar. Once payment is received, they receive via email a link to a secure page that they can access for 48 hours. This address will function for 48hours only and will then change. The address is only known to the paying customer. In addition the the "album", the customer will receive artwork and any other material that the artists wishes to offer. The artwork will be pre sized so it can be printed off by the purchaser to fit a standard CD case. All transactions are viewable by the artist and they will receive a copy of all on line transactions on a monthly basis. This way, they can be sure to receive their royalty payment in full. It is vital that this accounting process is transparent and that performers and copyright owners are assured that they are receiving every penny they are due. The days of artists being ripped off by record companies, distributors and via illegal downloads should be long gone, but sadly they remain all too common. However, we are doing everything we can think of to make sure the music makers get the rewards owed to them. Cheers LL |

I am about to launch a new dowload service which will differ considerably from iTunes, Napster, etc in that the music offered will be purely folk music (in it's broadest sense). I wont bore you with all the tech details here, but heres a brief outline. The service will enable you to offer new or older pre - recorded works to the public via a secure server. The artist will receive 50% of the download fee (current industry standard is a miserable 20%). All costs for hosting and publicity will be met from our 50% All due payments will be made on a monthly basis to the musician / artist / copyright holder. All payments will be accompanied with a full royalty statement enabling the artist to check number of dowloads. The artist will be able to link his website too, making this a valuable promotional tool. As I said earlier, the service covers folk in the widest possible tense with no geographical restrictions. Maybe you are a singer songwriter, a shantyman, a group of madrigal singers or a folk consort, your music will be welcomed. Possibly you recorded an LP 40 years ago that has long been out of print or maybe you are a new musician who wants to gain some exposure for a demo album. It doesn't matter. There will be no costs to you whatsoever, and you retain the FULL rights to your material. If this sounds like an avenue you wish to explore, please drop me a line. There are no promises of great riches to be had, but I hope this project will grow over the coming months to become an invaluable folk music resource of benefit to musicians, singers and purchasers of the music we love.
