Epworth Folk Club starts as normal at The Red Lion at around 8.15 on Wednesday 4th January. Last weeks club was excellent despite the competition from the open mike session at The Mowbray.

Ah, rate.

A good time that was had by all. But anyway, I'm here to talk about Ep'th Folk, not that.

We had another corker. Since moving down the corridor, past the gents and into Jinxies Wine Bar, the club seems to be going from strength to strength. Having a stage area helps make it more of an occasion and we get more and more people coming to listen rather than just singers. No entry fee helps too...

We had, in no particular order and I'm bound to miss one or two. (When I got there I told Reg that Richard and Albert were on holiday, just as both walked in.)

Reg & Gaz, Goff, Danny, Jim, Albert, Chris, Richard, Mike, Ian MkII, Jill, Pip & Colin, Andy, The Rookery and yours truly. Those who wished it had a cracking fiddle accompaniment by Dave.

I was sad enough to count and overall, we had a dozen people there for the noise it makes.

No Wheatsheaf next week, as most of the regulars there are on hols, and I'm down in "the smoke" and won't be back till late.

So, a week on Wednesday, back to Jinxies. Join us, I wasn't joking when I said we can put drinks on the Rookery's tab whilst he is chasing kangaroos next month.

Tonight should be good. It's the last gig for the rookery for a month or so, as he is about to start his tour down under, starting in Tasmania and ending in err Tasmania. Anyway, he has offered not one but two Northwood guitars for the raffle to make space for his increasing stock of Yamaha guitars.

Be there so you can tell your grandkids you really were there, as opposed to more people claiming they were at Live Aid than could actually fit in Wembley. I should know cos I was there.

And a grand night it was.

Backwoodsman did indeed perform as per contract and was joined in a star studded night by a motley crew of superstars and distinguished hall of fame alumni.

The highlight for me was the rookery admonishing an artisan guitar luthier for supplying guitars with cheap strings, (playing a new guitar made by him) saying he had instantly changed them for quality strings and proceeding to break one whilst tuning up. No need for satire in this thread, reality caters for all comments.

In the best of folk tradition, we had a wonderful two guitars and fiddle rendition of "Fat Bottomed Girls" by Ian, Johnathan and Dave. If indeed, fat bottomed girls make the rocking world go round, it occurred to me that Doncaster needs recognition for its contribution to astro physics.

Onwards and downwards. Next Wednesday, after the stadium quality of Jinxies @ The Red Lion, our tour continues at The Wheatsheaf in Belton for the more intimate theatre gig experience then repeat the tour ad neauseum.

Your humble reviewer might get off me sorry arse and pop down to Ferry Folk tonight.

Just reporting back from the south of France, the weather was lovely.I struggled with the lingo though, the only French I could remember was Mademoiselle from Armentieres, parlez vous?, and that didn't get me very far, just a few black looks.
Heard some nice music though, does anyone at the club know "Champs Elysees" by Joe Dassin? Francoise Hardy promised me she would bring her guitar to the next Ep'th Folk, she said she might bring Carla Bruni along too if she can spare the time.
When is the next club night so I can let her know? I hope I am not busy combining!

A very well attended night yesterday at The Red Lion. Noisy till about 9.15 then much better. Most of the regulars were there and Bob Chiswick, Dave Mitchell, and Trevor Scarrow gave us a bit of variety. Gary and Reg featured Jess as their new vocalist on a couple of numbers! We are looking to move into the wine bar to accommodate the numbers for future nights!

Mmm..   Not embracing this Mudcat lark these days, a rather unmistakeable odour permeates across the pond.

However, back here in the real world..

A smaller than normal band of balladeers, banjologists and banter in The Wheatsheaf last night but quality over quantity of course....

Note the rookerie's posts regarding The Epworth Music Day, including an acoustic session all afternoon and a folky diddly doo session at the same time as well as concerts all day all over the place. (Yours truly seems to be doing one spot in a car park. I hope they remove the red jelly babies for me.)

Some cracking singers nights and sessions going around locally these days and our two are only part of the picture. All good stuff.

Don't forget, we are only two hours from London via Kings Cross to Doncaster then Dave's Taxi, tell him Ian sent you. Alternatively, the VIP terminal at Sandtoft International Airport does a rather nice champagne whilst awaiting carriages.

A near-on perfect night at The Red Lion last night, with just a dozen of us giving us all a decent chance to play a few songs and not much background noise or chat to interfere. The pub ran out of Speckled Hen though, so my headache is a little better than it would have been!

A quiet night if truth be told. As very few of us were playing, it came back round fairly fast so an opportunity to polish off songs some of us don't normally bother with.

The pub was fairly quiet (away match for pool) so we "had the floor."

The rookery, Eric, Nigel eventually (once stoked up on beer) and yours truly started the night and eventually joined by Richard. Both other Ians supplied the audience, both being too miserable to sing. Whassisname from near me sat listening too, and one or two of the bar flies were saying they enjoyed a few of the songs.

There. A factual review without a single knob gag. Unlike the actual night....

(The rookery may be interested to know that two pints after he left, Nigel was admitting he preferred my guitar to his. Round one sorted.)

An entertaining but slightly raucous night yesterday at The Wheatsheaf. Just 6 of us and the pool room noise meant quiet retrospective songs were pointless, so we had a good sing around. Richard , Jim, John, Mike (for a while) Eric, Nigel (eventually) and young Chris (at the end) managed to play a varied repertoire including 3 Bowie tributes. It may not be folk but it was good fun.

What a great start to the year. A full house despite the absence of a few regulars. I think I counted 18 performers and half a dozen spectators. We really crammed them in , and of a remarkably high standard too! Thanks everybody and keep coming back! The gamut ran from Paul Robeson covers to Oasis covers, with a smattering of proper folk music and all sorts of stuff! The age range of the performers went from 16 to 85 and the alcohol intake from 0 to 5 pints (unless you know different?)

