Subject: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: GUEST,Billy Date: 20 Nov 05 - 11:38 PM I searched Mudcat for a thread that listed Folk Radio Programming and those that have web sites where you can stream the music. There were a lot of references in different threads but no central collection? If there is such a thread, can someone post it? Otherwise, I'll start you out with WNUR (Northwestern University Radio - Evanston, near Chicago, IL) who have been putting a lot of their "Folk Show" archives on the web (Streaming and Podcasts). There is a lot of good stuff; interviews, recordings and live studio performances. Their site is at http://www.wnur.org/folk/ (Maybe some kind soul can make a blue clicky thingy?) |
Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: Stephen L. Rich Date: 21 Nov 05 - 04:05 AM This should get you started. Hober Thinking Radio 24/7 folk wedcast. WFDU which broadcasts "Traditions" every Sunday night. WUMB 24/7 folk radio. They not only broadcast and webcast fine local programs, but they carry syndicated shows like "Blues Before Sunrise" and "The Midnight Special". WPR Which broadcats and webcasts a program called "Simply Folk" every Sunday night from 5:00pm to 8:00pm (CST) and follows that with the syndicated show "The Thistle and Shamrock". Folk Alley 24/7 folk webcast. This has a great diversity of folk music forms. Finally, WORT which from 9:00am to noon weekdays broadcasts and webcasts a variety of folk music programing. Mondays and Thursdays are World Music. Tuesdays brings "Pastures Of Plenty" all kinds of folk music with host John Fabke. Wednesday brings "Back to the Country" hosted by Grammy award winning Country Music historian Bill Malone (the Grammy was for liner notes). Friday WORT presents "The Mudacre Bluegrass Special" with host Chris Powers. You'll never guess what kind of music Chris plays.;-) That, as I said, should get you started. There's lots more out there. Stephen Lee |
Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: Mr Red Date: 21 Nov 05 - 01:07 PM cresby.com my (localised) lists - some of which have live and archive broadcast links(maybe MP3), including a link back to Mudcat threads - listing same kinda thing. But you have to do some of the work - PAL. |
Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: DebC Date: 21 Nov 05 - 01:16 PM We at Falling Mountain Music will begin podcasting in the next couple of weeks. We are still in the planning stages, but have got our first episode pretty well outlined. It will be a Christmas episode featuring some of the winter seasonal music that can be found on some of our artists' recordings. This will be an "audio magazine" that will include tracks from artist's recordings, portions of live radio interviews, spoken word essays and other neat audio items. We hope to produce one a month and possibly as we get into the swing of things, bi-monthly episodes. I'll keep you all posted. Deb Cowan |

Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: Chris Amos Date: 23 Nov 05 - 01:32 AM There is The Acoustic Stage, always worth a mention if we are going over this again, site here Chris |
Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: Bill D Date: 23 Nov 05 - 09:46 AM as always, I refer everyone to The Obsolete Music Hour, AKA The Dick Spottswood Show, on WAMU. You can listen live on Sunday, or listen to the archived show all week before a new one is put up. You may hear anything from Bluegrass to Old Timey to Hawaiian Slack Key to Italian Bagpipes...Dick is, to say the least, eclectic. His Christmas shows are always wonderful and fascinating. WAMU also does 24 hr a day Bluegrass and a Gospel show...as well as "Music Americana" |

Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: Bill D Date: 23 Nov 05 - 10:18 AM Davetnova....boy, they sure pack their links with ads! It is work to avoid web pages popping up with hotel ads, etc... I finally used the ASX (middle) link, which I play with Media Player Classic, avoiding the commercial stuff they bundle with the music. |
Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: Mo the caller Date: 23 Nov 05 - 11:15 AM From England 1hour of Mike Harding http://www/bbc/co/uk/radio2/r2music/folk/harding/ 2hours a week from scotland http:/www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/music/celticroots 3 hours from Wales http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/radiowales/shows/celticheartbeat.shtml Or just go to www.bbc.co.uk and navigate to folk (via radio probably) |
Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: Bard Judith Date: 23 Nov 05 - 12:38 PM Just discovered LAST.FM which promises a personalized music experience (using some experiential software which listens along with me, apparently, to discover my tastes and about after a week or so to provide my 'own' radio station...). So far their categorization of 'folk' is a lot broader than mine, but hey, that's how you stretch your preferences, right? The folk forum is here - see what you think! |
Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: Mike Regenstreif Date: 24 Nov 05 - 04:36 PM I host a weekly program called Folk Roots/Folk Branches, heard Thursday mornings from 9:00-11:00 on CKUT (90.3 FM) in Montreal. The show is also available as a streaming archive and as a downloadable MP3 'podcast' for two months after the original broadcast. For lots of info on the show, go to the Folk Roots/Folk Branches website. To directly access the live stream or archives, go to the Folk Roots/Folk Branches Listen page. Mike Regenstreif |

Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: Chris in Wheaton Date: 06 Dec 05 - 10:58 AM Really recommend Frank Henessy's Celtic Heartbeat on Radio Wales - this week a wonderful interview with the next great Welsh singing star - Meinir Gwilym - and if you listen, you can get in on the quiz to win a copy of her new cd. Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: danensis Date: 06 Dec 05 - 04:18 PM Folkwaves is on for two hours every Monday evening 7 while 9 on Radio Derby, and is broadcast on the web, unless its football, sports personality (an oxymoron surely) of the year, or anything else the BBC can dream up as a reason not to broadcast folk music. |
Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: GUEST,SteveP Date: 31 Dec 05 - 10:08 AM If you are surfing for something to listen to on New Year's Day, there is a 24 hour feast of English Folk on theacousticstage - www.theacousticstage.net |
Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: Stephen L. Rich Date: 01 Jan 06 - 12:55 AM One more bit. Music Made In Madison does a program called Whopatooli Mix from 7:00pm-8:00pm (CST) and 7:00am-8:00am daily. It's a combination of folk, roots, jazz, and country (basically anything that isn't rock). All of the artists are from, or work heavily in, Madison, WI (hence the title of the site). Who knows. You just might hear a certain "Friendly, Neighborhood, Yodeling Cowboy" while you're listening. Subject: RE: Folk Radio - Streaming and Podcasts From: Lizzie Cornish Date: 01 Jan 06 - 08:52 AM And then there's the fantastic Radio Britfolk which you can find out all about and listen to here: http://www.radiobritfolkhome.co.uk/HomePage.aspx Fantastic Idea!!! I'm hearing so much music I've never heard before and I love the fact they have so many different programmes every single week. I'm listening to the 'Forgotten Carols' one as I type this. Absolute magic! And the link for BBC Radio Derby's BESTEST programme 'Folkwaves' which is mentioned above, is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/derby/entertainment/music/features/folkwaves_programme_feature.shtml But you do have to 'Listen Live' to this at present as there is sadly no 'Listen Again' button....so e mail Radio Derby and demand one!!!! ;0) Mondays 7-9pm. It's grown into quite a 'cult' programme over on the Radio 2 F&A board..with people popping in over there every Monday evening to talk about the wide variety of great music they play. AND I found this accidentally whilst looking for something else...all about folk programmes on North West Radio: http://www.folkimages.com/RAD.htm
And finally for Billy, who started this thread, this is the link through to the radio programme he first mentioned: Hope they all work. Great to see so many folk programmes around! Happy New Year everyone
