Fingers?

Well, that's a good point, Little Hawk. I was sitting here thinking of the things one could do without fingers, and drew a blank. Playing the oboe would seem to be out, as well as stimulating Marilyn Monroe. Petting dogs, milking cows, shaking hands, pluggin dikes (and dykes).
You've got a good point. I can't think of anything you could do with fingers that you could do better without them. Of course, fingers can become sticky at times, and then...

Whenever I feel the slightest bit self-important, I think of all the dirt that never did have a chance to sit up and look around.
---------Kurt Vonnegut

Degenerate sons and daughters, life is too strong for you. It takes life to love life!
---Lucinda Matlock--in Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology

Yes, I'm thankful for this life I've got. And I'm thankful for the lives that all of you have as well. It is you, and the music we all make, that makes my time here ephemeral.

I am thankful that a handful of people in the world are enlightened enough to question
the platitudinous "thankfulness" that is spouted so much these days.

I am thankful for the human brain which I see as a hopeful path out of the ignorance
we find in contemporary society, politically, religiously and economically.

I am hopeful that we may as a species be able to enlighten ourselves before we destroy
ourselves with our penchant for destruction.

I am thankful for the idea that there is a social conscience that supersedes any system
of thinking or believing.

At 65 I'm thankful for the love of music which has stayed with me all my life and for the enthusiasm to do a few gigs every week. I,m thankful for the good health enjoyed by my wife, my four (successfully raised) children and myself. One small problem - logic has made me an atheist so to whom should I offer my thanks?

I am thankful for nice mudcatters. I am thankful that my arthritis is not too terrible at the moment. I am thankful that I have not caught the swine flu even though it is currently work building. I am thankful in advance for my Scotland holiday next week.

I am thankful most of all for my lovely partner TheSilentOne.

That's SO good that you have been able to do that and be so open and sensible about it,Liz. Your daughter will always be grateful for that, I am sure.

You, too, Villan, I agree with you and Liz. I don't think you sound mean at all. It is shameful what we allow with people. I was grateful when my dad finally passed, even though he hadn't had to be away from home for very long at the end, it was just time and best that he let go. Nevertheless, I still miss him and extend my sympathies.

At the moment I am really thankful for the good doctor I have been going to who caught a misdiagnosis and got me the right meds to get better from pneumonia. It's been a long two weeks, but I have turned the corner and it is definitely something to be grateful for!

VTam, I figured those were your own diagrams ala your beaded work. BTW, do you have any photos online which we might see?

Villan - I know exactly where you are coming from! I cannot bear to see people left to linger - something we wouldn't do to animals. You have my sympathies nonetheless.

I'm thankful that we got to New Zealand when we did. Mother was very ill for a while and even the staff at her home were worried - for once my sister hadn't got it muddled. However, whether it's a result of us being here, or just good nursing care and high energy drinks, she's a lot better and putting on weight again. She's still a bit weak and slow, but she's likely to be around for a while yet. Now Limpit has a few memories of her grandmother whom she hadn't seen since she was 2, and I've had a chance to see she is being cared for and to say goodbye. I've also had a chance to discuss arrangements with my sister, and am easy in my mind that when it does happen, mother won't be alone and she won't be left to linger.

Do you know what I am thankful for!

That my mother who was 93 passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 3rd 2009 aged 93.

Some of you will think that I am not a very nice person for saying that.

However, when my Dad died 3 years ago, he left my mother in a nursing home, almost blind, couldn't walk, needed nursing staff to do everything for her. She had lost her dignity and her quality of life was NIL. Every visit was very painful to see her the way she was.

Our pet animals are treated better. They are at least put to sleep.

Why do we think its not right to allow people in such a situation to be put to sleep in a peaceful way, rather than see our loved ones go through so much misery.

She was so unhappy.

I don't need condolensces as I am OK about it all, and I feel that my mother is now in peace where ever she may be.

I am not religious, so don't need that side of things.

