Goodbye, Gene Debs, I know just where you'll be:

Well, Gene you tried to change them, but they beat you in the end,
Still I'm glad we had you for a friend.

"Goodbye Joe Hill" by Utah Phillips

ALSO:
Art Garfunkel was born 11/5/1941. (Paul Simon wasn't).
11/5 2005: First Saturday of Nov: Sadie Hawkins Day (in some places the 1st Sat after 11/11 – that's 11/11 for the UK)

My Daddy's Daddy, one-time county attorney for Travis County (here in Texas), John Henry Faulk I (Dad was JHFjr; his youngest is JHF Roman Numeral Three--the way he announced it in the very funny letter about the birth back in 1968 or '69?) was always very proud to call himself a Debs Socialist.
There's a great song--the JOHN MacLEAN MARCH--that Ed Miller(a Scot) does that could make you take on injustice and oppression with fire in your eye. Did anyone ever do a song explaining Debs' philosophy/policies/efforts to bring health and sanity to his world?      Tw

"While there is a lower class, I am of it,
While there is a criminal class, I am in it,
While there is a soul in prison I am not free!"

I have a message for him. In the '70s I was a member of a commune in Virginia, and for some years I helped run the office & answer mail. We used to get occasional letters from prisoners who hoped we could help them go straight when they got out, and one of them was in the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana, where Debs was born. I quoted the above in my reply, ironically, and said I hadn't known they'd built a prison there. The prisoner replied, "You can tell Gene Debs that this prison was built in 1935" (or whenever -- too late for Debs to have heard about it, anyway).
