Subject: BS: Avoid Nevada From: Bert Date: 06 Dec 05 - 01:45 AM Tourists beware! I was driving LEGALLY in Douglas County Nevada and was pulled over by a cop. He gave me a ticket for having expired tags. Well in Colorado you are allowed a month's grace after your tags expire before you have to renew and we had been travelling, so we hadn't renewed our tags. we still had a week left of the grace period so our tags were STILL LEGAL. I decided to fight the ticket and went down to the courthouse. I was told that traffic tickets were only dealt with at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays. So our party of six had to wait another week (it was noon on Monday and they refused to see us) to fight the ticket. When I got to court the next Monday they dismissed the charge. Still it was quite an expensive ticket. Six people's stay for a week. And then on the way back we hit a blizzard and had to stay in a hotel for two nights. We would have missed the blizzard if we hadn't had to stay to fight the ticket. So - AVOID NEVADA - FREEDOM COMES EXPENSIVE THERE!!! |

The cops in Nevada rely on the fact that most tourists won't be able to stay and fight the ticket. That's why they only have ONE specific time in a week when they will see you. So most drivers will just pay the fine and go home. But I was decidedly pissed as my tags were legal and I should not have been pulled over. So if you got to Lake Tahoe, stay on the California side. Emerald bay is on that side and it's much prettier than anything on the Nevada side. |

I was there a lot back in the late 70's and early 80's, but I was out in the boondocks most of the time, living with the Indians (Natives). I had the impression that Nevada cops are kind of like a watered-down version of the Gestapo (if you happen to attract their attention). I did not attract their attention, as it happened. |

There's a corner where they just sit and wait for you because it's a trap, and I fell into it. My street had a jog in it at one intersection, resulting in a left turn then a right turn to keep traveling in the same direction. If you choose to go straight down the intersecting street instead of making that second turn, you're into his clutches becauses they consider going straight an "illegal left turn." Go figure. As Bert says, I was not staying for a long time or I'd have fought it. I ended up paying the fine because I thought I might in the future like to drive through Nevada on my way to someplace else and I didn't want a warrant out for my arrest. I did blow off a parking ticket in New York City, and was surprised to discover some 10 years later that they'd sent a notice to an old address of mine trying to close out the ticket. A friend sent it to me. I think I sent it back to NY saying I'd moved and left no forwarding address. . . (That ticket was generated at a time when it added great insult to injury--my vehicle was parked on the street and had been broken into by some neighborhood kids. I spotted it on my way to the train station to go to work, so had to move it and secure it quickly and ended up with my bumper over the line at a cross walk). SRS |

They have a 25-mile an hour limit in the village, and an expensive police department to maintain. Most of the time you can't speed in the village because it's bumper-to-bumper traffic, but if you go through late at night or early in the morning, and have a clear run, they're lurking... Peter. |

The :"grace period" is not a legal concept, it is a courtesy which does not have to be honored by any cop. So, legally, you didn't have a leg to stand on, and it wasn't the cop's fault that you didn't renew your license tags when it was due. My ex wife got pulled over and given a ticket for "Criminal speeding"..she was doing 80 mph in a 35 mile zone. The cop could have arrested her, thrown her in jail until the court was ready for her, and he could have impounded her car. Instead, he reduced the complaint to 50 mph and let her go on her way. Then, she has the nerve to complain that it was a speed trap! Some woman from Massachusettes was stopped for speeding, 50 in a 35 zone, was issued a ticket, and she said to the cop, "Don't you Maine cops give warnings"? He replied, "Yes, there's one over there, it says SPEED LIMIT 35. In 55 years of driving I have gotten two tickets. I was guilty as sin both times. |