Yeah, I fully understand earlier on when the bar was packed that those near that end couldn't enjoy a night of music. A bit frustrating too that when Albert, Chris and Backwoodsman left, the bar emptied too, leaving us as the noisy end of the hotel!

It settled into a great night. On a very happy note, I really love how we seem to be encouraging younger people to get up in public and sing. Although, as we had two schoolgirls in the room, this meant that when I started singing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, I had a couple of err.. extra verses to try and get a laugh with, but at the last minute decided otherwise 😳
So.. Early contributions from Albert, Chris and Backwoodsman, followed by; Jim, Reg & Gary, squeezebox John, Goff, Danny, Jess, the rookery, Jill, Ian and Goff's granddaughter whose name inexcusably escapes me. Yours truly bringing up the rear.

More discussion in the beer break regarding the numbered Swiss bank account Squeezebox John mentioned a few posts up. John and I trying to find ways of spending and closing it whilst the rookery came up with suggestions of how to increase the balance. We'll be another Lehmans Brothers, mark my word.

Well....... what a great night! Unfortunately Backwoodsman, Albert and Chris abandoned ship about 9 and by ten past all the rowdies at the bar disappeared (to the Khyber) and we ended up with the best night of the year and finished at 12.30! Everyone was on form and we genuinely had a wonderful time!(and some excellent cake!- thanks Cath)) The next club is back at the Red Lion on 6th January. Have a great break and see you next year. Well, a well formed group of performers and a rather packed pub.

The beer wasn't quite as free. Mr Carthy obviously didn't get my message. The banjo remained unclaimed.

On the positive side..

The rookery regailed us with banjo and a Martin copy guitar, Danny had a couple of new songs including a festive one, Goff played an excellent collection including a bit of trad, which went down well, Richard showed that a Uke can be heard in a crowded pub and gave us some lovely songs we could join in with, Jim played some haunting melodies including a couple of reels I didn't know and the obligatory horn pipe on his pipes, Nigel and Eric sang a few together having nicked the rookery's guitar and yours truly brought up the rear. (Rumours of me playing banjo will attract the attention of my legal team.)

A nice night all told. Money and a guitar changed hands and I got yacking with the gaffer and some neighbours till the wee hours.

Se'thee at The Red Lion at Ep'th next Wednesday.

(Gerry. Not sure about Sunday at The Shovel. I'd love to make the effort but depends what time we get back. If Mrs Musket drives when we go out in the day to see friends, I won't be able to in the evening. If I drive then I can drive that night. We'll see.)

HSBC have written to me regarding the club bank account. They are not happy that it is now dormant, and want to close the account if we don't make use of it.I suppose this is not unreasonable, because it will be costing them something to operate the account and send me a statement each month. I spoke to a young lady at HSBC on the phone on Friday, and was interrogated regarding why we were not paying money in and out. I persuaded her to leave the account in operation for the present, but only until 22nd May 2016, at which date it would have to be reviewed again if we still have not used it. Do we need a bank account now?
If anyone has ideas for spending £89.94, please discuss. Ideas include a memorial to Eric, a memorial concert, local charity donation, Epworth Music Day, Christmas Party, posters advertising the club, newspaper adverts for the club, ....etc.
It was a very good night last week, I hope to come back again, but I am hopeless at late nights, five days later I am still falling asleep listening to "Look North" on TV at 6.30pm!

Nice to see Squeezebox John. That's twice in a week we have been playing together despite not having seen each other for well over a year before last Thursday.

Any road, don't forget Wheatsheaf at Belton next Wednesday. The rookery and I will be at Donny Strummers (Ukranian Club, Doncaster) next Monday if anyone wants to join us. Bob Chiswick runs a cracking club. What I haven't told the rookery yet is that my new pap pap was bought on the basis that you can't fit banjo cases in it. Weird layout I know, but what can you do? You can get a couple of guitars in the boot easily but not a banjo case apparently. It says so in the handbook.

After a slow start last weeks at the Wheatsheaf was a success!
At ten to nine, Me and my friend Tony were chatting to Eric and discussing whether to play for a bit or just go home, then Jill came, then Nigel and a couple of spectators, then Ian, and we had a lovely singaround and chorus session.

Another excellent night with only Musket, Backwoodsman and Chris missing from the regulars, and all had notes from their parents. Gary and Reg appeared again and we had a few spectators. Jim and I had returned from Whitby, full of enthusiasm and everyone seemed to have a great time. Richard, Danny, Goff, Albert and Andrew did their usual mix of interesting folk, pop, country etc and Jill and Ian did a bit of more contemporary stuff, and towards the end we had a fair bit of singalong choruses which kept us all involved.

Last night turned out nice again, (loaded comment that. Not a 'uke in sight.)

The bar flies were occasionally an issue but could have been worse and certainly didn't detract from the entertainment.

A rather folkie night in many ways. Two couples combining whistle / recorder with guitar for some good tunes and songs. Goff sang a Neil Young song which on balance is folkish. I caught Eric giving it some James Taylor for that matter. The welcome return of Bob Chiswick and some of his own songs was a treat, Mike gave us some cool blues guitar and I took on the bar flies, proving that my mouth can reach the volume of my loudest guitar if necessary. No idea if it sounded nice but that wasn't the object of the exercise.... Silly sod here got gassing and didn't waddle up the road to Chez Musket till 2.00am.

No rookery or Jim due to stewarding at Whitby. No Backwoodsman, no Albert, no Chris, no other Ian. Mind you, no me in a fortnight. Mrs Musket and I, sans alleged greyhound are off to Cyprus to sit in one of those hotel pools with a bar in the middle of it. That's all I recall from the brochure.

Eric mentioned that a song he sang happened to have a connection to the night he lost his cherry, (Bonny and Clyde, 1968 if you must know.). I reckon this could make a good theme night. Get thinking on. I'm stuck between the birdie dance and the Hokey Cokey. Some of you may have something more romantic?

I most certainly have.

