Subject: Christmas Tune Req: Tom Tomson - Silent Night
From: GUEST,starfishian
Date: 29 Oct 05 - 02:40 PM

I'm looking for an arrangement of Silent Night by Tom Tomson - believe it's a Canadian recording. The optimist in me hopes to find a digital recording (can't fnd much more than a vinyl 45 on line, but I have no turntable).

Can anyone help me with some background on it, or point me to a recording or sheet music or cassette tape ?

Thanks!

Where did you find the vinyl 45? What site? Do you have any other info--and is that the spelling of his name?

I wonder if you mean Tom Jackson, the Canadian Aboriginal actor who is the guiding light and front man of the annual fund-raising Huron Carole concert series.

As far as I can tell, Tom Tomson is exactly how his name is spelled (not to be confused with the painter). I found vinyl recordings on ebay, coolforever.com .

Sorry - that was me sending the last message (GUEST), but my computer stalled while replying. I'm surprised it actually posted.
I don't think it's Tom Jackson, Bob - but a good thought, nonetheless!

My Dutch stinks - I can't tell if he takes requests to play it on the radio station, or if he will send it to you.

The two translation programs I use are less than helpful but are entertaining... their versions provided below just for fun.

Unfortunately my Dutch is very old-fashioned and not at all colloquial (as apparently is the translation program's), however, I suspect Starfishian's first guess is correct, though - not very helpful, eh?

However, if you emailed Erik (in English, as most Netherlanders can speak/read/write it) and explained what you are looking for, he might very well be able to record from his 'plaatjes' and send you a digital version. Worth a try, innit?

For the record (pun intended):

"Zoek je favo plaat uit en mail hem naar Erik van Vliet en vermeld je naam en evt tel nr en op welke cd die staat en waarom je die plaat wilt horen(Klik hier voor veel covers van plaatjes)" is what the site says.

Rendered by Worldlingo as:
"You him to Erik van Vliet and mentions you name and evt tel no. zoek
favo plate from and mail and on which cd that state and why you that
plate wants horen(Klik here for many covers of plaatjes)"

and by Babelfish as: "You him to Erik van Vliet and mentions you name and evt tel no. zoek favo plate from and mail and on which cd that state and why you want that plate horen(Klik here for many covers of plaatjes)Of here for Eriks Platenkelder part 2 here cupboard 3"

Dear me. Sounds illegal!

Now that we've cleared THAT up.

However, there is an excellent suggestion from Judith: e-mail the guy.

I'll drop him a line - I have a few co-workers from the Netherlands, and I was going to ask one of them to translate for me tomorrow! (I had a similarly unhelpful translation from Babelfish, which should be mortified by their Dutch to English non-service!).

Good idea, Judith - maybe he'll send me a file even if he normally only plays it on the radio.

Thanks for your help too, Peace. Wish me luck!

CKWX used to play this song every Christmas back in the 70-80s, it is a solo guitar song, very well done.

Hi,
Did you ever find a copy of Tom Tomson's Silent Night? I am planning on burning it onto a CD. I have the 45 RPM record which was released in 1978 on Redwood Records. I live on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
Let me know,
Lew

I'm the D.J. that worked at CKWX Vancouver for 14 years. Every year I played this song. It was the most requested Christmas tune. Absolutely beautiful version of Silent Night...guitar solo. Amazing!
Would love to find a copy, or be able to download it.