This pooch is as sweet as the day is long. She was a stray, injured a glancing blow in traffic (the vet guesses) and when she bounced she hit her face on the road. All of the top teeth between her canines were broken, and when I took her in to be spayed and have the teeth attended to surgically a month had passed. We only learned of the abscess at the time of the surgery, there was no hint in her behavior. There are many parts of Nevada that are beautiful, but they tend to be the parts where there isn't all of the built up gambling activity. I was considering doing a Ph.D. at UN Reno, and it was possible to find nice affordable housing outside of that brightly-lit 24/7 gambling environment. It didn't take long to get out of town to the wild areas around it. The most incredible body of water I think I've ever seen is Pyramid Lake. I've never seen water that exact color before, and when one considers the source, Lake Tahoe, there is a natural history/human history story (the damming of the Truckee river so white farmers can grow hay on marginal land while the lake and the Paiute Indian reservation around it and the amazing fish in it languish) that is worth telling. But try spilling your seed on the ground in Utah (in public anyway), and you are in real trouble. A carpenter friend of mine was driving through Utah and he was ticketed. It was a case of mistaken identity and the case was tossed out. They had stopped him because he was thought to be a famous author. BUT, as a carpenter in that state, he was only a Mormon Nailer !! If it went past the deadline they renewed it and gave you the sticker for the month when it should have been renewed, so you couldn't push it out a month each year (like you can with the state inspections). I was a couple of weeks past the renewal date last time when I went to a local grocery store service desk to get my tag--and had to sign a document saying I hadn't received any tickets since the tag expired, etc. They're cracking down so I'll have to pay it on time now. It shook me up a bit, but obviously not enough to smarten me up. This has been the second time in the past year I've done it. Fortunately I'm still not as bad as my husband. He was pulled over while driving our daughter's car, only to discover that he had forgotten to renew his driver's license a couple of months previously. The officer at least allowed the vehicle to be towed to our home, rather than impounding it or he and the dog, instead of riding in the tow truck, to the dog's delight, would have had a long walk. Quite nice of the police really, considering the dog had tried to take his face off when he leaned in the car window and considering, that a few weeks earlier my husband had received a call from the police station regarding some unpaid gas as well. Seems he, described by the gas station attendant as, "an older man, who drove off slowly from the pumps", had forgotten to pay for his gas. When the police called us on the phone, my husband said, ÒOh no, how can that be?Ó The officer said, ÒAre you over 40?Ó And when my husband replyed, ÒYes,Ó the officer said trailing off, in a sad sort of way, ÒMe too....me too.Ó LOL |

If you are innocent and even have a policeman willing to testify that you are innocent you must pay $80 court fees to be found innocent. Its cheaper to be presumed guilty. |

What is the poing in having an expiration date if it is not firm? Why not a sign that says SPEED LIMIT 65, UNLESS YOU ARE FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE. I'll bet there is no other state that honors that "grace period". When the plates expire they are no longer legal. No two ways about it. I saw a car the other day with plates that expired in May. Guaranteed when he gets a ticket it will be the cop's fault. I have a right to carry a gun, but the middle of the St. Croix river is the boundry between Maine and Canada, and if I were to try to carry that gun across the river the Canadian police would clap me in irons, and they wouldn't give a rats ass how legal it is in Maine just a few feet away. In Colorado a month's grace period is allowed by law and it is printed on the registration document. You can't get any more legal than that. The plates were legal enough for the ticket to be dismissed, but I had to be there at 9:30 Monday Morning to fight it. They only deal with traffic tickets at that time. if you go to the court house at any other time they won't talk to you. Most states recognize other states legal plates. Nevada doesn't. They trap tourists and slap them with a fine hoping that they won't be around to fight the ticket and will just pay the fine. Don't go to Nevada. |

Here's an example: my daughter just got a North Carolina learner's permit that allows her to drive during certain hours, and when a 'responsible licensed driver' is in the front seat with her. Now, she went to visit relatives in VA and NJ. Could she drive there on that permit? As a life lesson, I let her make the phone calls to the out-of-state DMV. Bet you could have heard the laughter from New Jersey without the phone.... But, better than if she had tried to drive in Jersey and *hope* they honored NC law. Dani |
