Happy Birthday!

Joyce Kilmer

was born 12/6/1886
(died in action 7/30/1918 & received the Croix de Guerre)

Nothing to do with folk song as far as we know, but considering all the Parody threads lately, Kilmer certainly gave the world one of the greatest of all parody opportunities.

I think that I shall never see,
A billboard lovely as a tree
        Perhaps, unless the billboards fall,
I'll never see a tree at all.

                 O. Nash

Or:
I think that I shall never see,
        A bodhran (your choice here)

I won an on-line poetry contest with my poem about this poem. It went:

I think that I shall never see,
A poem as bad as Kilmer's Trees.
So here I leave the rhyme scheme of that horrid verse,
In hopes that never e'er shall I be known to write
A poem that's any worse.

Art Thieme