A couple of months ago, Gear4Music in York had me comparing a complete mahogany parlour, Martin and Sigma. (00015SM) The main difference being solid v laminate back and sides. To be honest, the Martin wasn't five times the guitar despite being five times the price. In fact, there was little in it.

Granted. Ten years down the line, the Martin will still be improving whilst the Sigma will have peaked not too long after you bought it.

Same rules must apply to the DM ones you are looking at.

I have had a go on the DM18 and liked it. To be honest, I don't think they know how to make a bad guitar. I have often fancied a DR28 on the basis that whilst I will have a Martin again some time, my style of playing means expensive guitars for me tend to be OM/00 so a Martin OM28 if I do get one. I like 'dreads though and a Signa is a bloody good 'dread for the money.

My loose "one in one out" policy means that a 'dread is going to have to be sacrificed for this fan fret I am hanging my nose over. That'll mean I only have one 'dread left. (Although it is solid wood, wonderful sounding, excellent playing and been in my collection since the late '80s, the Jim Harley cedar / ash guitar has to find a new home. The former Mrs Musket bought it me and my Worksop Guardian mouthed son let the fact slip in the wrong company. The poor guitar gets the dead eye by both Mrs Musket and her sycophantic greyhound.

I doubt I'll have it by then, assuming it plays as good as it is hyped. I am tying it in with a business trip to huddle with legal parasites and I may wait till after our September board now. Or I might jump on a train early next week. This working lark isn't always what I dragged myself out of retirement for.

The temptation to get it mailed up is quite strong though, despite it being something you should never ever double doggy dare do.

So..

Last night..

In its own little way, it were cracking. Not many people singing but we attracted a good bar following and I reckon it was not far off midnight when we finally buggered off.

The rookery played fine guitar and uke' with some rarely let out in public songs. The other Ian nicked his guitar a few times, had the rookery play to his singing and accompanied Jill. Danny had his backing band with him (I kid you not, if you weren't there to witness it that's your problem.). Andrew put some cracking songs in, he really has got a good repertoire. Goff not only sang a few good songs but demonstrated his virtuoso accompanying skills for others and I gave my baritone jobby a bit of a turn.

The audience included at least one impresario (Jonty) and a young lady who said she will sing for us next time. One thing that made me smile was for half an hour at the beginning of the night, the gaffer of the Belton venue popped in for a pint with his mates. The two whose huge laughter every two seconds drowns out his pub came to our other ruddy pub!

So, onwards and acrosswards.

Next week Belton. The rookery will still be at Whitby, so will Jim. They are both stewarding camp sites so I doubt they'll get 24 hour passes. I hope to get up there Sunday but sadly have to come back that night.

The rest of us will hopefully be there. BWM is now contracted to appear regardless because his post above puts the contract in writing.

Crowds are already beginning to mingle outside the stage door. Lots of security Hells Angels on loan from Mr Jagger & co are lining the route from Sandtoft International Airport and the media circus is well and truly in town in anticipation of the event.

One old lass a reporter accosted outside Epworth Co-op said "Those with tickets will be able to tell their grandchildren they were there, just like I was the one whipping my dugs out in the crowd on my boyfriend's shoulders at the original Woodstock."

It isn't too late to get a ticket. Either give the magic signal to one of the touts across in The Queens' or alternatively, beat a path through the young girls trying to throw their knickers at Danny as you run the gauntlet into The Red Lion and ask the bar staff to put one under for Musket. If you then buy the rookery a pint, you can watch from the stage wings.

So, here we go. Rookery and Backwoodsman being CTB and Goff not making an appearance apart, the rest of us had a bloody good night if you'll pardon my French.

The bar still had a few of the "been here since 4,00" crowd when we started so we started outside in the beer garden for the first hour, and apart from Albert complaining of hyperthermia, we enjoyed that bit. Then we went inside and here's something, I counted a real audience of about twenty, as in at our end of the bar, listening, cheering and clapping. Cracking night.

That couple Eric introduced with guitar and whistle and I asked their names to name check and thanks to having a sniff of the barmaids apron I've forgotten already. Bugger.

We had Jill, accompanied by Chris not Ian. We had Ian getting that bloke I just mentioned and yours truly playing for him whilst he sung. Reg and Gary. Mike. Albert. Chris. Eric. Richard. Jim. I brought up the rear.

Aye. Good fun. I left the pub around 1.00am as usual and on the walk back to Chez Musket remembered I had to be up at 6,00am. Must must must remember I don't sit on my arse all day any more.

You have no idea how tempted I was to sing "Travelling Light" in, as Vic Reeves would put it, the style of a working men's club. Close your eyes when I sing it and you are whisked back to Worksop Miners Welfare, waiting for bingo to start. Snag is, Chris sings it seriously. Same as with due deference to Albert, you never hear me start a song with "Take the ribbon from your fur"

Obviously I'm too young to have stuck flowers in my hair 😎 but unfortunately I was in a few punk bands in my time. 🎸🎶

Any road up. It seems that whilst we were in The Red Lion, the gaffer at The Wheatsheaf is now alternating us with an electric night. I can't be in two places at once but would love to give that new Washburn dot an outing. I reckon Lord Franklin with fuzz overdrive and feed some chorus through the wah pedal....

I'd need to get to grips with the brilliant but basically beyond me looper if I were to clear the bar with Famous Flower of Serving Men though..

For the record, I still managed to forget to bring the baritone jobby.

I can't remember Rookery's mate's name but he took me back a bit with a Hamish song, Ian's friend sang of how she wanted to be a punk rocker with flowers in her hair, which was ironic given most of the audience were burnt out hippies apart from Andrew and I being of a punk aware age.

