Opening the winter season we have the John Arbon
band appearing on Monday 21st. November at 8.pm.
They are a four piece group based in Gainsbro. consisting of,
                                    
            John on Melodean, concertina and harmonica,

            His sister, Julia on Melodean,
      
            Colin Greaves on Irish Pipes and Whistle,

            Steve Hindley Guitar and vocals and maybe accordian.

They are folk band specialising in British, and beyond
traditional music and songs.   
They tell me there will be a selection of Jigs,Reels,Hornpipes
and Polkas amongst their varied programme
£2.00 on the door, including a special treat for mudcatters
who read this. Daren't say any more than this for fear of reprisals.
There will be limited time for floor singers

JK & EE - A Permathread is one that is controlled by an individual, and can be edited (e.g. all the old crap cleared out to keep it a sensible length). When it starts to get a bit OTT, you can remove the old stuff and revive the reduced or empty thread so you only carry current stuff in there (also if some prat puts abusive or other improper posts on it, you can get rid of them).

Take a look at the Gainsborough FC Permathread which Sooz moderates - it's a good example.

I believe you need to talk to Joe Offer to get one set up.

   longer threads. I thought the idea was to keep it going.

   I have difficulty at times getting on to mudcat and have
   had to give up. It freezes on discussion forum and Ep,th folk
   so I can't get on when I want to.

Ep'th Folk was again beset by misfortune on Monday when 8 of it's loyal supporters rang in to say they could'nt be
there for very good reasons.A phone call is always very helpful and appreciated.

Despite this about 20 got the meeting off to a great start with a number of notable local singers amongst the gathering crowd. The charge
of £1.00 on the door was quickly forgotten when the crowd found who
was taking it from them. Who else but your lovely Jane or JK to mudcatters.The sing around format seemed to prove popular and we
made 3 circuits of the room by the end of the night.

The standard of singing and playing was very high and
the music offered varied from traditional songs up to the swinging
60s. With a good crowd, chorus songs were sung lustily as in the
early days of Ep'th folk .

Song of the evening for me was the version of Archie Fishers
song Jock of Hazeldine sung by Dave, lead singer of Tin Bath
accompanied so effortlessly, or so it seemed by Christina on fiddle.

Next meeting is on Monday 21st. November at 8pm.

Ep'th Folk last night I forgot to announce that the next
meeting will feature the John Arbon band. They are a local

Yes you've got the right one, we've acquired am automatic car - it automatically takes me out at night!! Plus I've had my knee 'done' and graduallly seems to be improving so I'm hoping to get over to Epworth regularly now.

At the last meeting I'd arranged to meet up with some friends from Newcastle for the evening for a sing!

Yes the weather forcast is bad but I'm setting off at 7 and will come back 'early' if necessary.

Yes Carol, I live in Epworth along with 2 or 3 other hardy frequenters of Ep'th folk. A few come from nearby villages and the
rest have to travel from Doncaster, Scunthorpe and Gainsbro. etc.
A fact that I don't overlook and appreciate. But more of that later.

Are you the Carol that came from,"I won't say the name",          near Goole.?

Get to the traffic lights in Epworth. I don't know where you are coming from so that's the best starting point I can give you.
Head off away from town, down Station Road with the WHITE BEAR pub
car park on your Right. Proceed for a few hundred yards down this
road and you'll find BATTLE GREEN, which is a fork to the left.
Go down there and you'll see the OLD SCHOOL on your right.

Incidentally Kathryn Tikels father was headmaster here when it was a school. She lived and spent her childhood years here.

Good timekeeping is essential, and if organised properly there's still time for some chat. And good timekeeping helps those who travel a distance. Those clubs that habitually start late and unpredictably and/or have protracted breaks have lost my support over time, although I always give a club several chances first!!

I'd love to come over to Epworth tomorrow, but..
(a) there's fierce competition from Mike Nicholson at Barnsley,
and (b) the weather forecast is dreadful (which makes a difference to a long drive).

But just for future reference, how does one find the Old School Inn? Which street is it on?

Distance is relative, where do you draw the line as to how far people travel??
I don't know but there's probably only Eric lives in Epworth that goes to the club, so perhaps everyone should have a 20 min spot, it would be a long night!!

The regulars at Epworth are always singing new songs, so it shouldn't become stale - I think numbers is the problem so perhaps the other week's meeing did some good.

Encouraging people to come to a club is a good thing, and if they travel some distance to do it like say WLDrummer then maybe they cannot do that journey too often, to appreciate their making the effort to support a club a considerable distance away a 20 min spot seems a good idea to me. After all a club can hear it's own members every other week and the songs can become stale. But thats just my opinion.

Epworth, Gainsborough and Market Rasen are three clubs in the region really trying to support each other...Epworth and Gainsb. offering the singaround format, with additional/or concert nights periodically and then Market Rasen where Les' policy on 25 minute assigned floor spots before the guest artist is the norm...I guess we're pretty lucky in that we are catered for all round really..(many thanks to those club organisers for all they do!! ie/...Gainsborough Festival was brilliant recently!)

Agreed completely if Epworth is a singers club, which it is then everyone should have the same number of chances to perform - most people travel some distance to it anyhow. i was getting a bit annoyed hearing about people wanting to book 20 min spots, if anyone should get them it should be the regulars who support the club every other week not the 'rare' performers.

I also think if peole don't turn up until late in the evening they shouldn't be 'given' the same number of songs as someone who has been there all evening, although in a singaround venue this shouldn't happen anyway.

I guess one god thing about strict timekeeping;ie...8-11pm means that even artists travelling are assured 4+ songs; and then I guess on the measure of that, Eric could choose to spotlight an artist for more time at a future date??!...I have to agree with one of the 'regulars' comments...along the lines of 'fair play should be given to all who attend, and not the more 'rare' artists turning up'...I really think the answer lies in getting there on time; if there has to be a break..then a very short one, and then keep the music going....there is nothing worse than tardy starts and even longer chatty breaks...having said all of that, it's nice to socialise..speaking for my 'audience only' hubby, he doesn't like protracted starts and breaks!!! (Only wish that spread to his DIY/and other domestic areas!!)

how I agree, totally boring internal monologue, now in the 60's we used to dicuss the meaning of life, the essence of being as it were, the existential nature of existence itself, freedom as a leitmotif in European culture....used to piss ourselves over that last one!

you don't get that in folk clubs nowadays, just a few songs and pie and peas in the interval if you're lucky. It's crap really.
