Well Dunc, you join a long list of people who've made a spectacle (groan) of themselves in the vicinity of Gainsborough. Remember Canute?! or Knut as it is also spelt. And no, that is not KP Nut with the "P" extracted! He was about these parts with his Dad, Sweyn Forkbeard.

More history, make of that what you will!.

Yes I was there Duncan. It was so funny.

I thought for a minute that you were spoofing, until the bloke came back and asked if anybody had seen his glasses. Hoot.

Its becuase the beer is stronger and better quality up here :-)

Well Les, they were all on nasty lookin' canned beers - musta bin the lead solder a la Franklin expedition!
Personally - I spied the predicament in good time (as George pointed out up above) and sent a courier round to the Morrisons next door.
Cheap bottled beer! My word, some of it over 7% - Eek!
Don't think the Arts Centre Officials would've approved!
Had to hide it!
But mostly they got high on singing mightily all night. Rah!

OK - I'm a bit unoccupied at work and rambling a bit just now... but what the hey...
I thought I might explain the 'glasses' quip from George too (though you may have been one of those there Les, others reading this thread won't have known what El G was referring to....
At Gainsboro Fest in Oct I was (blush) asked to sign a few CDs after a concert.
The first chap in the queue lent me his specs as I couldn't see a thing close up and mine were packed away.
Collecting his signed CD he turned and left me on with the next...and on...
Over half an hour later (after I'd helped the organisers move all the chairs down a flight of stairs!!)
Fest 'main-person' (Sue) turned and said 'Oh, you've got new glasses on'.
I pulled 'em off to look at 'em and realised what at happened.
At that PRECISE moment, through the window in front of me I could see this red-faced figure powering purposefully up the path towards the door...
Poor chap had just come hot-foot back from his hotel to try and rescue them! The timing was spot on!
The small crowd of helpers around not only laughed themselves silly at me, but haven't given up extracting the Mickey since.
Hic! HFA - Duncan

Cheers El G.
Just had a thought - the best bit of the whole evening (for me) was the Herga folk
all singing as 'replacements' for my electric folk-rock band on the 'instrumental' sections of 'Woodshed Boys'!!!
To hear all then mad folk scat singing the fiddle and leccie guitar parts...hee hee...

Dye-dee-dum... dye-dee-diddle-dee, dye dee diddle dee! (etc)

Bloody marvellous!! made my whole trip.
Bless 'em. - Duncan

Any time, Duncan! You are most welcome whenever you can tear yourself away from oop norf (note Norvern/Cockney accent).

By the by, The Irish lady is Mary O'Connor, a source singer herself, who has been reverently referred to by Martin Carthy in the past (I think he got some songs off her).

And the fine lady with the camera is Mudcat's own Moses (Christine), who duos with The Singing Ref (Steve).

Hearty thanks you kind Herga people.
I had a great time among you - what fine singers - all joining in from the first song and on till the end - marvellous.
Really makes a chap feel right at home!
A few highlights (for me!)...
The room's lighting! (how DID we ignore it?) hee hee
Deep resonant bass lines from J Collins...
Great harmonies all around...
Mighty foot stompin' from Sandy Easton! (so glad to find it wasn't ME! - I couldn't understand, at first, why my foot tapping was SO loud!)...
George as a warm up artist...(the honour all mine)
Mike S's 'Florins on a bar' song - grand!...
The interplay with the fine lady that was busy with her camera - a built-in foil that give me something extra to work with...
...and similarly with the (Irish?) lady that kept up the banter (to the same effect) and generously offered me a 'resource' book afterwards!...
I hope I get down there again some time....
though not through the Plough Roundabout ever again!!!
(Dunc needs navigation lessons!!!)
Cheers! HFA - Duncan McFarlane

Looked at that site above Mick. Very interesting, especially the piece about Mary. I think Duncan should write a song about Anne Bonny as well don't you?...'Tis only fair after all.

I love pirates! Had better stop right there though, else I shall be in terrible trouble on here! ;0)

I knew you'd all enjoy his music! I can hear you all singing along merrily, as I type this, just as we all did at Otley......

...so George...they HAVE a 'local' beer in Harrow now? GOSH! I think they need to change the name though, it'll NEVER catch on with that one! ;0)

'Mary Read' (or Reid or Reed...whatever) is a really thoughtful song isn't it Kitty? All those adventures, all that swashbuckling and Duncan takes you into her last days, where as a mother...realising that she'll never live to see her son grow up, she asks others to look after him for her and to enusre that he's brought up well and strong. He really brings out the 'human' element, tears at your heartstrings when you imagine her emotions. I can't ever play that one without getting upset...poor Mary!