So, as well as those two, and I apologise for forgetting their names, Ian showed us how to play and tune down at the same time, Backwoodsman had two capos on at the same time, I played dangerously showing how to be a cheapskate and put a normal capo over five strings without it landing in his drink, Chris showed off his new guitar (another Reiner but there again he did get a lift off the chief executive officer of Reiner guitars, who sang a few nice songs himself for that matter. Jim had his baritone banjo, nice sound (for a banjo you understand.). The rookery played good guitar, oh and also brought his banjo. Danny had a nice choice of songs, Andrew never ceases to amaze me with his repertoire and Goff treated us to a couple of new ones.

In years to come, rock stars will be telling Kerrang magazine that they were in the audience that night.

Yeah, last night wasn't bad at all. A bit of an audience, (of the type that borrowed a guitar and produced a tin whistle and we had a duo performing jigs & reels. Excellent. Not quite so many in the actual pub and they seemed to naturally drift to those listening at our end of the bar and those not at the other. About as good as The Wheatsheaf has been to date.

I didn't waddle outside for the hard trek (300 yd) to Chez Musket till 1.00am. The gaffer and I were yakking on the subject of "all our ruddy yesterdays" over a whisky or three. We have a shared history of staple bunkers (!)

By the way John, we may have competition for you if you, as you wrongly say, play wrong notes loudly... I don't think you do, and to be honest, I was only lamenting with others a couple of weeks ago that it was about time we heard your tunes again. You always pleasantly surprise me with tunes I don't know, and after donkeys years in a ceilidh band, I thought I knew them all....

Yeah, I want to see it too. I feel that out of the box, set up nicely, it is a brilliant guitar. It can be argued it might be peaking almost from new whilst the guitar it is based on can only mellow and mellow with time. But having played around with one at Richtone in Sheffield a few months ago, I almost bought one for taking to festivals etc. (I ended up with an Eastman but the half price deal rather than straight comparison did it for me.)

Here, we can do a blind test vs your '28. 😈

First of all, carrying on the debate over The Wheatsheaf. Had a report or two (Goff & Jim) last night as well as a yak with the gaffer at the pub the other day.

Nobody officially runs the club as such but as the rookery and I, together with squeezebox John have our signatures on the numbered Swiss bank account Eric bequeathed us, (got about £60 in it) we feel somewhat responsible and so sorry to those who turned out and thank you for doing so. It is holiday time and some clubs are a bit thin on the ground so a fledgling such as The Wheatsheaf is a bit bumpy.

The rookery and I will be there next week and play it by ear. We all know the pub has recently reopened and Mark, the gaffer there genuinely thought Wednesday nights would be otherwise dead. That they are not so is great for him and the pub but may force a replan by us.

Red Lion last night...

They gave us a function room so it were grand. Can't guarantee it every time but much appreciated. In fact, two couples wandered in to listen and, I kid you not, dance when Chris or Eric played to the crowd with some rock n roll. Mudcat's thumb strummer can be added to the list of audience as he preferred to listen than play. Fair do's but as the late John Wells of Kiveton used to say, it ain't no spectator sport!

As well as the rookery (turned up late!) and yours truly, we had contributions from Eric, Mike, Albert, Trevor. Goff, Danny, Chris, Ian and Andy.

Not a bad turnout. Some cracking music and the beer is ok, except for those of us with chariots and horses being stabled during our activities.

Anything to add Rookery? Yes, your banjo next to me and Jim's banjo also next to me in some unholy harmony.... But anything constructive to add?

Musket, I was there last week, and it was grim.

About 60 geriatric ex-Mods on Lambrettas and Vespas, revving their farty little engines up outside. A dozen or so bar-flies seemingly engaged in competitions to see (a) who had the most severely damaged hearing, and (b) who could shout the loudest so that their deaf mates could hear them and shout back.

There were only four of 'us' - Goff (not a 'shouter' by any stretch of the imagination), the guy from Scunny (I think) with the banjo and ukulele, the quiet blonde lady with the Taylor GS Mini, and me - and it was genuinely impossible to hear even your own voice when you were singing! We fought manfully against adversity, but surrendered at 10pm and buggered off home.

I'm all for 'taking the music to the people', but it requires a decent number taking it to them, and a willingness on the part of those people to whom it's taken to receive it! Neither were in evidence last Wednesday!

I wain't be there tonight or next week at the Wheatsheaf, but I'm hoping to get to the Red Lion next time. Have a good 'un toneet!

Back from happy hols. Suitcase full of sticks of rock to see me through to the next pit summer shutdown.

So.. The rookery and I popped into The Wheatsheaf yesterday for a slurp, as one does. Not many managed to make it last week, it seems. As neither of us managed it, I'll keep my trap shut but it does go to show I was right.

They only turn up to hear the rookery's banjo after all. Who'd have thought it eh?

Tonight! Red Lion! Be there or at the very least give us a mental image of a doggy with a bandage on his paw to stir sympathy and forgiveness for not turning out.

As ever, free beer, lots of Collings and Northwood guitars in the raffle and complimentary stretch limos from Sandtoft International Airport for anyone fancying a night in Epworth.

The door code as ever is "and one under the bar for Ian and John please Landlord."

And what a brilliant night we had! Even with the absence of Musket, and Tricia, and the late arrival of Ian, then Albert and Chris, the room was full, the atmosphere was excellent, the crowd were appreciative and the music was.........enjoyable! Gary and Reg came again, and Trevor is becoming a regular visitor from Tickhill, and all the other usual suspects were there strutting their stuff. Thanks to everybody! It looks like we have found a good venue!

Interesting thing. The first time I was in the Canadian Rockies, I was told to wear a bell on my rucksack as the bears hear it and keep clear. A few years later, the advice had changed on account of a sneaking suspicion the bears related the sound of bells to food....

Well that's a turn up for the book! I get the chance to follow up the club night before Musket does! It's probably because he's so excited about his upcoming Dorset holiday that he can't think. Or maybe he was so drunk he can't remember..... Well since I was on the water for much of the night, I can say that it was another good'un. About 10 of us made the effort and we were pleased that Danny finally got his passport and was able to join us and Colin brought Pip to add a melodic voice to his guitaring. The crowd were again noisy and supportive, though not always at the same time, nevertheless it works well at the Wheatsheaf. I was pleased to discover that a banjo a guitar and a box of goodies will fit into my MX5 boot but the uke had to sit on the seat.
Next week Jan 8th, it's back to Epworth to the Red Lion. See you there if you can make it.

