Every November for the last seven years the Friends Of American Old Time Music FOAOTMAD have had workshops for Old Time fiddle and clawhammer banjo, and this year is no exception. We're bringing the legendary Dwight Diller and Dave Bing from West Virginia, USA to Gainsborough, Lincs for some of the finest possible instruction in these instruments. There'll be two weekends of instruction with a beginner's weekend on 4-6 November and intermediates on 11-13 Nov. Each weekends cost £110 for Foaotmad/BBMA members or £120 for everyone else. The price includes all meals (excellent) indoor camping and car parking. There's a bar in the evenings with as much jamming as you like.

Well, Nick, if you weren't a mere mandolin player you'd have been to one of these workshops yourself and you'd know what I meant. The food of course is made by Robb and Brenda who cater for the Gainsborough Old Time Festival in february - and you know how good that is.

Last year, Dwight and Dave swapped classes for a couple of hours, with Dave teaching banjo and Dwight teaching fiddle - it made a beautiful contrast. I was in the fiddle class, and Dwight's fiddling seems to come straight out of a West Virginia piney wood - you can smell the resin (just like his banjo playing)

Nick - Your MERE because you don't qualify for these workshops by playing banjo or fiddle like us non-mere persons.

Apparently banjo maestro Dwight Diller had a car accident on Saturday, which has left him in hospital with some broken leg bone(s). He'll be OK but he won't make it to the workshop this year. I don't know any more details than that, but I should find out more shortly.
At extremely short notice he's being replaced by Diane Jones the wonderful clawhammer player of the Reed Island Rounders old time string band, past star performers at the Gainsborough Old Time Festival, who has a good collection of British fans. I recently bought a fine instruction DVD of hers called Diane's Favorites, in which she plays tunes with camera work showing her left and right hands. I've jammed with her before, and I'm really looking forward to some good stuff.

Apparently Dwight Diller fell asleep at the wheel of his car 100 yards from his home after a journey. He dislocated his hip with some complications, and he'll need a long recovery. We all wish him the best, and hope we get to see him next year. British clawhammer players owe Dwight an immense amount of technique know-how he's singlehandedly improved they way we all play. If you've never been to his workshop, you've probably learned stuff off someone who has.

I'm looking forward to the Jamming in the evenings after the work stops. I've played with Diane Jones and Dave Bing many times and they're great fun.

Dear Friends,

I'm not sure if you have heard of Dwight's accident last weekend, you will understand if this newsletter is mainly to bring you up to speed and a quick review of Dwight's November Pick of the Month.

A brief update on Dwight's accident and condition: On Saturday, October 29, Dwight was driving back to Brown's Creek retreat from Marlinton, fell asleep at the wheel 100 yards from the house, went off a bank and hit a tree. Two young men saw the accident with one going for help while the second stayed with Dwight till help came. A neighbor called Susanna and I at the shop so I could meet the ambulance at the hospital in Pocahontas County. It took the emergency crew 50 minutes to get Dwight pulled out of the Blazer. From the hospital in Marlinton, Dwight was air-lifted by helicopter to Charleston General Hospital. I'll put the address below.

Dwight suffered a dislocated hip (with some possible complication which I still have not fully grasped). The hip has been put back into place but now must be kept there to mend so Dwight is looking at rehabilitation and bed rest for the next 3 months. We are not sure how or where he will be that whole time, though he will be transferred soon to a hospital in Salem, Virginia, where he has primary care. It is the same medical center where he was hospitalized this past summer.

Dwight of course was unable to go to England this week and Diane Jones was able to pull together all of the necessary details to fill in at the very last moment. Thank you, Diane!

There is no information on any of the workshops still scheduled for December of this year. Dwight of course will not be receiving emails for awhile, so please direct questions to me, [e-mail] and I will find someone who can answer them for you. I am relying on a number of people who will be better able than I to make cancellation decisions with Dwight.

Dwight's hospital address as of today is: Charleston Area Medical Center 5 S--General Hospital 501 Morris Street Charleston, West Virginia 25301. He is in a semi-private room and has a phone: xxx-xxx-xxxx. Diane Jones and Dave Bing are both safely at Gainsborough ready for the beginners workshops tomorrow morning. I'll pop over tomorrow night to see how they're getting on, and maybe play a few. Dave and possibly Diane are coming over to Doncaster on thursday for a session in the Three Horseshoes, the evening before the intermediate workshops (which I'll be at) start. I can't wait.

Wish I could be there on Thursday Ray, but I have to get ready for the weekend and polish up on the tunes that Diane taught us the last time she came over.My two favourits were Rainy day and Paddy on the turnpike.
