Subject: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: MuddleC Date: 03 Nov 05 - 05:49 AM Hello, this is a general shout to all those people who attented the study break in Bridstowe Devon last week.(24-28 Oct 2005) Have you used the 'folk process' on anything yet? Rhis weekend Fiona forced me to enjoy myself at the 'After the Fair' mini-fest in Bampton. I sang the new 'trad-arranged' version of Black Dog, and Fi stood up and sang her first 'official' song!! Matt was around there too, fiddling about. And thanks to the person who reversed into my Pontiac on Sunday night, by the way the piece of paper you left under my wiper had my licence plate number on ... not yours! Those sessions after the hard days work were mighty enjoyable. Tim (day release from Dartmoor) |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: AlexB Date: 03 Nov 05 - 03:53 PM Hey Tim. Fiona 'forced' you, huh? Sounds like the two of you had fun. That Matt and his fiddling.... Myself, I ended up with a cold, which I blame Chloe for... might have been my fault for hugging her lots though. I haven't really had a chance to do much because of it. I did go through Martin's Folk Resources thing for him to update (obviously reminding him to add Mudcat). I think the week wasn't long enough. I'm back in my usual situation that doesn't allow me anywhere near the freedom I got last week (pity me dammit!!!). Had the week lasted longer, I might have been able to break through my confidence issues a bit better.. Have you done anything for Kate's "Sabine Harvester" challenge? Madeline. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: MuddleC Date: 03 Nov 05 - 04:28 PM Well, I thought I'd better not hug Chloe, or there may be a new way of playing the digeredoo. Remember, lock yourself in a cupboard before you practice!! As for Kate's challenge, I'm trying to remember the first verse.. Cos I'm a brand new sabine harvester, and ...??? I found an old broadside what was lining a drawer, I found that the music was inexplicably missin' I wonder what be the key Be it A, D, or C? Oh pigging hell it's mixolydian with augmented G |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: Cats at Work Date: 04 Nov 05 - 08:45 AM Glad you all enjoyed yourselves. We were at the B G weekend and it was brilliant. Having been involved in every single one since it started, the move into Okehampton was rnecessary and right. I couldn't get to the study break, even to the dip in bits as we had people staying and missed popping out to the evening sessions. See you next year. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: AlexB Date: 04 Nov 05 - 09:00 AM Cats, why didn't you drag them along. They were good sessions, I'm sure they would have enjoyed them. Tim... I think I'll stick to my dad's office.... its small enough I can pretend it is a cupboard... hey, maybe that is why cupboards work so well... |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: MuddleC Date: 04 Nov 05 - 01:58 PM come on Maddy, where's your verse? (and thanks for the endorsement!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: AlexB Date: 04 Nov 05 - 02:50 PM verse verse verse... um.... off the top of my head and rubbish.. I might do another one later I browsed the archives just to find me a verse For good old Sabine he had changed all the words But I couldn't read What's on the micro-fiche Can't read his writing so must ask Martin Graebe |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: CallyH Date: 04 Nov 05 - 04:37 PM Sounds like you all had a great week, what was it all about? What were the workshops? And what on earth is the 'folk process'? |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: MuddleC Date: 05 Nov 05 - 10:24 AM The 'folk process', so surgically used by the Rev S.B-G, is akin to spilling a can of paint remover on the portrait of the mona lisa, and replacing it with a picasso! The workshops were individually tailored, although there were group thingies too. Everyone made mistakes here and there of course, press wrong button, sing wrong key, forgetlyrics/ tune, forget the rest of the vacuum cleaner Anyway, to prove we had learned something from the experience, everyone had to do a new 'party-piece' in front of the group final thing Friday. I can tell you more if you wish. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: MuddleC Date: 06 Nov 05 - 01:18 PM c'mon, where's the rest o'ye? Did you know that at the 'after-the-fair' event in the White Horse, the ingress of dartmoor ants was so bad that an irish specialist had to get up on the table to kill them...! The local 'ant-killing dance' was also augmented by black-faced northern folk in't clogs and guys with double-handled swords!! Matt hand demonstrated the killing technique on an up-turned breakfast tray earlier on during the study week. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: AlexB Date: 06 Nov 05 - 01:44 PM Matt tried teaching me the technique, but I forgot half of it. Does that mean I can only kill half the number of ants? |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: MuddleC Date: 07 Nov 05 - 02:20 PM -that and the ants will eat your breakfast! |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: AlexB Date: 07 Nov 05 - 06:42 PM Good, they can have it. Far too much brekkie for my liking. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: MuddleC Date: 07 Nov 05 - 08:02 PM I sanged 'my new song' on sunday night and got compliments... and some other chaps want to get together for a singing with instruments thingy!!! Have you found that 'voice' again yet maddy? |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: AlexB Date: 08 Nov 05 - 07:48 AM Yay for you!!! Yes I have, briefly..though I wonder if that was more to do with the cold than anything else. I got an email from Matt telling me to keep singing because I had a lovely voice. My mum said "no you don't, it is croaky and horrible". I does love my mum.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: MuddleC Date: 08 Nov 05 - 08:46 AM find that cupboard, lock yourself in.... and.... 'They say old man your horse will die........... and they say so, and we hope so.......' your voice will 'ring' once you relax |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: Cats at Work Date: 09 Nov 05 - 05:04 AM Keep singing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: MuddleC Date: 19 Nov 05 - 08:36 PM went to my local library to inquire about getting set of SBG microfiches...... 'sorry, minority interest'.... I thought minorities got preference in this country....!! -I shall regroup, and try a different tack.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: AlexB Date: 20 Nov 05 - 02:54 PM hmm... thanks for reminding me about that.... should ask my library, though I'll probably get the same response. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: MuddleC Date: 20 Nov 05 - 07:44 PM it's the way she just dismissed the idea out of hand, so I asked if they bothered buying any reference books anymore... no comprehension.. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sabine Baring-Gould Study Break From: AlexB Date: 21 Nov 05 - 10:47 AM Was it the head bod? If not, take it up with the higher ups!!!! Try to make a case out of it... resources there for keeping alive traditions and all that... make it sound important. |
