"Love is a rose and it grows like a rose.
I found a rose nestled in someone's hair
Sweet was the rose and never a made was so fair.
In her eyes there was moonlight, and a rose in her hair,
In my arms there was noone,
So I just put her there -
On her lips was a promise, in my heart was a pray'r,
When I finally went, I went home with the scent
of the rose in her hair.

In her eyes there was ... [repeat the song].

The song is from "Broadway Gondolier" and Felix Knight sings it beautifully in the following videoclip:

In the meantime for those of you who'd like to sing it to Simani's version of 'The Rose in her Hair,' here's a provisional translation in Ambonese Malay, meter and rhyme :

Pada tanggal satu, bulan Pebuari,
Ostrali satu, naek ke posisi,
ribuan jepang, tajatuh mati,
tatembak senapan, tentara Ostrali, di Pulau Ambon.

Ostrali satu, namanya Dolan,
menembak mati, Jepang ribuan,
dia zeng lari, tra mau undur e,
sampe tatembak, peluru Jepang, di Kudamati.

Ch.
Ostrali satu, namanya Dolan,
ditembak mati, di pinggir jalan,
kubur dibawah, pohon Gandaria,
Oh Sio mama, dan ade, tra dapat lia.

Dimana-mana, takisahkan,
Ostrali satu, namanya Dolan,
ditembak mati, orang Jepang,
sio mama dan papa, bini dan ana, tra dapa lia.

Just had a listen to the youtube tune, sounds like Stewball the pony and Lennon's Xmas song to me. The Ambonese tune I know for the 'Lagu Dolan' is different indeed and more like a Schottishe. Next trip to Ambon I'll track down some old dancebands and get the whole thing. Better still get one of their dancebands to play and record it. Ambonese music of the period wasn't so dissimilar to the woolshed dance stuff, they call it 'Nostalgia' or 'Oldtime' music these days but contemporary Ambonese ballads still have their roots in it. And the kids still do the oldtime dances like the Timorese.

Here's a version I heard on Spotify:

THE ROSE IN HER HAIR
English words by Al Dubin; music by Harry Warren; ©1935.
Italian words by Manuel Emanuel.*
As sung by Dick Powell on "The Great Songwriters – Harry Warren" (2012)

CHORUS: In her eyes, there was moonlight and the rose in her hair.
In my arms, there was no one, so I just put her there.
On her lips was a promise; in my heart was a prayer.
When I finally went, I went home with the scent
Of the rose in her hair.

VERSE: Love is a rose and it grows like a rose.
I found a rose nestled in someone's hair.
Sweet was the rose, and never a maid was so fair.

[Repeat chorus]

[Chorus replacing lyrics with "ah-ah-ah" etc.]

[Chorus in Italian that I am unable to transcribe.]

Well well never thought anybody was interested. Father inlaw played this one with his Ambonese police danceband, all fiddles and hawaiian slackstring guitars. It's a waltz tune, lots of verses but they only sing one with chorus. It starts 'Ostrali satu namanya Dolan ditembak mati di pinggir jalan, kubur dibawah pohon gandaria, sio mama dan ade tra dapa lia. ch. Ostrali satu namanya Dolan kitong Ambon punya pahlawan x2'] [A lone Australian his name was Dolan, he was gunned down by the side of the road, buried beneath the gandaria tree, Oh his poor mum and family couldn't see him.' The muslims don't like it and attacked his memorial the 'Tugu Dolan' during the recent war. Anzac and the Maluku RMS Independence Days fall on the same dste so it's political. A muslim Bugus from Makassar betrayed him and showed the Japs how to get behind his position, so the story goes.

G'day GUEST (22 May 13 - 09:09 PM),

Thanks ... it is interesting to see the two additional newspaper items ... each gives quite a different slant on the events ... as well as some different parochial slant (and different versions of the precise details of engagement ... ) for whatever actually happened ...!

"Song of Doolan"

Google that, Bob. There are two other articles in the same paper. One from 1946 and another from 1949. I don't know whether or not you've seen them.

G'day GUEST (Date: 22 May 13 - 07:40 PM),

Thanks ... that is the site that first alerted me to the multi-lingual / cross-custom nature of what started as someone else's 'simple WW 2 song query - forwarded' ... to me!

It was a damned interesting insight into the mixed liguistic and cultural history of this song ... and the spur to track it down ... and see if we can get this piece of really Aussie history into our own "folk music'... and share the Ambonese pride in the valour of one of our 'Aussie' warriors!

Regards,

BobB

G'day GUEST (Date: 22 May 13 - 03:01 PM),

Thanks for that, but the India University site says "Sheet Music not available".

I'll see ... when I get my computer back from the repair shop ( ... tonight ... Please! ...) just what leeneia's MIDI looks like as 'dots' ... and, I suspect, do a bit of adjustment to get even length lines ...

... And I need to find the Ambonese "Driver Doolan" song (the Ambonese language version MAY be in the Australian War Museum holdings) - but no chance of an actual field recording ... about two decades too early for portable and battery-driven tape recorders.

Thanks all ... and Regards,

BobB

Note that the first line of the song as done in Broadway Gondolier does not appear in the Newfoundland version.

Then note lyrics at the following (the screwed up word is nestled):

Oops. I thought I had got rid of those triplets before I saved this for Bob. Well, it should be easy to simplify them out of there, esp. by going to YouTube and listening to singers sing it.

