There is a new book out titled "Clapton's Guitar". For all you guitar geeks this is a fun read. It is all about Wayne Henderson making a guitar for Eric Clapton. I feel very priviledged to be the happy owner of #342 guitar built by Wayne. It's a dream guitar from the get go and it's not even broken in yet!!! :0)

Anyway, the story about Clapton's guitar is interesting and fun.

Greg, how does one order from Wayne Henderson if one is prepared to wait for so long?

I cannot find anything on the Internet about that.

I ordered it directly from him. I run into Wayne and Helen at some festivals. Actually, I had another guitar built by Bill Collings and in 1996 I let Wayne play it. He loved it.

Wayne needs to be pestered on a very regular basis in order to get him to build a instrument, and I'm not really into pestering. My bandmate has a guitar and a mandolin built by Wayne and I know how much pestering was involved in getting them done. I know Eric Clapton had to wait years for his to be built.

Wayne's instruments are wonderful...

He has no web presence, as far as I know...

I seem to recall that Peter Rowan plays a Henderson guitar - a 000-45 style. And he has owned an F-5 mandolin too. So any news on when you can expect delivery ?

I don't know why I got mine so fast because I didn't "pester" him very much. My friend said that I had to call him and remind him about building my guitar, which I did, but not very much at all. Maybe it had to do with my having sent him money steadily over a period of a year and a half. Any way, I got it after 2 years. It's a real joy for me to have in my life.

Margo, how did you order it from him? I wouldlike to contact him for that purpose but I do not know how to do it. I cannot visit him as I live in another country.

I am knee-deep in the most wonderful guitar-lover's book--"Eric Clapton's Guitar" by Allen St. John.

If you suffer from GAS, yearn for a pre-war Martin, or have ever lusted after the hand-crafted beauties produced with love and art by men like Wayne Henderson, you must read this book. It really captures the heart and magic of the well-made acoustic.

Yes I read it when it came out a couple of years ago - for anyone into acoustic guitars this is a great read.

This is a perfect book for folks who aren't involved in music the way we are. I'm not a guitarist, but I've heard Henderson a few times and seen the output of his guitarbuilding workshop at Augusta, and that's what got me to snatch the book up off the library browsing shelf before anyone else could grab it.

St. John's writing brings you right into the workshop, understanding the stages of construction and insights into the people involved in traditional music. You could go from totally ignorant to very well informed from this book alone. If you KNOW the names of the people involved - and I got a great deal of retrospective glee out of how Clapton himself wasn't a character in this book, or really signify more than a concept - this book is great fun to feel like you know more of the backstory than the casual reader.

For a guitarist who'd like a better idea of how their guitar makes the kind of music it does or has the quirks they deal with, this story can edcucate in a totally painless way. I wish more artist/craftspeople of Henderson's degree of creativity and abilty had what they do documented so completely.

Yep...pretty sure that's him. So long ago...circa '68-'69. We were younger then...LOL. And it was Virginia...Nice guy, we sat there together while he did it...Just some dots on the neck...Memories...

Had a drink with him and Ginger Baker in his Cream days after the Albert Hall gig. Saw him several times over the years, still the master.