Just thought I would share that with you.

This is how I feel about things

MY FORTUNE

My fortune's in the sunshine and in the falling rain
The sweetness of the meadows when flowers bloom again
The scent of coloured blossoms that hang from every tree
The glory of the springtime, that's wealth enough for me

Bright heather on the moorland with swallows swooping low
The misty days of Autumn, cold winter's ice and snow
A gently flowing river, an angry roaring sea
The ever changing seasons, that's wealth enough for me

The hops that make a hearty brew - the berries for the wine
The harvest from the garden and golden fields so fine
Sweet apples from the orchard, sweet honey from the bee
The fruits of nature's bounty, that's wealth enough for me

A friend to stand beside me, a hand that I can hold
The love of someone special, that's worth much more than gold
Good ears to hear the singing and eyes that I may see
The sunset and the dawning , that's wealth enough for me.

Thank you in advance to Max, Moderators and the good Mudcat Folk for providing a welcome distraction from the pain and sorrow I face in the coming days and weeks.

April 28 is the 4th anniversary of my daughter Andie's (she was 23) death. She was lively, adventurous, intelligent, well informed, opinionated, talented and beautiful and most importantly actively kind and helpful. She never shied from going out of her way to make the way easier for friends and strangers.

Much of Mudcat reminds me of Andie. I just know she would have loved it here and she would have been one the most outspoken. In fact, she probably has visited Mudcat searching for trad songs as she was an apprentice bard in the Medieval SCA. I will never know if she left comments or questions here, but I like to think she might have.

Anyway I just want to thank you all for helping me through what will be a difficult time. Follows is my itemised list of things I am thankful for.

* Information re music and other things which catch my interest
* Advice about the intruments I am learning to play
* Filling my bucket daily (a description applied to my Andie at her funeral) with experiences of your cares and care for each other, your humour, your annoyances, your rage, your politics, and your mind boggling knowledge.
* And in both small and great ways guidance on how to conduct my life

So thank you all Mudcat denizens. Thank you for letting me know you and for lifting me up.

What both Jacqui and Kendall said.

I'm thankful I have a job. It's not perfect, but, despite the low pay, it's better than the job I had last year.

I'm thankful for my health insurance, which, despite having to pay a fair amount for it, is better than I expected.

I'm thankful for our (Curmudgeon's and mine) health. Tom's "new" heart valve and repair of almost five years ago is going strong. (So how, exactly DO you download music to a defibrillator?!?)

I'm especially grateful for our friends and family, and The Press Room and our music community.

We're not only hanging on, but we're enjoying ourselves.

We're not rich, and life is a struggle, but basically life is good.

Linn

Congratulations, Wesley, that is a huge step, getting off insulin!! Counting from last Jan. I've lost about 25 this year and continue to lose. It feels good, doesn't it?

Rapaire, that is an important distinction.

i am still gratefull for the things I listed three years ago, but this year I feel an esp. gratitude for my grandson, Morgan, who just turned five. There is not a day goes by but what I give thanks for his presence in our lives. He is such a joy.

Here's my morning thanksgiving which he now does with me when he is over here:

Mother, father, god of my heart, I give thanks for all that we have, all that we give, and all that we receive. I give thanks for blessings for all of our family and all of our friends. I esp. give thanks for (insert any special petition.) I give thanks for this or something better, for the highest good of all concerned. So mote it be!

It looks like I'll be able to get off insulin once and for all before the end of the year. I've had to get rid of my "fat" cloths and buy all new stuff. Aside from that the rest of the family is still healthy - and so far we're still able to pay our bills. Now if we can just find a cure for autism........

I am thankful that William Shatner ain't been elected president, although he might be an improvement over George Bush, come to think of it...

I am thankful that Edgar Rice Burroughs told it like it was.

I am thankful God gave me a good set of choppers and nice eyes.

I am thankful to whoever designed pumps and slit skirts. Kreegah!
