New, nothing! I saw a whole bunch of them one night after I'd drunk about two gallons of cheap beer. And white snakes, too. And blue elephants.

Well, more power to it for having remained undiscovered for so many years.

I suppose we'll soon be seeing interviews on Entertainment Tonight.

Thanks for the link.

This is wonderful, we don¡¯t get new carnivores very often; I believe the last was Everett's ferret badger in the 1890¡¯s (excuse the apostrophe) if interested you can find out more here http://www.badgers.org.uk/badgerpages/ferret-badgers.html#SpeciesInfo

One can discover dozens of new species in as little as an hour 300 + ft down in the Amazon River. It sounds fishy but its true.

"The animal, which has very small ears and large hind legs, was spotted in the Kayan Mentarang national park in the mountainous jungles of Kalimantan, where vast tracts of rainforest still remain."

It's a freakin' kangaroo.

Donuel is right..there ARE new species waiting deep (vertically) in the Amazon...but that is natural, since we don't go there much. But a new mammal is VERY unusual. (Yeah...it 'kinda' looks like a tree kangaroo, but the experts are saying otherwise)

I remember when the Okapi was barely known!

As an Aussie, I can say it looks like either a tree kangaroo, or a very skinny possum.

In the wilder areas of the Upper Peninsula of northen Michigan here in the U.S., these animals were merely myths. They were known to zoologists and natives up there by the name Hidebehind---mainly because it was always hiding behind people. Indeed , nobody has ever seen one.

Their existence was only confirmed by blind faith!

(For many, I guess, that was enough... ;-)

But NOW, in far off Borneo, maybe the old tall tale (tall TAIL ;-) creature will have to be renamed!!

Love,

Art

I an sure that it is true and there is even a mammal that frequents these depths in the Amazon River. But this not a newly discovered species of mammal.

It is hardly unusual to still be finding new types of other classes of animal - in fact it would be unsuual if we were not. However the possibility of a new species of mammal is remarkable news.

But not for very much longer, I gather.
