My father used to sing "
I am the famous bowery bum, you've heard so much about,
the ladies hide their pocket books whenever Im about"
I have looked for this song all over but cant find any info.

Any help?

This seems to be a parody.
"We're the Boys of Camp Leo, you hear so much about.
The ladies hide their pocket-books, whenever we go out!
We're noted for dishonesty in every thing we do.
All of the people hate us, and we know you'll hate us, too!"
(From: THE RISE AND FALL of SAINT JAMES SCHOOL.)

Here's another version, evidently a kids' street song, from the Federal Writers Project:
http://unx1.shsu.edu/~his_ncp/DeadEnd.html

We are the boys of 11th street that you hear so much about
People hide their pocketbooks whenever they go out.
We're noted for our dirty work, most everything we do.
All the coppers hate us and we hope you hate us too.

My grandmother sings this song and these lyrics are only from memory, so they might be slightly off:

I'm the famous Bowery bum, you've heard so much about,
The ladies hide their pocketbooks whenever I go out,
I'm noted for my dirty work in everything I do
Everybody hates me and I hope you hate me to.

I went into a restaurant, as hungry as a bear
I went up to the man behind the counter there
Could I have one banana please, It'll make me satisfied,
He took me by the collar and he threw me right outside

They always give me the bum's rush, I'm getting weary today
To hear the people tell me: oh you dirty, drunken bum be on your way.

I went into a coffee shop, to warm my freezing hands
I put in my request for a cup of coffee and
Said he to me you dirty bum you better move along
The coffee that you drink I think is quite a bit too strong

That always give me the bum's rush, I'm getting weary today,
To hear the people tell me oh you dirty, drunken bum be on your way

I went into a farmer's house to steal a loaf of bread
But 'fore I got away his loving wife came out said
Honey, a thief is in the hall, by that time that had me locked up behind the county walls.

They always give me the bum's rush, I'm getting weary today,
To hear the people tell me oh you dirty, drunken bum, be on your way.

Now wintertime, will soon arrive the days of freezing snow
I'd better pack my bags and find a warmer place to go
So leave all the savings that you can upon your windowsill
For once I'll have a picnic and for once I'll get my fill

So goodbye ladies, goodbye ladies, goodbye ladies,
I have no handouts today!

Hope that helped!
Ash

Somewhere I have a tape of an old 78 recording of Frank Luther (?) singing this. I'll have to ask Bob Bovee.

A quick response from Bob Bovee on Facebook;

"Hi, Mark. I have this 78 by Hobo Jack Turner (actually Ernest Hare, I believe). It's from 1928 and came out on Columbia subsidiary labels: Harmony, Velvet Tone, Diva, the so-called dime store labels."

I haven't shaved almost a year, I really am afraid
In case my good old wire beard will break the razor blade

Oh, lady would you be kind enough to give me something to eat,
A loaf of bread and butter and a ten-foot slice of meat.
A piece of pie or custard to tickle my appetite
For really I'm so hungry and don't know where I'll eat tonight

Oh, sleeping against the station tra-la-la-la-la-lation
That's my recommendation, hooray, hooray, horum
For I am a bum, a jolly old bum, I live like a royal Turk;
I have good luck in bumming my chuck, God bless the man that works

Oh, sleeping in a railroad yard waiting for a train
Waiting for a westbound freight to take me home again
Going west they're loaded, going east sealed tight
I think I'll have to get aboard a fast express tonight

I've beat my way from Frisco Bay to the rock-bound coast of Maine
From Canada to Mexico and right back home again
I've cut the spruce and worked the sluice and worked on a river scow
And I've been in every calaboose in this land of liberty

The "Famous Bowery Bum" (if that's its title) doesn't look to have much in common with the well-known "Great American Bum," unless it's a parody.

And just try scanning the second line of that chorus ...

Bob