Hopefully Danny or Andy will be in and I shall ask them about Yvonne. Most of us nowadays are either relative teenagers or, in the case of some, occasional over the years.

In deference to the memory of Eric, it'll always be Ep'th Folk, regardless of location or content. The rookery and I will have to get down to Gainsbro' soon. One or two old mates from years ago have been known to lurk in your neck of the woods, and I recall you turning up for Eric's 80th, which was nice. You are always welcome. The music is cosmopolitan (he says, not wanting Jim Carroll to turn this into a 1954 thread,) and the nights are real good fun.

If I play it in Dmaj, that is the general chord list ish for let it grow. With many songs, you either start (allowing for anacrucists*) on chord 1 or end on it as BWM says but cadences* can be funny things. Mind you, like most bluesy songs, transposing it to E gives some creamy chord progressions. But the chords used in D work well too.

If you try singing the song with just gently strumming one chord, representing the key chord (chord 1) that you think it is in, if it sounds ok ish, you should be there... I reckon it is D, especially as you state it is transposed lower. God plays in E. Period.

Alternatively, ask the rookery to accompany you with a gob iron... I would say accompany you with his banjo, but then you would be in Gmaj (ish) anyway.....

I normally try to dig out and relearn a new song every time for Ep'th folk, but what with buggering about with the baritone and now the lucille (you might guess what I bought then) I seem to have forgotten to dig out songs...

The rookery now has surplus stock of Northwood guitars so expect one in the raffle. The gaffer has Batemans on and Albert is in my good books for sorting out my banjo (don't tell the rookery it is working again) and my old punk axe, a Yamaha GSX that hold a place in my heart and invariably in my youngest's collection. Grrr. (He ain't having the bugger, that's final.)

It's a song called Canada Blues, no not really, I'm only joking.
It's Let It Grow by Eric Clapton transposed a full step lower.
That's the first half of the verse which is repeated and then finishes on a couple of bars of A.
The chorus includes A, Amaj7, D, G, and finishes on E7 before going back to the next verse, so I suppose that's in the key of D.
The C I play in the verse should be Am/G but I think the C sounds better. I just like to know what key I'm playing a song in and this one has always perplexed me.

Usually (but not always) the first chord of the first line of the song will give you the key, often the closing chord of the verse. But the chords you've quoted could be in C, or G, or D or.......

So anyway...

Our final ever night (only been four, or was it three?) at this location. Commiserations to Chris as it is walking distance for him.

The venue isn't quite as quiet on a Wednesday as the gaffer said and the darts room is a bit small and cosy when the thousands of groupies and punters descend on it.

Our final night was a cracker though. Reg and Gary turned up and displayed their popular double act. Mike ragged those blues man. Richard was on form. Chris brought his Hofner (I'm green to the gills with envy.). Albert reminds me a decent seam bowler. Line and length, every delivery consistent. The rookery brought his pretend Martin and it didn't sound bad for a copy. The other Ian nicked my new toy (baritone guitar) and wowed us. A newcomer by the name of Colin sang some lovely songs, including one of my favourites and I brought up the rear.

Next week Wheatsheaf at Belton. Then alternating with The Red Lion at Epworth. Although for the first one there, I've managed to forge one of Backwoodsman's leave passes and will be playing with my bucket and spade.

Lake Louise is always frozen over when I go there. (Skiing, why else would you go there???)

On the road leading to the chateau is a hotel called Deer Lodge. Best food in Alberta by my reckoning. We used to stay there but these days stay in Banff when in the area.

The Irish pub in Banff may have recovered by now from a session I did for them when the booked singer felt unwell during his first set. (We only popped in for a pint...). If you get there during the day, they do a nachos with all the goo but the crisps are home made from spuds. Bloody good stuff!

Anyway..

For we earthbound bods. William at Haxey, Wednesday night. No excuses, and BWM only got a pass because he asked nicely.

Lots of other good music in various venues, including some by club regulars during the day, caught a fiddle session in The White Bear, a Morris team were banging out tunes in The Red Lion before us, I heard a ceilidh band outside The Mechanics Institute Library, the Haxey Hand Bell Ringers were on form and we caught up with them in various places, oh and Mrs Musket and her mates rang the church bells (Steadman if you are interested) to mark the beginning of the festival.

The rookery fed and looked after yours truly, and we might have, with The Red Lion, found another venue to use, this time actually in Epworth!

Watch this space (and yes, the folk club did used to meet there many yonks of yore ago.)

I fully concur with Muskets analysis of last nights proceedings! It was probably the best club night in recent memory. Paul Pearson and Christine from Sheffield and Eric, Phil, Bob and Tricia from a little closer to home gave it an extra something, and the crowd was largely friendly, quietish and supportive. As Musket was saying, the second prize in the Banjo raffle is of course a Baritone guitar!

Lots, usually.

Brilliant night. Standing room only. I counted about a dozen performers, some of whom were playing with our usual suspects for the first time. Decent sized audience listening and applauding from the bar area too.

The reminder about Sandtoft International Airport certainly worked. A great singer / guitarist called Paul caught the red eye from Sheffield just to join us. Cosmopolitan and international appeal or what?

Good array of singers. The rookery might, if we are lucky, give a name check of those joining us for the first time, as he was master of ceremonies and kept a mental record of everybody's name. Highlights for me included a welcome return for Bob Chiswick, Eric and his mate giving us a double act and talking of double acts, Chris was accompanied by his better half harmonising vocals and splendid with it too!

Despite the eventual appearance of a banjo, I have to say the rookery was on sparkling form too. I reckon soft drinks aids his performance and when he and I tour the local clubs, volunteering to drive every time might be the career boost he seeks.

