Subject: Lyr Req: shirley collins' geordie #209 From: Roberto Date: 30 Oct 05 - 01:48 PM Please, help correct and complete this (I miss a line in the second stanza). From Shirley & Dolly Collins, Love, Death & the Lady. Thank you. R As I rode over London Bridge One misty morning early I overheard a tender-hearted girl Plead for the life of Geordie Now Geordie ... He never murdered any He only shot a King's white deer All for to feed his family Then the judge looked over his left shoulder And thus he says to Geordie: By your confession you shall hang And the Lord have mercy upon you Then Geordie he looked around the court And saw his dearest Polly Said he – My love, you've come too late For I am condemned already It's six pretty babes I've born to you And the seventh lies in my body But freely would I part with them To spare the life of Geordie Then Geordie he walked around the court And said farewell to many But the leaving of his own true love That grieved him worst of any Let Geordie hang in golden chains His crimes they were not many He only shot a King's white deer All for to feed his family |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: shirley collins' geordie #209 From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 30 Oct 05 - 02:16 PM Roberto - on the live recording from Within Sounds collection she sings an identical version with the omission of the It's six pretty babes... verse. The missing line from verse 2 is (as far as I can make out) Now Geordie robbed nor stole horses. The rest (barring the missing verse) is as you have it here. Mick |
