Subject: Need name of song/artist From: GUEST,Ellen Date: 21 Sep 02 - 08:24 PM What is the name of the song that is being played as part of soundtracks, etc., a lot lately, that has a refrain "Hallelujah, hallelujah" repeated? It's a love song. Any tips would be appreciated. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need name of song/artist From: Sorcha Date: 21 Sep 02 - 09:02 PM Don't really have a clue what you are talking about, but could it be the "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handels' Messiah? "Halleluja, halleluja, Haaaaa-laaaaay-lu--ya"? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need name of song/artist From: rangeroger Date: 21 Sep 02 - 09:07 PM You're probably talking about "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen. It has gained a lot of attention from the the animated movie "Shrek". James Cale sang the version in the movie, although Rufus Wainright does it on the soundtrack CD. Jeff Buckley does a beautiful version on his "Grace" CD. I learned it from a performance by Sheryl Crow, who got it from the Buckley CD. rr |

Subject: Lyr Add: HALLELUJAH (Leonard Cohen) From: GUEST Date: 11 Oct 02 - 02:55 PM from Various Positions cd HALLEUJAH Now I've heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this The fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her She tied you To a kitchen chair She broke your throne, and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah You say I took the name in vain I don't even know the name But if I did, well really, what's it to you? There's a blaze of light In every word It doesn't matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah I did my best, it wasn't much I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you And even though It all went wrong I'll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah |
Subject: Lyr Add: HALLELUJAH (Leonard Cohen) From: hilda fish Date: 14 Nov 05 - 05:40 AM Here's the other song that moves me in a way that's quite scary. If I start thinking about it I've probably got a lot of songs that put me somewhere else - a personal and totally spiritual or emotional space - for example Mahler's Song of the Earth (I know I know he is heavy handed but......) However, this song, and Forever Young weave around me and are written on my skin in such a way that I would not be who I am if I had no access to them. I am glad of them. I heard there was a secret chord That David played and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? Well it goes like this: The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift The baffled king composing hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah Well your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya She tied you to her kitchen chair She broke your throne and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah Well, maybe I've been here before I've seen this room and I've walked this floor I used to live with Leonard before I knew ya I've seen your flag on the marble arch But love is not a victory march It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah There was a time when you let me know What's really going on below But now you never show that to me, do ya? But remember when I moved in you And the holy dove was moving too And every breath you drew was hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah And maybe there's a god above But all I've ever learned from love Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya Well it's not a cry that you hear at night It's not somebody who's seen the light It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, halle... It's not what you're told It's not her face It's not his touch In the room you both share Where he's gone when he loved When your time and your memory fills your dreams When you're honest and together Together no more No more Hallelujah, until you're nothing Hallelujah, baby, until she's everywhere Hallelujah, until together you are somewhere I'd lost Hallelujah, hallelujah. |
Subject: RE: Halleluja From: matai Date: 14 Nov 05 - 06:10 AM It was played to brilliant effect at the end of a german film called 'The Edukators' Cohen is one of my favourite song-writers. And Buckley's version is magnificent. |
Subject: RE: Halleluja From: greg stephens Date: 14 Nov 05 - 06:16 AM I dont fully understand the second verse of Hallelujah. The first half is clearly about David's erotic peeping Tom bit with Bathsheba, but then it goes on to haircutting which sounds more Samson and Delilah. Or did Bathsheba cut off David's hair, as well? That aside, a stunning song. As a matter of interest, hilda fish, are you thinking of Leonard Cohen or Jeff Buckley in this context? |
Subject: RE: Halleluja From: Morticia Date: 14 Nov 05 - 06:18 AM One of my favourite songs ever although there is a not very adequate cover going on at the moment......forgotten her name but I thought it was poor. |
Subject: RE: Halleluja From: rhyzla Date: 14 Nov 05 - 07:26 AM Jeff Buckley's version is other-worldly, in my opinion. I'm frightened to cover this song, as I feel it is so difficult to do justice to it!! |
Subject: RE: Halleluja From: *Laura* Date: 14 Nov 05 - 10:07 AM I like Rufus Wainright's version. But Buckley's is incredible. |
Subject: RE: Halleluja From: akenaton Date: 14 Nov 05 - 10:53 AM Spot on Laura...Great song, magnificent singer ...Ake |
Subject: RE: Halleluja From: hilda fish Date: 14 Nov 05 - 02:39 PM I am thinking of Jeff Beck's version of it. I've heard many versions but it's the old Jeff's that is getting to me at present. The song is brilliant. Whatever the lyrics mean, and they are clear, it is the feelings that the totality of the song engenders including my own life 'sound track' as it were. Given that, a song can't achieve significance unless it has a number of extremely intelligent elements going on in my humble opinion. |