The gaffer was well chuffed with the bar takings and I vaguely recall about 12.30am convincing him that sticking the pool table in the beer garden and us taking over the pub would increase barrelage further. Nice try Musket me old lad.

Any road.

Don't forget. Singaround session as part of Epworth Music Day. This Saturday at 2.00pm at The Red Lion on Market Place. Lots and lots of live music all around the town centre from 10.00am till officially 10.00pm. Going to be grand.

Next Wednesday. The William at Haxey. Fingers crossed we might have a banjo in the raffle. Make sure you get the winning ticket. That gets a box of choccies. The losing ticket however....

However, as you asked nicely.

I have bought an Alvarez ABT60e. It is a baritone guitar, and is presently tuned BEADF#B. Although I may bugger about with that as it sounds best when slow picked, which suits modal tunings.

It ain't half a big heavy sod mind.. The thick bass strings are giving my fingers the sort of callouses I haven't had for years.

But.

I like singing deep and it puts a different perspective on some of my songs. Yeah, chuffed to bits.

I have not added to my collection though, I part exchanged a Yamaha APX4-12 that I have had since the early '90s and once I stopped playing in bands, hardly ever touched it.

Albert was surrounded by his guitars including one for sale from a sadly deceased guitarist. Chris was on great form. The rookery supplied the audience as well as good music. "Young" Ian (as opposed to Iain Young) gave us a few good songs, Graham had a nice choice of lovely songs, Mike played some cool blues and yours truly was loud apparently.

All to play for at The Wheatsheaf next week.

I bought a new guitar today.

It's only mahogany tops I am not impressed by! The backs and sides are fine! I didn't know the new Sigmas were from a different factory- though I think I heard some of the originals were made at the Tokai Gakki factory. I won't rise to the banjo quip! As they say -you can't educate pork!

The "new" Sigma company use an OEM factory in China, and whilst you take guitar chat sites sometimes with a pinch of salt, it is said they use the same firm that Gibson use for some of the Epiphone range.

The Rookery knows I am somewhat impressed by recent Sigma models and their D28 equiv' not only looks the part but sounds similar to a new Martin. Rich Tone in Sheffield sell plenty of both so you can sit side by side, as indeed you can with a smaller collection in Gear4Music in York.

But ten, twenty years down the line? The Martin should in theory be sounding sweeter than when new whilst the plywood backed Sigma will have peaked a while ago as the solid top opened up. It is the long term investment that makes the Martin in my book. Badge envy doesn't really come into it. Iain had his Collings at a night in Doncaster the other month, and a singer songwriter with a Fylde, so knows his guitars, who has been on the circuit for forty years said he only realised Collings were a decent guitar and not a cheap Chinese copy the previous week. Perfection is sometimes discreet.

Everybody knows a Martin and in the same way that in the '70s, companies needing early computers had a saying "you'll never be fired for buying big blue (IBM)" a similar thing applies to Martin. You know what you are getting.

Backwoodsman has yet to be fully impressed by Taylor, I try but can't get on with Gibson. The rookery doesn't go for mahogany in any guitar. Banjo players don't go for tuning up.

It's life.

(I did try a new Gibson J15, not only the cheapest but I had been told would be more to my liking than the other J series. It was, but not to the point of considering buying it, yet I reckon those who fall in love with it will do so for all the right reasons.)

I left my Turner guitar for Julie at The Wheatsheaf yesterday, though she wasn't there. At least it encourages her to start playing and hopefully swell our numbers! The crowd in there did seem a friendly bunch so let's see how it goes ! My weight might come down if I have to start driving every week, thus significantly cutting my beer intake. My playing might improve too!

Yes! A German company, AMI, took the brand name over in 2007. The guitars were built in Korea, not certain if they still are, but it could well be.

I agree, they're very nice guitars. I've had a OOOMC15E for about 3 years and I love it. Am I right in thinking it's a Germany company who bought the Sigma name. I don't really know why my mate wants to sell his DM15 but then again he changes his guitars more often than I change my socks. When I started learning guitar about 5 years ago he let me have his Taylor Big Baby for a reasonable price, nice low action and a very comfortable shape, I think I wouldn't have persevered but for that guitar so I'm indebted to him for his fickleness.

Anyone wanting a very reasonably-priced Asian-built guitar could do far worse than a Sigma - nice guitars, very playable, decent sound. (Incidentally, they aren't the same 'Sigma' that used to be associated with CF Martin - completely different company). 👍

A friend of mine has a Sigma DM15 that he wants to sell, it's in immaculate condition and has a lovely low action.
He's looking for about £150 but I'm sure we can get him down to £130.
Just out of curiousity how many guitars have you got in your collection? does it rival the Rookery's 8.

Err. Faster than I care for. I'm already semi retired.... Been buying guitars recently too 😳

I reckon two more will complete the collection. A baritone, and the very reasonably priced Alvarez is in my sights after playing one recently. The other? Err.. Martin 00 or OM of whatever model. (I was rather taken by a mahogany one at half the price of a 28 last week when I popped up to York to buy an active wedge speaker for my pa. There again, the £200 Sigma equivalent was a bloody good guitar, and not just "for the money."

If I do let my old Jim Harley dreadnought go, then ok, the Martin will more than likely be a HD 28 or 35. But since doing it up and subsequently playing with the action, tusq saddle, heavy pins (that debate again) etc I reckon on its day it is the most balanced guitar I own. The cedar top gives it a quiet mellow sound but a good one. Albert reckoned it sounded nicer than a D 28 I followed at Tickhill the other week 😮

Nah, can't be arsed with fighting nowadays - getting too old for handbags at twenty paces. And instrument choice is precisely that - a choice for each individual to make according to his/her ears and hands - certainly nothing to start scrapping over.

