Come and get Folked!
Those who enjoy The Woodford Folk Festival Experience and have a yen for some Folk Music at other times of the year, will be excited to discover that they can partake in the beautiful nearby Sunshine Coast Hinterland town of Maleny.

"A Bit Of FOLK On The Side" (known as ABOFOTS!!) is a monthly gathering of singers, musicians, poets, and storytellers, who come to share their love of both contemporary and traditional Folk (including the wide-ranging fields of World, Folk-Blues, Gospel, Country-Folk, and Bluegrass music - and, Spoken Word).
Performance with "Melody and Meaning, Harmony and Heart - and FUN!" is our credo!!

ABOFOTS is hosted by Paul Lawler, former Sydney & Darwin Singer/Songwriter and a twelve-year resident of Maleny. "Our Folk Night started in October 2001, to trial interest and to fill what we considered was a gap in the range of entertainment available. We have not looked back!" said Paul. "Performers and audience regularly come from Brisbane as well as the SunCoast vicinities and we have had a number of visiting interstate (and even some international) artists too. It's a great night!"

The venue for this Folk Feast is the magical Upfront Club in Maleny's main street. The Club is a licensed café, famous for its great coffee and espresso dandelion. Open 7 days a week and 3 nights, it features live, plugged, music on those three nights. It is also unique in being a non-profit Co-Operative, owned and run by its members. For the acoustic ABOFOTS evening (and mostly blackboard-style performance), held on the 1st Saturday of each month, there is a $2 cover charge and light meals are available. During the Winter months, mulled wine and fires are added attractions to entice you up into the mountains!!

If Folk is your fancy, make that trip up the range to Maleny and enjoy the acoustic experience. 7 pm for a 7.30pm start on the 1st Saturday of the month. If you'd like to participate as a performer, just see Paul (the beard) Lawler upon arrival, and :

(complete with some photos of our recent 4th birthday celebrations!)

See you there!

Cheers! R-J

A truly wonderful venue, where the cream of SE Queensland's folkies gather ... and the guest MCs are bloody good, too!

yes, ABOFOTS is a wonderful night and lots of fun, it has been described as "the friendliest folk club you could hope to find", or words to that effect!! The 4th birthday night last month was great. Check it out at the website on Rich-Joy's post. Cheers, Alex

Oh no! I can feel a copyright dispute starting! Are there specialist folk music lawyers?

I have just been to a Folk Fest, and I didn't get any. Unless you count the extra bit of weight on my side from the junk food and Guinness ...

Hi Tim!
perhaps you can come out to Oz and be our Special Guests next Birthday (our 5th)!!!!!

We started in our local Maleny Community venue - a licensed Co-Operative cafe named "The Up Front Club" - and because "Folk Music" is a bit peripheral nowadays, my partner thought "A Bit of FOLK on the Side" would fit nicely!!!

um ... I'm not sure if I want to enquire how Youse Guyse chose your name!!! ha-ha LOL!
(but Keep on Folking!!!)

Cheers! R-J

This thread is degenerating, Rich-Joy. I wasn't game to speculate about the "bit on the side" name. I'd like overseas acts for your next birthday, though ... and you can send any overflow to the Kookaburra.

Foolstroupe, surely it cornet be necessary tubasically explain (in a fit of euphonia) that I don't play the trumpet.

How we got our name is a closely guarded secret, but more info can be found on www.webfolk.net . Would love to come to Oz sometime, keep us in mind.

Well, we celebrate our 9th Birthday this coming Saturday, October 2nd - and it is to be our Final night.

We're not too sad though, as we've had lotsa fun and met lotsa great people and done lotsa singing - and lotsa silly stuff too!
My partner and I are needing to have more "spare" time to pursue other creative ideas!

However, our place at the Up Front Club in Maleny is being taken up by another regular Folk happening : The First Saturday Folk night.
This will be run by The Goodwills (you Aussies may know them from Macca's "Australia All Over" fame) and it starts November 6th.
HUZZAH!!!

VALE, ABOFOTS - and Long Live FSF

Cheers,
Rich-Joy

I'd love to get there, but Real Life is getting in the way - Maybe I can get to the new event - I've taken up push bike riding for my health, but there's no way I'm riding up those hills...

I'll have to get you guys to tell me about the secret back entrance, I fear that The Goodwills may know me already.... :-P

Hi from Maleny, SE Queensland!
just to let you know that I have some Folk Fotos on my Flickr web pages (an on-going project, of course).

ABOFOTS (A Bit of Folk on the Side) has, for most of its 9 years, been sporadically documented and what I have, is now displayed on there.
(Though Opening Night in October 2001 - plus 2009 and 2010 - are exceedingly light-on for pics, so if you have anything that I could show, I'd be most grateful!!)

flickrsite :    http://www.flickr.com/photos/peculiarhand/sets/
This includes all the 12 x Folk Club in Maleny sets which are divided up as : "Birthday sets (1 to 9)" / "ABOFOTS ... the other nights" / "About ABOFOTS".
Or if you'd prefer, there is the Complete series of 450 pics, in the one set, filed under "ABOFOTS : A Bit of Folk on the Side"

All my Collections so far are here too : Folk Music / Folk Club / Family History / Crochet / QI Miscellanea / and so on ..... and are all very much a "Work in Progress!!

website :    http://www.peculiarhand.com/index-links.html (but - surprise surprise - most pages are in desperate need of updating!!)

N.B.    It's very easy to spend Truckloads of Time on Flickr .... many of the photos are really quite extraordinary.
However, my pages are more concerned with documenting and remembering, rather than displaying evidence of the exquisite art that can be "Photography"!!
:~)

Cheers, R-J

Hi. I have only just come across this site and saw something you posted ages ago. Did you ever have any luck with your request about the Mills Sisters and Waltzing Matilda? I only heard it once, about 12 years ago, and I have tried and tried to get a copy ever since. I have been in touch with every Koori organisation I can think of, as well as the NT tourist centre and all sorts of places but no luck. I thought I had it just lately and I sent away for the cd but it was Ali Mills and nothing like the great version. Do you have any info?
I will keep looking here in case you know where I can get it. Thanks so much.       'Mills fan'

You're in luck, Guest!

I just refreshed two threads regarding this song :

"Walzem Back Matilda", where another request was made for the lyrics, and finally,

"Waltjim Bat Matilda (Folk Process!)"

which contains them!!

Enjoy,
Cheers, R-J

Well, ABOFOTS (A Bit Of Folk On The Side) with Paul & Richenda is now long-gone, and even FSF (First Saturday Folk) with The Goodwills has now transmogrified into FBAB (Folk, Blues and Beyond), with new custodians.

And The Wheel Turns ..... for Paul Lawler (aka Lawls, aka The Human Ge-Gnome) - has now passed over, due to the scourge that is cancer.

Today I posted an OBIT thread on The Cat for him.

Fare-thee-well for now, My Beloved - NAMASTE.
