G'day Ray,

Obviously, since the words in Martin Page's book are already songs, there are tunes to virtually all of them. I don't remember whether the tunes are identified in the text, but many people who particpated in the military adventures he covers would know the originals ... usually popular songs of the day ... "parodied" to deal with current realities ... or to provide humour to ameliorate it.

Keeping the original tunes is often important, with songs like this, because the connections with the original song were often part of the power / humour of the 'parody' / new song.

Regards,

Bob

I have the book somewhere-I'm not parting with it- but if you want the headings for any particular songs, just PM me. The tunes, as Bob says, were well-known ditties, identified in the headings. Usually, that is, but not 'Fucking Tobruk/Halkirk'

Well thanks for your attention

I had the book some years ago and lent it to Keith Marsden ~ believe it or not

I put tunes to one which started ~ Far across the ocean lies a land so fair and sweet, rugged hills and valleys with their house small and neat etc (Our Country)

And 'They taught him how to use a knife and kill without a sound to climb a cliff to swim a stream and burrow in the dark, they taught him how to hate the foe withn all consuming rage until the animal in man burst forth from reasons cage' ~

Also one about a conscientious objector ~

As I say I dont have the book anymore and november brings thoughts of rememberance etc in Uk

The songs came back the other day when I was talking to fellow trad song collector Steve Gardham from Goole

If you know of any existing tunes which are online I would be interested to know

Many thanks
