What songs have you heard lately that have grabbed you by the throat, shaken you up and down, and screamed , "SING ME!! SING ME!!" ? What songs have you stumbled over that you just HAD to learn?

    There are three that I'm working on currently and a bunch more that I haven't gotten to yet (some of which have spent YYYEEEAAARRRSSS on the list).

The three:

Fire on the Prairie by Aaron Nathans
This thing is a darned inkblot test. It could be about trains, or stalking, or finding your way in the world, or the settlement of the American West, or any one of a number of other things. The interpertation depends on the singer and the listener.

Boscobel by Nancy Rost
On the surface it's about the impact of the Supermax prison that was built near Boscobel, WI. Beneath that is a wry comment about promises made, promises kept, promises not kept, and promises that shouldn't have been made in the first place.

Old MacDonald's Form by Doug Hamilton
   This is a screamingly funny parody for anyone who hates paperwork.

Some of the one's that I WILL get around to at some point.

"The Scarlet Tide," a song written by Elvis Costello, but I first heard it when the credits rolled for COLD MOUNTAIN. Allison Krauss covered it for the film. Yum.

After seeing Show of Hands for the first time at Bridgenorth Festival this year (Yes really!), I 'borrowed' my Mum's "Country Life" album and the title track along with one called "Suntrap" have very much taken me by the throat and yelled "learn me".
I may never sing them in public as I've since found that Country Life is a weird one for my vocal range and I can't seem to grasp the chords for Suntrap, but they are the recent songs that I have been compelled to learn!

I heard Guy Clark sing "Dublin Blues" last month, ran out and bought the CD and learned it. And whenever I hear a recording by Carol Denney I start singing her songs: "Who Built This House," "Don't Cry for the Tin Man," "Raised to Be a Lady," "Winter and I."

I've been working at the remake/restructured song "Feller From Fortune" You maybe saying "He's gotta be kidding", but The Fables have done a fantastic job of an old Newfoundland number.

I'm doing an evening of songs by George Papavgeris whose songs are osmosing into the English repertoire on Sunday 20th Nov at the Spotlight

last week our national luminaries of Roy Bailey, Martin Carthy and John Kirkpatrick closed a major London concert - att 4000 - with one of George's. A great compliment to the the man's emerging talent.

He's due to appear at the Windward club at the Duke of Marlborough, on Fri 25th Nov in St Albans

Clinton, coincidentally I decided to take a look at this thread while listening to David Francey's latest disc (The Waking Hour). I couldn't agree more; the guy is a great songwriter, with an honest, straightforward manner. I would encourage others who aren't familiar with him to give him a listen.

I have recently added his song "Highway 95" to my performing songlist.
