At the Cirque Napoléon in Paris, Jules Leotard (1838-1870) 1st performs his own invention,
the Flying Trapeze circus act, on 11/12/1859.

Safety nets will not be introduced until 1871 and Léotard uses a pile of mattresses to cushion possible falls.

He wears a new article of clothing he designed himself but I forget what it is called.

Before too long, a very popular song will be written about him:

He'd fly through the air with the greatest of ease,
That daring young man on the flying trapeze.
His movements were graceful, all girls he could please
And my love he purloined away.

Ah! I thought you might have my old philosophical pal Jean-Francois Lyotard (of postmodern fame) in mind. Ah, well. Who knows, maybe they're related?
