I'm hoping to start a proper folk club here in BC, Shropshire. Few floor singers and local artists (if we can collect enough money!)We have a lot of really good performers in this neck of the woods and we don't have a platform for them.

Don't know what night of the month yet,or where, but am open to ideas.

Now THAT sounds like a good idea. Six Bells or Three Tuns? Perhaps both? The Tuns has the big room.... Put me down for a spot! Weekends preferably, since I'm 90 miles away!

And while I'm here, did you know that the Mersey River and Shanty festivals, which normally clash with your fine do in June, will not be happening next year? Apparently (I have this from Clive who got it direct from Jack Coutts) they're redeveloping the Albert Dock area (again??!!!!) in preparation for 2008.
So we can (a) have more people in BC and (b) run our own Mersey Shanty Festival. Perhaps someone should dig the Mersey and Shropshire Canal?

Steve

Hi Sal
Nice to see you and Schantieman on Saturday at the WWII Home Front Day. Surprising how many folkies were there.

A new session sounds great.

Not a Thursday as Im at the Boat Inn for the Irish session every week.

Even tho im in Shropshire its still over an hour from Telford to BCastle. So a Friday may be better for me once a month.

I havnt been to the Ludlow session in ages as have been busy, but thats 3rd friday of the month.

cheers
fliss

Nothing wrong with mikes and monitors in the right place, and that can be in the folk world as in any other. Any other restrictions, no no's, or prejudices we should know about?

I'm looking forward to it - no smoky atmosphere to irritate eyes & lungs and make clothes smell. No electronics to deafen me and mask all the singers' imperfections. Good beer and good singing in a great pub and lovely little town

If our anonymous guest would like to look elsewhere I daresay he/she'd find what he/she wants. Chacun a son goût, I say.

Can we also ban beer as well. Think of all the violence and road traffic accidents it causes. Not to mention the cost to the country in medical expenditure.

Dear Guest, You are quite right, there's nothing wrong with mikes and monitors; I used a monitor myself with the band until we discovered the Boze Tower. I just feel that setting up and getting down is a pain and time wasting at this folk club. I want to go back to traditional roots and have more singing and positive feedback.(and bangs and squeels of the pleasant variety)

Are you a boring/sad person? Somehow I doubt it. Do you really want to ban beer? Three Tuns Beer? Obviously YOU haven't been to Bishop's Castle and tasted the delights of the 2 breweries we have here. If you are in favour of smoking, what about all the money that's being spent mending the self inflicted cancers and infecting others with your antisocial habit. Thank God it's a free country and YOU don't have to come!

Sounds interesting and a good excuse see you, Steve & Bishop's Castle again and, indeed, sample the tasty Three Tuns ales! Non smoking and accoustic sounds just perfect. I would be pleased to do a floor spot.
Sandy & I are currently free on 24 Feb. What sort of accommodation do you have got in mind?

Alan: the kick off is 24th March because the pub is having some building work done. The room isn't in use till then. Just about to sign the contract with 'the famous artist' then I can tell you who it is.

Accommodation? I have some space in my little house and there is a bed and breakfast or two in town. I'm sure we can arrange lots of floors for those who want to stay over. Should be fun. 8)

Ahem - there is nothing wrong with mikes and monitors?

No - its the people who use them that are the problem. Volume is everything and sometime all there is. Then there is the ballance which is affected by alcohol I find - then there is the microphone technique.

AND THEN THERE ARE THE PUNTERS WHO DON'T LIKE LOUD NOISES.

It's a bit like folk singing really - some does it well, some does it soso and mostly there are those who do what they do.

Personally I go to FOLK session to get away from the flickaswitch society.

Mr Red CEng MIEE

Oh Sal - don't forget to tell the listmeisters (web and paper and radio) about your venture - free publicity is worth a lot more than you pay for it.

Being quite ancient, and having discovered folk clubs when quite young, I can remember when JK was running Dingle's Folk Club in London. If I can escape the day job to get to BC in March, I hope to be there! Good luck anyway.

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but thought that you might be interested to know that New Scorpion Band have a couple of Shropshire rural gigs coming up, just before Christmas - they are:

Wednesday 21st December        Chetton Village Hall, Bridgnorth 7.30pm, Tel. 01746 789208 / 789257

Thursday 22nd December        Chapel Lawn Village Hall, Bucknell 7.30pm, Tel. 01547 530504

They will be doing a fabulous programme of midwinter and Christmas music from the last 500 years, interspersed with some brilliantly evocative seasonal readings - to make you laugh and, perhaps, cry! And they perform completely acoustically, with a full range of brass, woodwind, strings, free reed and percussion instruments (and voices).

This is a little article I'm putting in the local Newspapers...

Bishop's Castle Folk Club

Friday 24th March sees the start of the first Bishop's Castle Folk Club. This is to take place in the Top Room at The Three Tuns Public House at 8 o'clock prompt. Opening the club is the resident band
The Shot Dogs, followed by floor spots from various performers.

Our very special guest for the opening night of the Club is Mr. John Kirkpatrick. John lives locally and is not only involved with the local Morris side, The Shropshire Bedlams, but is also one of the major figures of the English folk scene. "I was so pleased when he agreed to perform at our first night. It's a great honour," said Sally, the organiser. "He has a wonderful voice and his melodeon and concertina playing can't be praised highly enough." With John we're guaranteed an evening of variety and entertainment of the highest quality.

This is an unplugged, non-smoking club, and an affordable evening of song, music, stories and laughter. "We'll be featuring young folk artists from Shropshire and beyond" Sally carried on " I've seen them at local pub sessions, and been very impressed. I know they're out there, but don't have a stage on which to prove it. We'll have Show Case evenings as well as singers' nights and special guests."

Bishop's Castle Folk Club nights are March 24th, April 21st (both at The Three Tuns) and May 19th (venue tbc)
all at 8 o'clock prompt. Entrance £5.00 on guest nights and an annual membership ticket will be available.

Please come and join the Club. Make friends, sing along, tap you feet and have a laugh. If you would like a floor spot please contact Sally on 01588 638438

WOW THANKS TIM!
It was good fun wasn't it? We 'old' folkies must look out for Scott Hale (17, I've known him since he was 12) Ceri Davies (15, Bendigo Davies' daughter) and Sam Cope (14, Ray Cope's grand son)they were really good, hmmmph! Steve's (Schantieman)voice rang to the rafters, Bit on the Side made us laugh, think and sing. Chris 'Yorkie' Bartram seronaded us and Sally and the Shot Dogs.... can't say anything can I? We were wonderful! I must thank my kids Joe, Lucie (publicity manager) and Charlie (selling raffle tickets) for the lovely birthday cake. And I mustn't forget Marianne on the door. She's one of my best mates and has a head for numbers, wot I don't.

I can lay 500 bricks and I can lay 500 girls and I can lay 500 eggs and I can mark 500 books and I can spend 500 pounds....you had to be there!

The next one is indeed Friday April 21st at The 3 Tuns public house. And again one of the raffle prizes will be a flagon of 3 Tuns Ale. It's a floor spot night so if you want to come along it'd be good to see you. I'm sure we can find a floor for you to sleep on afterwards.

I've moved house and moved on, sorry. The locals weren't interested so neither am I. My energies will be in helping Arthur (fellow Shot Dog) organise village hall entertainment evenings. "Little Box of Delights" I'm hoping to see James Raynard here in Herefordshire, and some stunning local artistes to support him. Will let you know when the time comes.
