Another exagerated scenario that disturbs me about Moore are his scenes in Bowling for Columbine about Canada ... it was baloney, especially about no one locking their doors .... sorry, when we lived in Toronto we certainly locked our doors ... we were broken into twice, so were all are neigbours on our street ... in fact violent street shootings are a concern back in T.O. now .... hell, even here in friendly little 'ol Saint John I have an alarm system to keep the crack addicts from breaking in.

Hate to tell you this, ol' buddy, but that is the term used by the entertainment industry to describe what Moore does: mix truth and fiction until the line between them is obliterated. I make up stuff for the purpose of humor quit often, but I did not come up with this one. There really a new category and it really is credited to Michael Moore.

It is not quite as simple and blatant as The WorldNet scandal sheet would have it. They evidently took material from Peter Schweizer's book and put their own spin on it.

Basically what Schweizer says about Michael Moore's stock ownership is that in order to protect the money he has made he has formed a foundation; the foundation in turn has bought stock, including in Halliburton. A stockbroker's first duty is to diversify, and I can easily believe that a broker will buy stocks that are pegged to keep climbing in value. If ethics were not an issue, you can't beat the current desirability of war materiel and all of its accompanying support systems. Same is true of pharmaceuticals and a half dozen other thngs. Moore may quite legitimately feel that he doesn't own stock and doesn't dabble in the stock market, even if he has authorized his brokers to use their own judgment.

Then Schweizer makes the claim that Michael Moore is racist because "Moore almost never hires black people." But that is not what racism is. If he hires SOME African Americans, it is up to the accuser to prove his point.

He also claims that 'conservative hypocrites' and their families are hurt when their inconsistencies are discovered by the media. 'Liberal hypocrites', on the other hand, he says, have a different experience. "When the liberal-left abandon their principles and become hypocrites," he says, "they actually improve their lives. Their kids end up in better schools, they have more money, and their families are more content."   With that, I think he is actually telling us that conservatives' kids do end up in better schools, that the conservatives do have more money and their families are more content. He doesn't address the question of whether conservatives and liberals alike should apply ethics in attempting to make life more equitable in a society.

I respect Michael Moore for one thing above others: when the whole country was swarming with the buglike echoes of the Bush Gangsta Line on WMDs and everyone was slapping "patriotism" stickers on their foreheads, Michael Moore stood up and pointed out succinctly that not only did the emperor have no clothes, he also had no conscience and no integrity.

He broke a logjam of unexpressed worry that was widespread but suppressed among thousands of thinking citizens who saw the contradictions but could not find a focal point to communicate what they saw.

At that time, in that context, he was a moral voice in a jungle of opportunistic compromises and immoral war-mongering.

He deserves a vote of thanks for that.

If he has a non-profit foundation that has invested in Hallburton, it is perfectly possible that he is not making those decisions himself. NFP organizations often have their own boards and their investments are often made by even more removed decisionmakers in the invenstment communioty. Has anyone bothered to isolate the facts around this slander? Or are we just beating drums and dancing around the campfire here?

I agree Amos, and I thought highly of Moore on his efforts ... but I now question Moore's integrety. I have not heard any defense from Moore yet, but I am waiting.

Investing in Haliburton (for profit) is as immoral as one can get. Don't forget where those profits are coming from. Sorry.

His non-profit organization is listed as his home ... he is close enough, and the ones who are investing for that organization are close enough to understand what is going on.   

I don't beleive one can use which wing you are, as an excuse for immoral hypocracy.
