Subject: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: Ebbie Date: 30 Oct 05 - 06:14 PM As some of you know, I recorded a great deal of the Getaway. (Unfortunately, only those venues I attended!) The recordings are not perfect but they are very listen-able and serve very well as a souvenir. Or for learning new songs, which is my own priority. There are many distinctive songs and beautiful voices. Many, many thanks to all of you. On a separate thread I'm going to post indexes of songs for which I need the name(s) of the major song leaders on individual songs. I'm hoping that others who recorded will post theirs also. Maybe we'll start a new thing. I WILL be posting both the Saturday Night and the Sunday Night concerts, even though I already have the participants' names, from Charlie Baums's list, because I want to post each song title. To the best of my ability- in many cases I couldn't be sure what the title was and went instead with the recurring theme or repeated line. I hope people will make corrections so I can get the proper name on each. (I'm not posting the mini concerts, because the singer is a given. They however will be part of the eventual CDs.) I'm at the stage now where I need permission to include individual songs on the CDs. After the names are named and I have the corrections made and after anybody who does not wish to be included has let me know, I will take the minidiscs to a tech shop and have them burnt onto CDs. After that is done, I will make a copy for anyone who wishes one. The only cost to you will be postage- handling is part of MY fun! As I said, the recordings are not perfect. I held the microphone above one raised arm and every time I switched hands because of fatigue, the mic picked up the 'wind' of movement. NEXT year I will have a lightweight, thin mic stand that will be a lot more stable. (I can hardly wait!) Eb |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: GUEST,KT Date: 30 Oct 05 - 10:52 PM Yeah, Bobert, a person could write a song about gettin' fired from a blues band....they sure could. It'd be a very sad song indeed. Kinda like singing the blues....ah, I get it, that was your intent all along, you sly dog you!!! KT |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: nutty Date: 31 Oct 05 - 06:42 AM Can I suggest that you talk of "giving a donation" rather than "paying". The latter may raise copyright issues. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: Allan C. Date: 31 Oct 05 - 06:43 AM Ebbie, you can certainly use anything of mine that you may have recorded. I, too, am wanting a copy. (Wow! This is really adding up, isn't it!) I know that any of the folks who hear it will be grateful for the diligence with which you recorded so much of such a great event. Thanks! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: jimmyt Date: 31 Oct 05 - 06:47 AM Ebbie I would be delighted to purchase a copy and certainly have no problems with permission! KT. I will begin writing the Unfit for the Blues BLues, the Story of one ALaskan woman who tried and failed to make the cut into the pedestrians...God, it makes me weep just thinking about it! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: Bat Goddess Date: 31 Oct 05 - 07:18 AM I don't know if you caught me singing at all, but if you did, you definitely have permission for the recording. Please, please, please, I'd love a copy, too -- will pay cost, make donation, whatever. I record a lot of the sessions I'm involved in around this neck of the woods -- singarounds, parties, etc. -- and know full well the quality is nowhere near commercial -- but for song learning or just encapsulating a weekend of memories, wow! what a wonderful thing! Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: Ebbie Date: 31 Oct 05 - 11:58 AM Oh, Amos, you captured her feelings exactly. She mopes daily. Haveing a vent for her feelings should help. I love the response to the recordings and I'll list everybody who wants a copy. Keep in mind that they're not ready yet. I'm going through this process first - and I still have one Index thread to post. This one will be called something like 'Third of Three' so it doesn't get too confusing. After that - and so far I haven't gotten one demand not to be included! - is when I'll take the minidiscs to be put onto CDs. After that, I'll buy some mailers and we're on our way. I'll PM each one for a mailing address, but not yet. As I said, the only cost to anyone who wants a copy will be postage, probably rounded off to a simple figure. I appreciate your offer to 'pay' or make a donation but it ain't needed, folks. Maybe next year, other people will record the workshops they attended- since the Cloning Department didn't fulfill their contract this year, there's a lot that I missed. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: MMario Date: 31 Oct 05 - 12:02 PM Ebbie - "not nececessary" maybe - but I think a contribution to the FSGW Scholarship fund and/or the Mudcat would certainly be appropriate. I will certainly do so. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: GUEST,Anonymous Guest Date: 31 Oct 05 - 02:17 PM you most definately do not have my permission to reproduce anything I performed, had I performed anything. