I'm wondering if anyone knows the guitar chords to "The Water Is Wide". I'm mainly looking for the versions Carolyn Hester and other popular folksingers used to sing in the 60's. The Kingston Trio did a version called "The River Is Wide". I'd be interested in theirs too.

Is the way I do it , though its a LONG time since I listened to any recordings ! Hope this is a help !

Version I sing has the following chords but I have heard several variations

  
  D                 G6            D
  The Water is wide I can't cross over
  D           Bm     G6       A7
  And neither have I wings to fly
            F#m                  Bm Bm/A G
  Give me a boat that will carry two
                 D/F# A7          D
  And both shall row  my love and I

There are two different ways of singing the second line.

"wings" can be sung as a B note or a C note (assuming you are singing in the key of G ). If you sing a C (preferable imo) then you play an Am chord. If you sing a B, you stay on the Em until the change to D on "fly"
