Subject: Getaway 2005 Shanty Singer ID
From: Charley Noble
Date: 27 Oct 05 - 01:41 PM

As one of the workshop leaders of the Sunday afternoon Shanties Workshop, I'm trying to identify who led the songs I was able to record. Here's my list of shanties in the order they were led, with my best approximation of titles:

GETAWAY 2005 SHANTIES WORKSHOP
Sunday Afternoon
Coordinators: Ken Schatz and Charlie Ipcar

In performance order:

1. Ken Schatz "Stormalong John"
2. Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble) "Whisky-O"
3. Terry Silver (Leadfingers) "Bold Princess Royal"
4. Dick Rogers "Little Sally Racket"
5. Dave Diamond (Tone-Deaf Dave) "Boston Harbor"
6. Tom Hall (Curmudgeon) "Billy Riley"
7. Edmund (CET) "Santeano"
8. Noreen Keene "Bold Riley-O"
9. Stuart Reynolds "Roll Alabama Roll"
10. Barry Finn "Roller Bowler/Good-Bye You Ladies Fair"
11. "John Kanaka"
12. (Lonesome EJ)"Heave Away Me Johnnies/We're All Bound to Go"
13. Jim Bunch (Gutbucketeer) "Alabama John Cherokee"
14. Bill Day (Bill D) "The Ebenezer"
15. Carole (SussexCarole) "Ilo Man"
16. Andrew McKay (Crane Driver) "Heave Away Boys Heave Away"
17. Dick Rodgers "Haul-Away Joe"
18. Barry Schlesinger "Blood-Red Roses"
19. Severn Savage "Hilo Johnny Brown Stand to Your Ground"
20. Theresa Tooley (treaties1) "Good-Bye My Lover Good-Bye" (a capstan shanty from the Great Lakes Sailors)
21. Dan Schatz"Johnson Girls"
22. Barry Finn " Won't You Help Me to Raise 'Im" (w/Ken Schatz and Theresa Tooley)
23. David Diamond (Tone Deaf Dave) "Haul Away for Rosie-O"
24. Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble) "Tanqueray Martini-O"
25. Ken Schatz "Johnny Come Down to Hilo"

I would appreciate any help provided. Also please include the Mudcat name if known.

My intention is to provide a MP3 file to anyone who led a song who would like to hear what was recorded, and a complete CD to the other workshop leader. The recording quality varies greatly, depending primarily on how close the singer was to my equipment and how strong a singer he or she was.

This was a very energizing workshop, with an incredible range of songs and singers. I came in knowing I was half asleep and left at the end ready to sing for another 10 hours!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I sang John Cherokee. It started pretty weak, but picked up as It got towards the end.

I would love to have an MP3!

I believe it was David Diamond, who sometimes posts as Tone-Deaf Dave, who sang "Haul Away for Rosie-o." His version of that is on The Boarding Party's 3rd CD, "Too Far From the Shore" (Folk-Legacy Cd-131).

Theresa-

I hear you loud and clear! ;~)

Send me a PM with your e-mail address.

I'm not sure if there is an issue with collaborative efforts, if the other major singers need to sign off before I release an MP3. I doubt if the folks in this case would object but I plan to be cautious and request PM or e-mail releases (if you have my e-mail address) before I send out a collaborative MP3. (No, you sea lawyers, that doesn't mean that the entire chorus has to sign off!)

Charley Noble

No 15    I sang Ilo Man (Ilo being in South America rather than Hilo in Hawaii).

This was collected from William Fender by James Carpenter while he was here in Wales! The arrangement I sang was by Callenig - alias Pat Smith & Mick Tems.

Thanks Charlie, I look forward to the recording

Regards Carole

Number 16 (Heave away boys, heave away) was by me myself (Andrew McKay). It's based on a shanty in one of Stan Hugill's books, though it's been "bent" and Swansified in the passage of time, in true shantyman fashion. One verse mentions Brynhyfryd, a part of Swansea near the docks. You can see what Carole means about Welsh spelling!

It was a fine rendition of a "forebitter" and one of my favorites but we were encouraging work songs with choruses, the shanties. not the whole shanty sing which I'm unsure that I'm authorized to do.

Ken-

Who is "Gusto"?

Only 4 shanties outstanding on the deck:

7. "Santeano"
11. "John Kanaka"
12. "Heave Away Me Johnnies/We're All Bound to Go"
18. "Blood-Red Roses"

That's not bad considering how confusing such a large workshop can be.

Thank you, SussexCarole, about your rendition of Ilo Man. It was noted by the American James Madison Carpenter from William Fender, of 16, Sydenham Street, Barry, South Wales, later given the name of Coronation Street. In 1928, Carpenter journeyed to Barry and Cardiff where he recorded 50 shanties and sea songs off six sailors, the most prolific being Fender with 22 songs. Carpenter was always strapped for cash, so he invented this money-saving system - He had a primitive disc recording machine, so he would record the source, make a careful note of it, and "scratch" the disc so it could be used again. It's a minor miracle that so many of the South Wales shanties survived as sound recordings. Look up Rees Baldwin, a sailor who was Carpenter's main contact(and Mayor of Barry) - I've written a stage play about him.

Calennig always meant that Trade Winds would be one of a series, but then I had my stroke. so it put paid to that. Ilo Man goes:

There's a ship in full sail, and it's out upon river,
Way-hay, you Ilo Man!
There's a ship in full sail, and it's out upon the river,
Way-ay you Ilo man!

Some have linked it to an American shanty called Huckleberry Hunting - that's it... I'm too tired to go on!

I've written a preliminary PM to Charley about my understanding of the fine points of distributing people's Getaway recordings but am also checking it out with various FSGW people just to be sure.

The quick general answer, which is only my opinion at this point, is that if anyone wants to distribute (free, or at cost, or to benefit Mudcat and/or FSGW) any recordings made at the FSGW Getaway, you just need to have the singer's documented permission; a PM or e-mail should do. As a courtesy it may be a good idea to let them hear an MP3 of the recording before asking them to OK it!

If I hear any differently, I'll let everyone know what I learn.

Rita

Confirm what Noreen says Charlie, number 9 Alabama was me and you are welcome to use the recording in any way you choose. Thanks for a good session and indeed a good "Getaway". If you ever fancy trying one of our British Shanty Festivals you will always be welcome to stay with Nor and me.

Dr. price-

Thanks for the extra notes on SussexCarole's rendition of "Ilo Man." It's an unusual song and quite lovely. I suspect that "Huckleberry Hunting" which shares the melody and a verse or two was a newer "parody" that the Maine sailors from the Cranberry Isles put together for their own amusement.

Ferrara-

I proceed with caution, knowing full well that someone may have misgivings about releasing a recording of what was led. That's fine with me. Just speak up or PM me!

Stuart-

My wife and I will be wandering around the UK next fall and we will certainly ask you about likely sessions to sing at. We'll do Sharp's in London for sure, Bristol, and then work our way up the coast of Wales. But you need to register as a Mudcat member so we can keep track of you.

Charley Noble

got a message:   Barry Schlesinger says he "was the one who did "Blood Red Roses", or rather lined it out, as once it got
started, everybody else was singing loud enough on the
refrain that I didn't have too. I asked Ken Schatz,
since I had just walked in, if it had been done, and
he said it had not and invited me to."