The Taylor was, in fact, rather nice to play (although the string-spacing was different to what I'm used to and caught me out a couple of times). Not quite the sound to satisfy my ears, but I'm happy to concede to those who like the 'Taylor Sound'. I'll stick with Lowden and Martin though.

And the only carbon-fibre in my future might be a Hoffee case for the Lowden, if I can scrape up the shekels!

And you'll be surprised how fast the years will pass, Musket me lad! :-)

It was indeed a nice evening. Even the buzzing of the bar-flies didn't detract too much from the ambience, looking forward to the next one (although it will be at least mid-July befor I make it again. Have good uns in the meantime.

Both Martin and Taylor are making half plywood half polymer and sawdust guitars now. Makes my graphite axe almost natural.

In the bar before you all turned up, a bloke asked me what types of people turn up to "these dos." I said that men of a certain age, finding their financial positions are somewhat different to the past look back at what they couldn't have when they had hair and acne. Some buy Ducatis or Harleys, some buy Martins or Taylors.

I must start planning for thirty years time eh? 😎

I forgive the minor criticism by Backwoodsman of the fine Taylor guitar, on the grounds that from the rear he couldn't quite appreciate the wonderful sound it made in our direction when he played it. Of course the noise he gets from the Irish plank was also fairly good but I hear on the grapevine that they are a bit like an Alfa Romeo or MotoGuzzi- i.e. a lovely sound but a bit unreliable and need regular and expensive maintenance! ;-)

Keep the noise down Rookery! Some of us didn't leave till 1.15am... The gaffer said "you'll join me in a whiskey." It wasn't a question. Iain and I were chewing the fat with the gaffer till all hours.

Get this. The lads stood near us at the bar asked to borrow my guitar after you all left and two of them are decent players and half promised to join in next time.

A good night. The rookery decided a banjo can be heard better and it was (I heard it from the gents) Backwoodsman's Irish plank showed us her new clothes and they fitted her nicely, Iain brought his guitar made from an airing rack, I think that's what he said, Albert sees new venues as marketing opportunities so was wearing his Reiner T shirt and his Reiner guitar, Chris broke a string on his Reiner guitar which sort of spoilt the effect, and Albert's condemnation of Martin strings got the expected reaction from the Martin fan club, the Rookery's Uncke Brian didn't need a guitar to be on cracking form and yours truly noted that the first Ferraris had wooden chassis but now? Nice to take my lump of carbon fibre for an airing amongst the ex rain forest on view last night.

The gaffer's missus borrowed my guitar and it looks like the gaffer may have to buy her one. She played at school and seems keen to reacquaint herself. A lady from the bar area came over and sang a lovely song too, as I recall.

Yeah. Decent night. As the rookery noted, a bit close to home for yours truly so I have a bout of liquor mortis right now. But it was worth it really.

Onwards and downwards. Haxey next week!!!

There is a stewards enquiry regarding the raffle. I'm sure the gaffer's missus won the Taylor guitar?

Unusually, I seem to be the first to comment on last nights club meeting at the Wheatsheaf. Probably because musket lives 200yards away and may well still be there.
We had an excellent night despite a little noise from the bar, and it seems sensible to persevere and try to meet every week for the moment- one night at the Wheatsheaf and the alternate Wednesday at the Duke William in Haxey. We all had to play a little louder than normal, and it seemed to work. We managed 8 active members, and a couple of reluctant shy types who came without guitars but full of promises for next time! See you all on 10th at the Duke William. By the way- I won all the prizes in the lottery. Those are lovely guitars!

I've just checked the telly listings and they are nothing compared to The Rookery's banjo. The pub has been refurbished sans carpet and has plaster walls and slate floor tiles so even if you do stay in watching telly, you still might hear his banjo.. If Jim turns up as well, it'll be memories of the house across the road moaning about the ill fated rock festival they had a couple of years ago.

Ignore the ticket touts. You can get in by "putting a Theakstons behind the bar" for Musket or a John Smiths Cask in a similar manner for the rookery.

As a special raffle prize, we have a Northwood 00 sized guitar. Best thing to come out of Canada since beaver skin hats. Second prize is the Collings imitation of Backwoodsman's Martin and third prize is oh, another Northwood.

The rookery and I have just enjoyed a swift half at the venue.

The need to restore Ep'th folk is a big need but venues such as this and Haxey not only fill in the gaps but could make alternative weeks venues.

Any road. Theakstons on tap and John Smith Cask for those brought up within the confines of the metropolitan borough of Rotherham. The coffee machine is brand new.

So.. The Wheatsheaf, Westgate, Belton, DN9. Tomorrow Wednesday 3 June. 8.30pm. The chance to buy 1/3 of a Musket a 1/3 if a gallon of beer and to hear how Backwoodsman's Lowden sounds since its holidays in Northern Ireland.

Other acts signalling their inclusion include The Rookery, Albert, Chris, Matthew, Martin Carthy, Vin Garbutt and Show of Hands. We are still negotiating contracts with Danny, Goff, Iain and Richard Thompson.

A bit of an experiment to be fair. We are taking advantage of the squared horse shoe layout of the pub so in theory it should be quiet for us. That said, the pub has only just reopened after being shut for eighteen months and the gaffer doesn't really know his patterns of trade yet.

It isn't the first tine music nights or even open mic nights have worked for a time there, and living just up the road, I can see certain advantages a la Musket's "in the zone" for playing.

So any road.. We went to Haxey.

Whilst we didn't use the main bar, a small but comfy room (sans door) where the darts are played provided a nice arena for a few of us. A few more in and we'd have been buggered.

In short, whilst the pub is normally fairly empty on a Wednesday the motel had a load of lads up for a few days fishing & drinking so it was a wee bit noisy. The gaffer reckoned it was a one off so we wil be back in two weeks time.

