Trotsky? Along with Lenin had his arms up to the elbows in blood. Mind you, only amatuers comapred with Stalin, his were soaked to the shoulders.
Compared to the Communists the Nazi's were mere beginners in massed murder.

So people say; but the tool pictured in http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4103306.stm and miscalled by that name is in fact an ice ax (a device whose purposes include cutting steps on glaciers and arresting slides on ice & snow), not an ice pick (a awl-like device whose purpose was cutting chips off the big blocks of ice that used to be delivered in the days before refrigeration).

Thanks All. File amended. Ency Brit entry follows. It (though oddly) agrees with Joe.

Trotsky was the object of two assassination attempts, presumably by Stalinist agents. The first, a machine gun attack on his house, failed. The second, by Ramón Mercader, a Spanish Communist who had won the confidence of the Trotsky household, was successful. The Soviet government disclaimed any responsibility, and the ax murderer was sentenced to the maximum 20-year term under Mexican law.
