Or there's Herga FC in north London - Mon 21st is a singer's night, with Johnny Collins and Graeme Knights as regulars, known for their sea songs and big choruses. Just turn up for a spot. El Greko & I could put you up.

Be sure you have a little extra time to find Cecil Sharp House itself, especially in the evening. The streets there are an incredible maze and you could well be within a block of the building and never find it.

If you go to the Castle Museum, make sure you see The Street. Also, you MUST have a ramble in the Shambles.

The local folk club in York is the Black Swan but I don't know which day it's on.

I think the nearest Catter is probably Bill Sables, so you should PM him.

'Ranger, old pal, you should not miss Sharps when you're in London. It's in the basement of Cecil Sharp House. A good idea is to arrive in the early afternoon, spend time in the library, go out for dinner and come back for the folk club. At least one of the regulars there, Gerry Milne, is very keen on maritime songs.
The Ibis hotels are decent, modern and not expensive places to stay. There are a few around London, including one in Greenwich. www.ibishotel.com is the address.
Check into train travel in advance. In addition to Virgin and other long distance carriers, there are often special fares on regional carriers. You have to poke around a little bit but you can find something.
A trip to Liverpool could be very worthwhile. If that's a possibility, please give me a call and we can talk about it.

Chantey - if you need a local guide for Dorset, let me know... I was born and brought up there.

Farmhouse scrumpy is very nearly a thing of the past, but great if you can find it. Yetminster is a tiny place and not particularly interesting. It wasn't Meryl Streep standing at the end of the Cobb in the film 'French Lieutenant's Woman', but the director. The bit with the cloak is to hide the fact that he had a beard you could hide a badger in. No way would they let anyone as expensive as Streep stand out on the Cobb in that weather!

If you get the chance, drive from Bridport along the coast road to Abbotsbury - it is the most beautiful stretch of road, like a roller coaster but with some stunning views of the cliffs, the Chesil Bank and the sea. Abbotsbury has the Swannery but that may be closed in Nov, a tithe barn which often has various displays (last time I went, it was full of Terracotta Warriors from China!, St Catherine's Chapel on the hill and some lovely sub-tropical gardens with white peacocks. Weymouth is quite interesting, it's where the first black labrador dog and the black death came ashore.... not simultaneously though!

wld has it a little confused. Thomas Hardy was born in Higher Bockhampton (very pretty cottage, even prettier woods behind) and died in Dorchester, in a house he designed, Max Gate. It's hidden well back from the road. Dorchester has a fantastic county museum, but don't bother with either the Tutenkhamun Exhibition or the Dinosaur museum - only 1 authentic exhibit between the pair of them. Market day there is Wednesday but it's been years since it had any animals. They may still have the animal pens though, full of stalls and the auction house was a tearoom last time I was there.

And don't forget, Manitas and I are also in East London and can put you up if necessary.

Waltham Abbey Folk club will be meeting Monday 21st.

We will be having a singaround/feature evening with a 30 minute slot from Andrew and Natasha Gilbert.

It normally goes twice round the room on such a night.

We are on the north eastern tip of London, just off the M25.

Cheap admission (£1.50) and friendly atmosphere.

Sorry can't help with B+B, but Bev and Jerry are right about Museuems. The Castle Museum is very good but the Jorvik (the Viking Museum) is rather touristy with not nearly as much to see.

Sharps kicks off eightish and floorspots are booked on arrival on guest nights and singers nights - I have checked the programme and 22nd November is a singers night , so just the 'ordinary' local crowd there - Like Tom Paley and such ! I might even try to get in myself to lower the tone a bit !

Thak you. These are great ideas. This is my 2nd trip to England, but first time in York and Dorset.. In 2001 I was singing at the Capt. Cook maritime music festival, in Middlesbrough, Marske, Staithes, and Whitby, then spent a day and a half in East london with Micca, and spent a little time in Greenwich, seeing the Cutty Sark. Is anyone familiar with B&B's in York? I've been looking online, and there's lots to choose from. We'll be wanting one that's near city centre and the wall, which isn't hard to find, but if anyone knows of a particularly good, inexpensive one...

What time does the Sharps Folk Club start, Leadfingers? Would I need to contact them beforehand to ask about doing a couple of songs, or do they have signups that night? I missed the Cecil Sharp house the last time, and am interested in going.

see Stratford and see a shakespeare play, where shakespeare was born, and a really beautiful town. The one unmissable about England.

lyme regis is okay though, you can walk down the Cob - a sort of jetty into the sea - - get the video of the French Lieutenant's woman before you go - see if you can do it with as much style as meryl Streep. Its called the Jurrassic coast - they found the remains of pterodactyl and icthyasaurus round there - and there are always less spectacular fossils along the beaches.

Just along the coast is Sidmouth which has a nice little theatre - see Agatha Christie type stuff , if thats your tasse de the.

the other way to the east there is Bridport which has a great arts centre - always something on there. In fact that stretch of England has great folk music. The south west of England is the home of Show of hands - probably England's best folk/ songwriter duo at the moment.

also to the east is Dorchester, the birthplace of Thomas Hardy, poet and novelist. you can see all the Thomas Hardy sites. Get the old video of Alan bates and Julie christie in Far from the madding crowds to get a flavour beforehand. There is a Thomas Hardy cottage where he lived some where near the town - Higher Bockhamton. Also near there is the village of Yetminster - home of the Dorset folk group the Yetties. check out their website - see them if you can - a good introduction to traditional English folk music.

the local drink to try is farmhouse cider, scrumpy - which is sold all over the place - but you have drink it straight away - it doesn't keep, and it IS deceptively strong. NEVER drive afterwards.

that said, have a good time! Nottingham/Derbyshire is my neck of the woods and theres whole load of different stuff to see there. hope this helps.

On the heels of being at a conference in Mobile, Alabama, I'll be taking some vacation time and traveling to England. My travelling companion and I will be in Lyme Regis November 17-19, staying with friends of hers. Then we'll be in York 19-21, then London 21-23. It's a short trip, but the most we can get from our respective jobs at this time. Outside of that general plan, we're open to ideas. We both love history, city and country walks (rain or not), theatre, and the spontaneous stuff of travel, which is why we're not planning every minute of our time beforehand, leaving space open for what might develope. We do, though, want to plan on some things, especially if there's an event going on we should know about, or something you'd think is a must-see. Any ideas and suggestions of where to stay in York and London would be much appreciated, and maybe we can meet up with 'Catters at some point, which would be very nice. If there's a folk club night going on where I might do a free guest spot, that's something else to consider.