Ah well.....time to go....all this stress of wrong dates and subtracting the hours, er...wrongly, has fair worn me out! ;0)

Well done Duncan!

He was brilliant of course. Didn't trust the local beer, of course (which raises him further in my estimation, but then he's been raised on Black Sheep, so you can't blame him for eschewing the catspiss). As Kitty said - the mix was good, his intros are always interesting, and his performance up to his high standard.

We like to think we gave as good as we got with the choruses too; a nice roomful of regulars tonight.

So...come on everyone......HOW DID IT GO????

We've all taken over as 'da management' Duncan...you go and relax somewhere and take it easy! ;0)

Robin Hood's Bay? Ahhh!...HOW could I forget that song? "Take me down to Robin Hood's Bay...take me down, roll me down....Take me down to Robin Hood's Bay and roll me down the hill..and when...."

Always makes me feel happy that song! Never been there, but I've got lots of piccies of it now. When we went to Otley I fell in love with Yorkshire and came home with all sorts of books about it...with PICCIES! ;0)....Also I've got some of those beautiful cards that The National Trust have in their shops...bought mine in York..Ohh....don't get me started on York..WHAT a beautiful city!Anyway...one of those cards is a wonderful photograph of Robin Hood's Bay AND it's taken by a photographer whose name is...wait for it.....Joe Cornish (!!!) 'tis a sign! ;0)

Look...I've just found his site AND it's got the very card that I'm talking about on there....main page on the right hand side:

http://www.joecornish.com/

So now, I walk past Joe's piccie on my wall in the kitchen and Duncan's song comes into my mind. Do you think Robin Hood's Bay is 'calling me' for some reason? Where's that Martin Carthy?...He'd be able to answer that one! ;0)

Will sit tight now and wait to hear from everyone.

Lizzie :0)

I logged on to do the 'shameless self promotion'
( seemingly neccessary when one doesn't have agent or management)
to find it done for me. Thank you!

Cheers, HFA (Duncan McFarlane)

PS George, you rogue....likewise, vice versa!
See you at Herga - and I'm guest at Cecil Sharp House in January 06
Can you get along to that one too? Would be my pleasure.

We have our very own 'Duncan McFarlane Fan Club' down here in Sidmouth!

Shucks...How I wish I was in Harrow tonight!

Get along there and see him guys....you will have SUCH a great night...and get him to sing his 'Not PC' song....very, very clever and SO funny! ;0) (Not that I understand a word of it of course, being the lady that I am!) ;0) And 'Bed of Straw' and 'Canadee-i-o' (hear that one with his band...sensational!.....and....oh yes...has anyone heard his new one 'Butterside Down' yet? That's GREAT!....and 'Can't Go There'...and....

'Woodshed Boys' is on all the time in our house 'Strollin' Johnny'...fantastic CD, brilliant to dance to as well.

I shall never forget this Sidmouth Festy just gone when Duncan and his band were down and they started off playing the 'Twohey Step', for those that don't know it begins with a quiet intro...and the audience sat there politely watching and tapping their feet 'Oh so gently' but I was grinning all over, as I knew what was about to hit them and suddenly there it was...POW! And they all come in together with music that literallly blasts the roof off the place! FANTASTIC!!!!! We had to get up and dance at that point....me and my young lad...such a wonderful night.

We saw Duncan's Electric and Acoustic band at Otley this year and we enjoyed ourselves (and them) immensely again. Have yet to see him solo...but we're working on it! ;0)

He'll have you all singing along in no time.

Hope EVERYONE has a splendid time. Oh....and for those that can't go, here's his site:

http://www.duncanmcfarlane.co.uk/

I'm just off to listen to my 'Bed of Straw' CD and pretend I'm down there....sorry 'UP' there with you all.....too many years of living in Pinner.

Ahhhh, that's better...'The Famous Floating B' has just started.......

'Bring 'em down' Duncan!

"Unearthed" as in "where did you dig him up from"? Surely not. I do believe Duncan was a favourite in the festivals even before Snorbans heard of him. And yes, he is a "flash git", or as we term it dahn sarf "a b*****d".

Me, I don't know what the fuss is about! I grant you, he writes excellent songs, and he plays a mean guitar and performs them brilliantly, and does great arrangements of traditional songs too, and he has a pleasant personality and can give a most entertaining evening. So? Just because I cannot get his choruses out of my head, that means nothing, I tell you, nothing! Who - me jealous?

Great original songs, highly singable choruses, brilliant guitar work and lively, infectious performance.

Doesn't get down south too often, so don't miss this chance!

Can't wait to hear the 'Herga Wall of Sound' get stuck into his choruses.
