Subject: Obit: Derek Lamb has died

Derek Lamb died this past Friday at the age of 68 following a long battle with cancer. Although he was best known as an Academy Award winning filmmaker who worked for many years in Montreal at the National Film Board –- he won the best animated short film Oscar in 1979 for "Every Child" -– he was also an engaging folksinger who performed on several occasions at the Golem, the folk club that I ran in the 1970s and '80s.

Tomorrow (November 10) morning's edition of Folk Roots/Folk Branches will include an extended tribute to Derek and will include songs from his Folkways album recorded in the early-1960s as well as material from a new and as-of-yet unreleased CD that he finished this year. The tribute will begin at about 9:06 a.m. just after the show's opening.

CKUT's live stream, the archived streams and the downloadable 'podcasts' for editions of Folk Roots/Folk Branches from the past two months, can be heard or accessed from the Folk Roots/Folk Branches Listen page.

Oh wow. I had met Derek briefly when I first moved to New England and he and Tracie were living in Cambridge. He was a wonderful singer and had an excllent way of presenting folksongs, especially British Music Hall songs.

He was also responsible for animating Gorey's illustrations for PBS's "Mystery".

He will certainly be missed.

Never knew Derek Lamb, but I discovered his Folkways 'Music Hall' LP only a short time ago, and it is a current favourite. His delivery was very detailed and humourous. It seems he was American by nationality, but his singing sounded quite authentically Cockney, at least to my untrained ears.

Wondered what else he had done in the way of music, as internet searches revealed nothing. But it seems he certainly had an intersting career as a filmmaker.

Uke,

Derek was from London, England and moved to Montreal around 1958 or '59. He later lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, then back to Montreal and back again to Cambridge.