So.. Mike kicked off with some good blues. Matthew made a welcome return with some of his own songs and a rather good Spancil Hill, together with a Stranglers cover. Chris brought the family over to make up numbers and gave us a couple of songs before having to go. (If I took my missus out for birthday meal and "happened" to end up at a folk club, I know the reaction I'd get..). Albert was on form and his new guitar (router special as it is referred to by those in the know) was left curled up with a Horlicks whilst he brought the one I like best from his sales stock, but don't tell him. The Rookery brought his new bridge pins, presently attacked to a rather good sounding Yamaha, and ignored it to play a uke all night. Talking of ukes, Jim drowned out the laughing domino rattling juke box feeding telly watching fishermen next door with his powerful melodic voice and yours truly brought up the rear, nicking other people's guitars despite one at my side and another in the car.

Yeah. Inauspicious start but who knows? When we get the Mowbray back, if we do, we might look at alternating Wednesdays. An Isle club as it were...

Any road. The rookery has failed re reporting last week so I might as well recall.*

A night for quality rather than quantity. A few regulars on holiday or CTB. The rookery was in fine form, Richard is expanding his style of playing to great effect, Mike escaped bridge two sessions running and gave a masterclass in blues guitar, noting the 100 years since the birth of Robert Johnson and finished off with an excellent Rev Gary Davis number. "Young" Ian (as opposed to yours truly the teenage Ian) came back after his debut last time and gave us a couple of songs that took us back a bit. Danny was his evergreen self. A bloke whose name I forget (😳) gave us a couple of nice songs with his new guitar. He has been a couple of times so it isn't good enough I forget his name, sorry. Jim brought his banjo out and led us in some excellent jamming and yours truly remembered for once to do a MacColl number for his 100th birth year and otherwise made everyone put up with musical Mills and Boon.

There. Didn't hurt.

The Martin copy guitar is back in the raffle after I returned it as an unwanted gift, and we know a bloke who can remove the Collings sticker off the headstock and replace it with one that looks like Martin**

Reading the rookery' comment, it occurs to me that Mudcat doesn't ever seem to debate what is proper folk? Odd, that. Being a folk forum...

A grand night was had by all concerned. Ian Laird made his long overdue debut as an acoustic guitarist, with a well written and played song explaining why he had eventually been forced to come, (by Richard and Me!) Mike made an escape from Bridge and played some great blues, Musket and Backwoodsman gave us some proper folk and Goff, Albert, Chris, Richard and Me did what we do with much joviality, enthusiasm, guitar chat and beer! Nice nice nice!

Anyway, I can confirm the build quality is OK. It took a padsaw, mallet and large drill to get the bugger apart. All that just to see what pre war scalloping looks like eh?

Once I get it glued together again, I will be able to comment on the playability....

I also thought it was a chance last night for Musket to see what a proper guitar is like to play- in my old job it was called a demo, and often led to a sale as the quality of the instrument becomes apparent through use!
It'll be good for the guitar to be thrashed a bit as my playing is far too delicate to get the best out of it! (Joke)

It seems my sober and considered reportage on the Ep'th Folk Club activities, is being usurped by Musket's enthusiastic and knowledgeable commentary! I rather think the difference in style is due to his modest intake of alcohol, and my walkingdistancefromtheMowbray 4 or 5 pints. This means he can remember details of what went on where I just remember a rather blurry evening of joviality, conviviality, repartee and enjoyable music. Brilliant!

Well, I don't know about you, but I reckon the beach volleyball team should go all the way...

Wonderful night. Turned into a bit of a session towards the end, thanks in no small way to Jim's powerful voice and dropping hints by shouting what key (he thought) his uke was in. Goff floated between John Connoly and trad via Guns n Roses, Danny picked out some good songs, Chris included one he penned himself, the rookery dug out some fine classics, Andrew carried on with his nack of singing songs you remember being played in folk clubs over the years, to fine effect. Albert counted four guitars and a uke he built being used in the room whilst providing vocals for Chris at one point and yours truly dug a few out of the archives.

Awful lot of digging going on.. We arranged our input to the Epworth Music Day in June. (Sat outside the Mowbray all afternoon singing and playing. Sat inside The Mowbray all night singing and playing. Took some working out, I'll tell you..)

Oh, I won the raffle. But when I got it home it wasn't the Taylor I bought a ticket for. Turned out to be a Martin copy, Collings or some such name. Tsk.

Only twelve hours to go! Helplines are being set up for those two cannot contain their excitement and the beach volleyball players are limbering up.

Everything you ever needed from a folk club from Musket sticking his finger in his ear to Andrew performing an Ed Sheeran cover via the rookery banging out trad on his banjo. All folky points in between by our increasing number of regular and not so regular troubadours. If you haven't got a guitar, no problem. We have a bloke who can make you one and another liable to sell you one.

Mowbray Arms, Ep'th. 8.30pm.

The secret code to get into the club room is to go to the bar and order an extra pint, saying it's for Ian.

LOL! John finds it quite amusing that 'Fiddler's Green' is often claimed as a 'Traditional Irish' song! He certainly doesn't seem to lose any sleep over its mis-accreditation.

It's the broad inclusiveness of Ep'th Folk that I enjoy so much - long may it be so! 👍

A rather good night. A bit thin on the ground, but songs from Goff, Danny, Richard, The Rookery's Uncle Brian, Albert, the rookery and yours truly.

There are many musical styles and formats in folk and we heard quite a few of them from Geordie unaccompanied traditional ballads to Americana. As ever, Epworth delivers in providing good folk music with varying styles and I look forward to my fortnightly fix. It's a breath of fresh air in more ways than one.

The rookery suggested an Irish theme some time. (We went to Wath last month and Dennis the Elder does themes.) Other than digging a hole in the car park, not sure what I'd do but my mates are a versatile bunch....

To get to EP'TH FOLK CLUB:

Drive to the traffic lights at Epworth, there you will find the
White Bear pub. With the pub car park on your right go down Station
Road, away from the town centre for a few hundred yards until you come to a left fork in the road. Take this and you will find the
OLD SCHOOL INN on your right a few yards down BATTLE GREEN.

That is where we are.
