Subject: RE: Happy! - Nov 12 (Bukka White) From: Azizi Date: 12 Nov 05 - 09:17 AM I didn't know that Bukka White's birth name. Thanks for that. The musician was named after Booker T. Washington. see this quote from this website [minor additions from me are in brackets] http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/aap/bookert.html "For decades, Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was the major African-American spokesman in the eyes of white America. Born a slave in [Piedmont]Virginia [April 5, 1856],Washington was educated at Hampton Institute, Norfolk, Virginia. He began to work at the Tuskegee Institute in 1881 and built it into a center of learning and industrial and agricultural training" -snip- Booker T. Washington is still considered an important but highly controversial leader of his race. BTW, I read somewhere that the "T" in Booker T. Washington is said to stand for "Taliferro" [Taliafero; spelling?]. I also read that "Booker" kept his name because he felt it alluded to his love of reading. According to this my reading [sources ???], he selected his other two names-Washington presumably for "George Washington", the first American president and "Taliferro" because???. |

The D. stood for Dano, as the last thing his mother saw before going into the delivery room was the last part of a "Hawaii 5-0" episode where McGarrett & Co. have caught a female murderer. |
