Saw it yesterday, and it's a great movie. Very convincing performances by all concerned. Cash is beautifully portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, and June Carter is so well depicted by Reese Witherspoon that she ought to get an Academy Award for it.

There are also entertaining glimpses of the young Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, etc (by actors)....Cash was touring with a whole slew of famous musicians in the early days.

Phoenix plays and sings the Cash songs, and Witherspoon sings the June Carter songs too...very well in both cases.

Problem here is there are two other biopics where the accuracy and characters are better portrayed than even this and with actors a lot better than Phoenix. Phillip Seymour Hoffman doing Capote is damn near frightening and the Edward R. Murrow movie is beautifully done by David Strathairn. The Oscars will go to Cash and the other two won't get what is deserved.

Jesus Christ had a personal relationship with Dylan? I didn't know he was THAT old....

bobad - There is a little about that, although not an actual scene of them together. Cash refers respectfully to Dylan at least once, he's playing a song from "Highway 61 Revisited on his stereo in another scene, some Dylan photos are seen prominently on the wall in the record company office, and he and June do a spirited rendition of "It Ain't Me, Babe" in a concert scene. I'd say Bob's presence is felt in the movie, no doubt about that.

Spaw, you may well be right about the other biographical roles...I haven't seen them, so I have no basis for comparison there.

This is a very likeable movie. It ought to kindle much further interest in Johnny Cash's songs and his career.

What is the name of this movie?

Guest, a lot of people have had personal relationships with Jesus Christ, but I don't think Dylan was one of them.

I am anxious to see the movie. I followed Cash's career and own a lot of his music.

I saw him do a walk-on at the Opry at the Ryman in June of 1968 and saw the crowd go in a complete frenzy. I actually have pictures.

I saw about a 6 minute clip of it CMT was showing. Couldn't take my eyes off the guy playing Luther Perkins. Could have been his ghost.

I saw Johnny Cash in concert ant Metzger Park outdoor theater in Evansville, Indiana when I was about 15 years old. Come to think of it, that was same year I blew out my knee playing H.S. football for Lake View high in Chicago---and became the first person ever to get an ACL repaired in an improvised spur-of-the-moment operation by Doc Sid Sideman. But I digress...

Some years after that Freddy Holstein and I spent an amazing night with a very wasted Johnny Cash folk bar-hopping in Chicago. I've recounted that in another thread I'm sure. Try a search on Johnny Cash. It ought to pop up...

The name of the movie is: "Walk The Line"

Pauline - Well, Dylan seems to have been under the impression that he had a personal relationship with Jesus, starting in the late 70's... Not that I'm saying he met him face-to-face, exactly.

That was the impetus behind that dreary "Slow Train Coming" album.

Though I liked the title tune and "Man Gave Names".

Kinda sad that one would like the fake vocals and Hollywood horses//t version of Johnny Cash and trash the real one. Johnny Cash recorded over a hundred albums of traditional, original and classic American music, and much of it doesn't "suck" at all. His original material alone deserves far more respect than this (see "I Still Miss Someone," "Big River," and dozens of others.) Among other things, he proved that you don't have to be a good singer to be a great vocalist.

But he is a good singer, who was never off key and had fine timbre and sustain and his phrasing was pretty good also.

I'd agree with that, Martin. His voice has an odd sound that is very distinctive, but it's not off key. He also had a very good range, and a tremendous low bass.

funny ... to my ears he always sounded "quavery" and off-key. His vocal power came from the deep conviction with which he delivered the lyrics, like he'd lived through every word.

Not off key? Surely you jest! He had a very distinctive voice. When you heard it, you knew it was Johnny Cash singing. But to say he never sang off key, well, I question that.