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: Maryrrf Date: 31 Oct 05 - 07:27 PM You have my permission to include anything I performed and I would want a copy. I like the suggestion of setting up a FSGW/Mudcat fund of some sort and would be willing to pay, donate, contribute or whatever we want to call it. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: Fortunato Date: 31 Oct 05 - 08:52 PM Ebbie, If you've recorded us please feel free to handle it in any way you see fit. love chance |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: KT Date: 01 Nov 05 - 12:02 AM Shown up? Not in any departments at all, that I know of, Janie, gospel singer extraordinaire!!!!! As for mopping, Dani, definitely not daily!! There's just too much music to be made!!!! KT |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: Ferrara Date: 01 Nov 05 - 12:13 AM I posted this in the 3rd and final setlist thread, but I think it belongs here. Ron Davies named the authors of several songs he sang at the Getaway, then said, "I definitely have no objection to being recorded, but I have no idea of copyright considerations." That started me thinking about something Bill pointed out, namely that there's a difference between distributing modern songs and trad songs. Here's what I wrote: "Ron, copyright is a question I have started wondering about.... If a CD full of recordings is all Trad, or stuff written by the singer (who has already given permission) the question doesn't come up. If it's by other authors, though ... Some would be fine with it if no money changes hands (except actual costs), others might well not! In a way, if there's a great song by a songwriter who wasn't at the Getaway, and it's not a song that's commonly heard, I think it's nicer, to say the least, to learn the song from buying the author's CD rather than by recording someone's version of it. In fact that's what I did, for one of my "I-must-learn-that" songs from the Getaway. (For another one, I asked the author and he said it's published on Mudcat.) Just something to consider. It's hard enough, logistically, just getting permissions from the singers. It's harder to figure out which songs were written by whom and/or are still under copyright. But maybe we should at least try? (I don't want to make even more work and complications for Ebbie but do feel we should do our best to keep this both legal and fair)" Any thoughts? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: Ebbie Date: 01 Nov 05 - 12:29 AM Ah, but moping- KT is going to have to learn how to do that properly. (What is a proper mope, BTW?) Kath Westra, sorry to say I didn't get to the Schneyer concert. There are so many things I missed. I lay it at the door of the Cloning Department- I never had any indication that they had any success in their efforts. I suggest we withhold the money they were promised. (Notice I refer to 'them', so that no individual will feel too bad about it.) IMPORTANT NOTE: This is as good a time and place as any to post some disclaimers. I have mentioned that I missed a great many workshops and mini concerts- the only things that I reliably heard as well as anyone else are the two major concerts. The rest- well, I'm just glad I got to as many things as I did. Maybe next year some other people will also record. My own recording quality next year should be better- I plan to acquire a tall, thin microphone stand, so as to eliminate the 'wind howl' in the mic whenever I exchanged arms. (Speaking of 'tall and thin', Bobert and his hat did a good job of being a mic stand but I kept losing him.) The other disclaimer I have to admit is that in listening - and listening and listening - to the discs, is that in addition to erasing the down time and the talk and prolonged applause, I had to erase a number of cuts. Some were too far away to be properly audible, in some the surroundings were just a bit too enthusiastic and some I 'lost' inadvertently in the learning process. This is what happened when you notice there is a song missing that you know you performed in a workshop or mini concert. I remember one time I lost a song I dearly wanted to keep - and in erasing a bit of extraneous talk- I lost it. Swearing and stomping around doesn't bring it back, I found. Reminds me of what a boss of mine said of me once (I was VERY young.*G*) He said, somewhere between ruefulness and admiration: 'Ebbie' never makes the same mistake twice. But she makes every one of them.') In spite of all these blips and glitches on these recordings, however, there is a lot of good stuff there. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2005 Permissions Request From: Charlie Baum Date: 01 Nov 05 - 12:54 AM Permission is granted for anything I sang at the Getaway, and any of my introductions, emceeing, explanations, and explications which may have been captured on recording to be reproduced. If anyone taped me leading "Fountain FIlled With Blood" at the Helen Schneyer workshop--that's the one thing I'd like to hear myself to see if the recording captured anything like what I was perceiving. --Charlie Baum |
