Subject: Happy! - Oct 24 (Saunders Terrell) From: GUEST Date: 24 Oct 05 - 08:39 AM Happy Birthday! In Greensboro, Georgia and also near Durham, North Carolina: Sonny Terry (Saunders Terrell) was born on 10-24-1911 [thanx Doug Henkle] (d. Mar 11, 1986) As with other seminal musicians, many folk have a story about him. I'm lucky to have two. My favorite was the first time I saw him. He played Child-With-Harmonica in Finian's Rainbow in 1947. Eleven years later I heard him on record playing blues and easily recognized the sound. There was no one else like him. ALSO: Happy United Nations Day! - The United Nations Charter became effective October 24, 1945. United Nations make a chain, Every link is freedom's name. Keep your hand on that plow, Hold on, hold on! From "United Nations," words by members of People's Songs, Music: "Gospel Plow" (traditional) [thanx Steve Suffet] US poet, Sarah Hale b. 10/24/1788 (d. 4/30/1879). She is responsible (culpable?) for "Mary Had a Little Lamb" (1830). Copyright © 2005, Abby Sale - all rights reserved What are Happy's all about? See Notes and Index |