(I got the triplets from the version by Will Osborne's orchestra.)

G'day again leenia,

(... you may need to tinker with it.)

Given that I seem to be trying to find what might have happened to a 19th century music-hall song ( ... or, at least, its melody ... ) in the progression:

Pre-WW2 stage performance / (maybe) a life as a popular 'sing-along' song in the Australian music halls / Aussie PoWs singing as they work on the Ambonese roads / Ambonese villagers taking up their "Australian Song" / whatever happens when a 'pop song' is fitted to a last-ditch attack on one's captors ... with a rifle, a revolver and half a dozen grenades / Or, in the apparent Malay - back to English translation of 1945: " ... Thousands of soldiers of Japan lay killed and wounded, / Shot by the great guns, machine guns and rifles / Of the Australians on Ambon ..."

... I'll be in for some interesting time(signature)s!

Regards,

BobB

I have made a MIDI of the tune for "The Rose in her Hair." I wish I could PM it to you, but PM's don't seem to allow attachments. Instead I'll send it to Joe Offer, and if he's not on vacation or anything, he will post it here.

I made the MIDI by listening to performances on YouTube. It wasn't easy, so you may need to tinker with it.

Keep an eye on this thread, and when Joe posts it, you can download it to your computer.

G'day again: (GUEST?),leeneia,

I do hope my home box will still have all the music apps ... when I returns from the computer technician's treatment for "Parkinson's lapses".

I can certainly deal with / read / play / write MIDI ... once everything is nailed back into place!

GUEST of 21 May 13 - 12:51 PM,

Without seeing an actual, dateable, setting with all three stanzas we can't be sure of the age of the full song ... but it seems bloody unlikely that it started off with only the one stanza! (That, especially, when we are told that the Ambonese learned the tune from the Australian prisoners working on the roads around Kudmati ... nobody sings one stanza all day ... and stays sane!)

I'll chase that up when my home computer comes back home from the repair shop!

Regards,

BobB

G'daya again "GUEST" ...

Indeed it does!

I have just found myself chasing the tune to see how I could fit ... to what the Ambonese villagers made into "The Australian Song" ... then into a song of praise for the fight - the the death ... of Driver Tom Doolan ... the English words (translated) of which appeared in his home town newspaper in 1945!

If I can find the 'dots' ... I might be able to work out what happened in the Ambonese phase ... and maybe ... work up a version bringing the Ambonese sentiments back to Australian English ...

Regards,

BobB

G'day GUEST (of 20 May 13 - 03:24 PM),

Thanks!

That does appear to represent a holding of the (sheet ...?) music - but I can't get any view of what they actually have. I'm not wrapped in the idea of paying up front ... and finding it isn't what I'm after.

I'll see what my friends in the NLA can suss out ... from within the organisation ... before I shell out blind on something that I just need to see to support someone else's query!

At least the Mudcat has been the first site that actually recognises any more than just the first stanza of the song ... indeed, Australia's iconic country & western style singe Slim Dusty issues a recording of The Rose in Her Hair that only uses the first stanza ... twice ... each sandwiched between ...

Oh-de-lay-ee-ay-ee-ay-ee-dee
Oh-de-lay-ee-ay-ee-ay-ee-dee
Oh-de-lay-ee-ay-ee-ay-ee-dee
When I finally went, I went home with the scent
Of the rose in her hair ...
... twice!

Regard(les)s,

Bonb

G'day ( ... or is that G'decade ... nearly!)

I should have known that ... after all the fuzzy edges of the web - I'd find a somewhat useful reference in the Mudcat's muddy Missisipp ...!

I'm trying to find reliable sheet music to conform the Australian World War Two troops' hearing of this as a popular song from 1935 ... known and sung by Australian troops in Kudmati on the outskirts of Ambon Dutch New Guinea ... of that day ... ?) because it was learned, from them, by the local villagers - and made by them into a song about the heroic death of Australian Driver William Doolan ... single handedly attacking Japanese troops ... until taken out by a sniper!

I have an Australian translation of their song ... from his home town newspaper (Morwell Advertiser, 13 December 1945) but no written music ... and no idea of what the Ambonese did to the tune during their innings...! If I can find a viewable / &-or downloadable set of dots, I can start to see what we can make in Driver Doolan's memory!

... He does get off to a bad start - with all those 19th century bushrangers (armed banditry) a century before!!!

Any workable link to a set of 1935 - 1945 'dots' would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Bob

I am looking for a source for the lyrics to "THE ROSE IN HER HAIR."
Here is what I can get from the Foster & Allen version, but do not know if I am hearing it exactly correct. Thanks. jim

THE ROSE IN HER HAIR

In her eyes, there was moonlight and the rose in her hair.
In my arms, there was no one, so I put her there.
On her lips was a promise. in my heart was a prayer.
When I finally went, I went home with the scent
Of the rose in her hair.

On her face, there was beauty, a picture to see.
In her arms, there was someone she loved more than me.
In my mind was a vision, so lifelike and clear.
When I finally went, I went home with the scent
Of the rose in her hair.

And when I awakened, it was only a dream,
For she lay there beside me so gently asleep.
As I kissed her in slumber, I whispered a prayer
And peacefully went back to sleep with the scent
Of the rose in her hair.

TAG: As I kissed her in slumber, I whispered a prayer
And peacefully went back to sleep with the scent
Of the rose in her hair.
