LOL, Susan, and thank you, Amos & everybody. Reading this thread, I see so many familiar names that I can connect now with familiar faces, thanks to all you people traveling long distances to come to the Getaway. What a nice feeling.

Max, here's another thank-you from me for all you've done to create and perpetuate the Mudcat. Sure adds a lot to life.

Our son, Darriel, has always thought of the people in the Folklore Society of Greater Washington as his extended family. Now the family is being extended even more. People like Sinsull, Tinker, Mick, Mmario, Barry, Jeri, Janie, Kendall, Dani, WYSIWYG, so many others feel like -- no, they are -- old friends by now.

Bill will no doubt tease me for gushing again. Oh well, I'm (half) Italian, what does he expect? Bill's own background is mostly Scottish; whether that's relevant or not, he does tend to be somewhat more restrained in his mode of expression. :-)

It's just plain lovely to have the both of you grace us with your presence. May this coming year bring you all you desire and need. Thanks a bunch!

"It makes me think of the good ol' days--
Happy Birthday to you!!
You sure grew out of your baby ways--
Happy Birthday to you!!!!
It's Rita's birthday; we wish her MANY more--
Health, and wealth, and friends by the score(or friends-even more?)
Tune up a banjo, let's sing lots more--
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!"

Of course, no one will confuse Bill's "reserve" with shyness. How fortunate Rita found support for her warmth and kindness with someone who simply has another mode of expressing his. So many ways for unity to manifest itself.
While we all wish you well, Rita darlin', it's really ourselves we're helping. We recognize how much better our lives are for your presence in them.
More cake here--and something bubbly to wash it down with.    Tw

Hi y'all! What a lovely thread.

(I just typed "friend" instead of "thread," then had to change it. Freudian slip of the finest kind, huh?)

It's so funny. I often think in phrases like "Hi, y'all" but don't say them. Am just beginning to realize it. That is how I greeted people when I was a kid, before the other kids' teasing cured me of talking the way my mom and her family talked....

I've figured out that one reason I love singing Appalachian songs is that I don't have to struggle to get rid of all the diphthongs and southern pronunciation that I hear in my head. For example, I was singing "Rose of Allendale" and suddenly realized how much work it is to sing "distant lannndddss" instead of "distant lay-yunds." But in an Appalachian song it actually sounds better if I sing "lay-yunds."

A wee bit of thread creep there. Sorry....

I must say, I do think it's nice that people are still posting to my birthday thread. I'm sitting here with a big grin.

Well some of the grin is because Bill and I survived another craft show this weekend and came home with a bit more money than we started with :-).

We had to set up our booth early Saturday morning, I think we got to the place at 6:30 am.

In preparation we spent Friday, my actual birthday, doing all the last minute things one does. Well, I spent it that way. Bill got all his stuff done and the van loaded by about noon, then sat and posted to Mudcat and tried not to mind that I was still racing around with stuff unfinished.

In the meantime I tried to get everything packed, which required me to finish varnishing all the necklaces and boxes I had stayed up to paint Thursday night until an hour I will not reveal; then wait until the varnish dried, add the prices and care instructions, put cords on necklaces, put them in pretty gold boxes, then check my list one more time and figure out what still wasn't done, et more cetera. Oh, and some time about 1 am Saturday I checked the list and realized I hadn't printed any of the business cards that go with the necklaces. So I printed them.

So that is mostly how I spent my birthday. But there were very pleasant intervals in there for birthday stuff.

There were phone calls from Judy Cook and Susan Hills and Lorraine Van Buren (lots of you know them, they all were at the Getaway, & Judy & Lorraine are Mudcat members as well). I had happy birthday sung to me over the phone by both Judy and Lorraine; Susan phoned even though she had such a bad cold she could barely whisper.

Lorraine and husband George offered to bring over a birthday dinner or at least some ice cream if Bill and I were too busy to go out. (A party was absolutely out of the question, as Bill had already explained to me very slowly and carefully.) I thought I was pretty much on schedule, and wanted to go out for Chinese at a nice restaurant, which we did, and had a very good time. Came back and I showed them my latest craft work, (which still wasn't packed of course), then George gave me a long back rub before they left. It was a great back rub, and left me feeling better than a couple hours of sleep would have done, which is a good thing as it turned out.

As usual I had underestimated how much still had to be done and overestimated how fast I could do it, so ended staying up late again. Very late. Again.

And that my dears is how I spent my birthday.

I was practically a zombie at the show yesterday, somewhat better today. There were some fine moments. One was when a woman told us she only comes to this show to see Bill's woodworking. (She bought three pieces.) Another was when a woman paid me $65 for a SMALL (2 x 2 x4 inch) box with a fine picture of a wolf woodburned on it. The most I'd ever gotten for a box that size, up until this fall, was $35 -- but my work is getting better. I sold a similar wolf (not as good) for $48 in September.

Pricing my work has become more difficult as the work has gotten better. I know I want to ask more, but I also know that higher priced work doesn't sell easily at the shows I go to. The question of how much to price that little wolf had been driving me nuts, and I had already raised it twice.

Should have asked for more. That wolf looked as if it was aware that you were looking back at it. Neatest thing I've done in a long while; maybe the neatest box I've ever woodburned.

But I learned something. From now on I will not price my best work "to sell." I will price the best things according to how much money I REALLY want for them (in my dreams). Enough not to mind having them leave.

So I figure that wolf is going to earn me a LOT of money over the coming months.

I've already started. Today I raised the price on a good sized plaque by $75, to $450 -- and had a serious nibble at that price.

Anyway, even though I wish I'd asked more for it, the lady who bought the little box loved that wolf. She really appreciated what I had put into it. That is a gift too.

Well, dear people, I have indulged myself totally in writing this post. I have written to you as if we were on the phone catching up on each other's lives. Except that I got to do all the talking.... Well, you did ask! And that's what friends do, anyway.

So now you have heard my story of "How I spent my birthday, and the day after, too." We're pretty happy with how the weekend went and looking forward to Thanksgiving and the next show.

Rita

Mick and Peace, you didn't miss the thread, you just got here and sent me birthday greetings a wee bit late. Which is entirely appropriate considering how often I've done the same (I used to be a connoiseur of sorry-I-missed-your-birthday cards, now I just make phone calls when I remember...) and how often I'm a wee bit late for things.

Guess it just shows you're my kinda people. Oh but wait, Bill is almost NEVER late for stuff (and hates for other people ... including his wife ... to be late or to make him late to things) and he's my kinda people too.

I'm just happy to get so many nice birthday greetings early, late, or whatever.

Love,
Rita

So... does this mean that as long as people keep wandering in and finding this thread, the birthday celebration shall be caused to continue? Cuz hey Rita-- how long do you want to keep partying? We can always refresh the thread..... guidance please? :~)

I know I'm still celebrating, so it's only right you get to as well! :~)

I could always re-theme the Spring Gathering as "Rita's Birthday Bash" ya know... :~)
