The Ambonese tune I know for the 'Lagu Dolan' is different indeed and more like a Schottishe. Next trip to Ambon I'll track down some old dancebands and get the whole thing. Better still get one of their dancebands to play and record it. Ambonese music of the period wasn't so dissimilar to the woolshed dance stuff, they call it 'Nostalgia' or 'Oldtime' music these days but contemporary Ambonese ballads still have their roots in it. And the kids still do the oldtime dances like the Timorese. |

Father inlaw played this one with his Ambonese police danceband, all fiddles and hawaiian slackstring guitars. It's a waltz tune, lots of verses but they only sing one with chorus. It starts 'Ostrali satu namanya Dolan ditembak mati di pinggir jalan, kubur dibawah pohon gandaria, sio mama dan ade tra dapa lia. ch. Ostrali satu namanya Dolan kitong Ambon punya pahlawan x2'] [A lone Australian his name was Dolan, he was gunned down by the side of the road, buried beneath the gandaria tree, Oh his poor mum and family couldn't see him.' The muslims don't like it and attacked his memorial the 'Tugu Dolan' during the recent war. Anzac and the Maluku RMS Independence Days fall on the same dste so it's political. A muslim Bugus from Makassar betrayed him and showed the Japs how to get behind his position, so the story goes. |

(That, especially, when we are told that the Ambonese learned the tune from the Australian prisoners working on the roads around Kudmati ... nobody sings one stanza all day ... and stays sane!) If I can find the 'dots' ... I might be able to work out what happened in the Ambonese phase ... and maybe ... work up a version bringing the Ambonese sentiments back to Australian English ... I'm trying to find reliable sheet music to conform the Australian World War Two troops' hearing of this as a popular song from 1935 ... known and sung by Australian troops in Kudmati on the outskirts of Ambon Dutch New Guinea ... of that day ... ?) because it was learned, from them, by the local villagers - and made by them into a song about the heroic death of Australian Driver William Doolan ... single handedly attacking Japanese troops ... until taken out by a sniper! I have an Australian translation of their song ... from his home town newspaper (Morwell Advertiser, 13 December 1945) but no written music ... and no idea of what the Ambonese did to the tune during their innings...! If I can find a viewable / &-or downloadable set of dots, I can start to see what we can make in Driver Doolan's memory! ... He does get off to a bad start - with all those 19th century bushrangers (armed banditry) a century before!!! Any workable link to a set of 1935 - 1945 'dots' would be greatly appreciated!
