Subject: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: X Date: 26 Nov 05 - 11:54 PM A little while ago, at the end of Earl's gig at the Myrtle Beach Bluegrass Festival Earl walked off the wrong end of the stage and fell about 4 feet. He was taken to Grand Strand Hospital in Myrtle Beach. |

Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: Ebbie Date: 26 Nov 05 - 11:58 PM I hope so too. That kind of thing must be a blow to his system. Best wishes to him. |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: van lingle Date: 27 Nov 05 - 06:04 AM I have too much respect for Mr. Scruggs and his contribution to Bluegrass to inquire as to wether or not he perhaps flung himself into the mosh pit, so I won't. I hope everything's ok. |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: GUEST,BanjoRay Date: 27 Nov 05 - 08:13 AM So how's his banjo? Ray |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: number 6 Date: 27 Nov 05 - 08:13 AM That's rather alarming ....at his age such falls can result in serious, serious injury .... I hope he's ok. sIx |

Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: Peace Date: 27 Nov 05 - 04:47 PM From an article dated November 27. Grand Strand Regional Medical Center has Scruggs listed in good condition. Scruggs apparently didn't suffer any serious injury which, is surprising for someone his age after suffering a big fall. "A member of the convention center's security staff said the Grammy-winning banjo player struck his head and suffered a cut over his eye after he fell as he walked off the stage at about 9:25 p.m. after his show at the 36th annual S.C. State Bluegrass Festival", according to the Myrtle Beach Online. They continue waying "the glare of the bright light apparently got in Scruggs' eyes and he couldn't see as others around him tried to warn him of the impending danger." Whole article here. Looks like he'll be doing OK. However, as sIx said, that's a heckuva drop for anyone that age. Especially when it happens 'unaware'. I expect the link above will be updated on Monday, so maybe check it then. If the link doesn't work on Monday, google earl scruggs, news |

Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: RichM Date: 27 Nov 05 - 07:27 PM When a person is his age, any injury is likely to be a long time healing. Earl Scruggs is a great musical pioneer. He deserves more respect than these last several comments. |

Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: GUEST Date: 27 Nov 05 - 07:53 PM you do. By your comments you either don't respect him or you are very aptly self-christened as a fool, one of exquiste caliber. |

Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: GUEST, TheBanjoist Date: 27 Nov 05 - 10:24 PM Earl had his banjo in his left hand as he stepped off the stage. It appears he fell on it and it may have broken his fall a little. It looks like the banjo did better then Earl. I don't know if anyone has really checked it yet, as Earl is more important than that banjo of his. |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: Dave Hanson Date: 28 Nov 05 - 02:42 AM One thing for certain is that Earl won't have lost his sense of humour, like some folks here. Best wishes to Earl, eric |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: Dead Horse Date: 28 Nov 05 - 06:57 AM Well said Eric. I was going to launch into a diatribe against idiot thinking along the lines of Guests post, but that would only feed the twit. Better to let 'em starve! |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: greg stephens Date: 28 Nov 05 - 07:01 AM What do you call one 5-string banjo player falling off a stage? |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: RichM Date: 28 Nov 05 - 07:15 AM Sense of humor? To laugh at an elder's fall? I don't think so. |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 28 Nov 05 - 08:47 AM Don't impose your anally retentive viewpoint on the rest of the world! When Hrothgar fell off the ladder while painting his house, he was teased about it (cracked ribs and all!) - and someone even turned up at the club with a song about the incident! |

Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: GUEST Date: 28 Nov 05 - 10:44 AM I see no humour what so ever in an 81 year old man falling. I hope comes out of this ok. |

Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 28 Nov 05 - 08:07 PM Those who insist on youngers showing respect for their elders better show me some unless you can PROVE you're older than me then! |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: Biskit Date: 28 Nov 05 - 10:24 PM seems Earl had a sense of humor about it, when asked if his Banjo was ok it was reported that it was still in tune,..Earl replied; you think I knocked it in tune?? Peace! Through Understanding ~Biskit~ |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: GUEST,RB in SC Date: 28 Nov 05 - 10:52 PM We can only pray that Earl is OK. I was there and saw Earl step off a 4ft high stage onto a concrete floor where he struck the frontal area of his head. The true danger is a closed head injury that can manifest itself at times much later as a subdural hematoma. I am shocked he even remained conscious. Several thousand people there were as well in shock as they waited silently over ten minutes for the ambulance to arrive. This is not the time for jokes. |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: Don Firth Date: 28 Nov 05 - 11:06 PM For those here who are a bit stiff-lipped, it might be pointed out that humor is a fairly normal method of dealing with something scary or unpleasant, especially if a disaster has been escaped. Had Earl Scruggs been seriously injured (according to reports, he could have been, but was not), it would be another matter. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: GUEST, TheBanjoest Date: 29 Nov 05 - 03:36 AM I thought you all would like to read this. John McEuen just sent this to me. It's part of a letter from Gary Scruggs. I guess you can't get better info than that. ------------------------------------------------------ ..fyi.. and for others.. here is part of an email to me from Gary Scruggs..: Hi John, Dad is in Baptist hospital now. He will have to have surgery on his right kneecap, but first the doctors are running some tests on him. Surgery is scheduled for 1:00pm tomorrow (Tuesday). His right hand is swollen, but is not of great concern at this moment since he has seems to have good movement with his fingers. He has a two inch-or-so cut over his right eye. The cut was pretty deep and I think was probably caused by his glasses frame. What happened: We were playing an indoor bluegrass festival in Myrtle Beach, SC Saturday night. Steps to the four foot high stage were at stage left. There were no railings, lights, or white tape markers toward the edges of the stage. I ran across the stage toward him and by the time I was there, two doctors were already at his side. Dad was conscious and alert. One doctor was asking him questions such as "What's your name?" "What have you been doing tonight? "Do you know where you are?" He answered them all correctly. ........>>>>>>>>>>> He is now back in Nashville recovering.. John |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: GUEST,Auggie Date: 29 Nov 05 - 11:09 AM Yeah, sure sounds like a real laughing matter to me. Hopefully, none of you who seem to find this so amusing will get to experience it on a personal level as I did with three different 80+ year old family members. In our family, two of those recovered. For the third, it was the first step down a slippery slope that led to being hospitalized for months for one thing after another, eventually contracting pneumonia and finally passing away. I don't know, maybe sometimes I expect too much of you people. |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: number 6 Date: 29 Nov 05 - 11:42 AM I last saw Earl Scruggs last September at an outdoor concert at Thomas Point Maine. I vividly remember how frail he was walking off the sage and out back onto his bus ... he had to be helped along all the way. I'm amazd he didn't break any bones on this fall, and but still am concerened with this recovery. I'm in agreement with Auggie and the others who expressed their resentment to the humour in this matter ... regardless of reasons. The elderly have to be held in respect and with these kinds of things some sensitivity should be expressed. sIx |
Subject: RE: Earl Scruggs Falls Off Stage From: David Ingerson Date: 29 Nov 05 - 09:13 PM "Knocked it into tune!" What a great banjo joke. No one means to be disrespectful. I'm sorry some of you are taking offense. No offense is meant. Different people have different ways of working through stress and hurt. I just hope that if I live into my 80's and take a good fall, I'll be able to laugh and joke about it. Without laughter my life would be pretty grim. David |