Subject: RE: Halleluja From: Lanfranc Date: 14 Nov 05 - 03:17 PM Where did that last verse come from? It wasn't on Cohen's original recording and it wasn't on the Smudged Air site when I downloaded the lyrics to learn the song. It doesn't scan or fit the metre of the other verses (or, IMHO, make much sense - I could be missing something). Is it another inchoate ending as in "One of us cannot be wrong" that was added in a live performance? Was it written by Cohen, or is it another's "embellishment"? I love the song, too, but I don't think I'd bother with that verse. Alan |
Subject: RE: Halleluja From: sharyn Date: 14 Nov 05 - 03:19 PM I much prefer an earlier version of this (Cohen rewrites obsessively) that Cohen himself sang. Verse 1 and 2 are as you have them, but then: 3) You say I take the name in vain -- I don't even know the name, But even if I did, well, what's it to ya? There's a blaze of light in every word, It doesn't matter what you heard, The holy, or the broken, Hallelujah. 4) I did my best -- it wasn't much: I could not feel, so I tried to touch. I've told the truth. I did not come to fool ya. And even though it all went wrong I'll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelelujah. Hallelujah, Hallelu-u-jah. It ends there. I find it much simpler, clearer and more exciting than later versions. |
Subject: RE: Halleluja From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 14 Nov 05 - 03:47 PM It's pretty, but miserable. Is it Bulkley that mispronounces it halleluLia? |
Subject: RE: Halleluja From: Morticia Date: 14 Nov 05 - 04:03 PM I wasn't aware of the last verse in the version Hilda gives either....and I'm pretty sure it isn't Buckley who mispronounces Halleluja...... |

Subject: RE: Halleluja From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 14 Nov 05 - 10:11 PM Gotta say, that last verse doesn't seem to go with the rest - too much sweetness and light - couldn't be Cohen. :-) I think the song could go into the Guinness Book of Records as the most use of the word 'Hallejulah' in a song that isn't particularly religious (in spite of the imagery). |
Subject: RE: Halleluja From: sharyn Date: 15 Nov 05 - 12:56 AM Are you kidding, Jeremiah? You can't get much more religious than saying "There's a blaze of light in every word/ It doesn't matter what you heard" and "Even though it all went wrong I'll stand before the Lord of Song with nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah." Cohen is a religious person, has used liturgy before in his songs -- e.g. "Who By Fire." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) From: Leadfingers Date: 14 Dec 08 - 07:46 PM There was a discussion of The Cowell on Beeb Radio Four today ! One of the points raised (Apart from his apparent Megolamania) was the Lyrics of the 'Chosen song' , Especially that line in the First verse 'But you don't really care for music, do you?' Any Comments ? And I do a lot of Laughing Len's songs ! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) From: bobad Date: 14 Dec 08 - 08:05 PM I wouldn't read too much into the lyrics myself, a lot of Lenny's inspiration issues from his libido. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 26 Aug 12 - 12:47 PM Leonard Cohen: "I wanted to write something in the tradition of the hallelujah choruses but from a different point of view...It's the notion that there is no perfection- that there is a broken world and we live with broken hearts and broken lives but still that is no alibi for anything. On the contrary, you have to stand up and say hallelujah under those circumstances." Quote above from Crowe, cd "Tidings:" Everyone, including Cohen, sang it with the verses in different order, and leaving out or adding a verse. One might say the song is broken in the way our lives are broken. "....there is no perfection-." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) From: GUEST Date: 01 Jun 17 - 02:00 PM Since my hubris knows no bounds, I thought I'd rewrite Hallelujah with lyrics that were less poetically unfathomable. Also, I wanted to avoid the 'must rhyme with hallelujah' trap that forced the silly 'outdrew you' rhyme. It took Leonard two years to write this song. My version took fifteen minutes and it makes sense. My mother says it is much better than the original. Hallelujah – the original version A kid was born in Bethlehem And I am not one to condemn But Mary, who's the daddy of the baby? You say that God from up above Enticed you with his holy love So Joseph rolls his eyes and whispers "maybe." Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah The kid won't work for Joe no more. He's kicking down the temple door. They're saying he's a crazy agitator. Instead of doing daily chores He hangs around with local whores And claims he does the work of his creator Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah He's got some guys he hangs around And gives some sermons on a mound. But all I hear are whisperings and omens. He's saying things he shouldn't say But he will never back away And soon he's gonna get it from the Romans Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah He went too far and now he's lost They got him hanging from a cross And some are saying, "Christ, I hardly knew ye." While others cry that they suspect That someday he will resurrect And on that day they'll sing out Hallelujah! Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah! |
