Too often when I t ravel, I forget to bring along a good book and end up rummaging through all the latest best sellers in the airport terminal. I have a couple of favorite Airport Terminal authors... authors whose books I would never buy except when I'm stranded in an airport with hours to kill. My favorite, I guess, is Dean Koontz. He's actually a pretty god writer, and a quick read, so by the time the wheels are touching down, I'm almost done with the book. Stephen King is another Airport Terminal author for me.

Howaboutyou?

Jerry

The "Worst Case Scenario" series.

USAF Survival manual.

SAS How to survive on land and sea.

Alive!

Well, actually...the ones I've had with me recently were a collection of Sherlock Holmes pastiches, "The Great Influenze", the latest Dilbert cartoon collection, and Bryson's history of the universe.

Aw, c'mon Peace! From 35,000 feet it would take you about 3 minutes at terminal velocity (about 120 mph) to hit the ground. Of course, you'd most likely have either frozen to death or at least lost consciousness long befor the thud. Besides, most accidents occur at takeoff or landing, when you're still on the ground.

Or so they say.

I love the stuff. Just got the Italian Secretary by Caleb Carr.

Airline terminals, these days, are truly depressing places. That's why I always re-read STEPPENWOLF whenever I have to hang out there. Both of those men, Steppenwolf and/or Herman Hesse, could've really benefitted from a high dose of Zoloft!

Of course, I'm talking about books you can BUY in an airline terminal. What terminal do you fly out of, Art? Maybe I need to change my flight plans. The problem with Airline terminal books is that you have such a limited choice... almost exclusively a dozen writers or so ... John Grisham and Tom Clancy are two others, besides Koontz and Stephen King.. Once in awhile you might find something with a little more heft to it, but it's mostly escapist reading. For poor folks like Peace, who probably needs the Winnie The Pooh stories.. :-)

Wassamatter, Jerry? You don't like the in-flight magazines? The catalogs that tell you all about monogrammed golf balls and gold-plated tees? There's always USA Today.

And the in-flight movies:

Airforce One
Airplane
Airport

Anything to buck up the ol' spirits.

I figure I have logged over 250,000 miles and the odds are gettin' bad. Two near misses and one time I could swear the darned 707 was gonna shake itself to pieces in CAT.

I was on a cruise and wanted them to show "Titanic" but they wouldn't.

Heck, Bruce, my brother has over a million combat miles, courtesy of the USAF. And he's only smoking a pack an hour nowadays. (Actually, he doesn't go anywhere he has to fly to right now. No need.)

Seriously though, the odds are for each flight and are not cumulative. The counter resets itself, so to speak, when you step off the plane.

But like the chance of snow (and 'most anything else), I figure the oddss are 50-50. It either will or it won't, and there certainly isn't much I can do about it either way.

Or perhaps that's the old Infantryman speaking....

"Besides, most accidents occur at takeoff or landing, when you're still on the ground."

To quote an old friend of mine when I said just that to him: "No, they occur on landing, because when you're taking off you're going UP!" He too dislikes flying.

I'd willingly do it for something like a medevac or helivac, but just to get around--nope, I think not. Trains are good. Yep. I like trains. I had a firend who was terrified of flying and so he took a train. He died, A plane crashed into it. (Just kiddin'.)

Okay, Seamus, okay!

The one I had was

New Sherlock Holmes Adventures, ed. by Mike Ashley, with stories by Michael Moorcock, Amy Myers, HRF Keating, Edward D. Hoch, Basil Cooper and other writers.

And here's a list of some others I have:

Martin H. Greenberg, et al. Holmes for the Holidays. Holmes, Watson, and Christmastide.

Martin H. Greenberg and Carol-Lynn Rossel Waugh, eds. The New adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

June Thomson. Holmes and Watson.

Marvin Kaye, ed. The Game is afoot.

Michael Reaves and John Pelan, eds. Shadows over Baker Street. SH meets the world of HP Lovecraft.

I also have a genuine FIRST EDITION of The Misadventures of Sherlock Holmes, ed. (I believe) by Ellery Queen. Yes, it's ex lib. and yes, I came by it legally.

PM me if you like to read any of these. I lend my books, assuming they're returned eventually (except for the "Misadventures.")

How 'bout The Seven Per-Cent Solution (I've forgotten the author's name)? Not too long. Quick read.
Since I never know what's going to happen(noted while a parent of minor children), I usually have the reading project, and a crossword puzzle, or lined notepad for any letter-writing project, in my purse when I leave the house. For the trip to and from Getaway: 3 reading projects(2 of which proved not worth the bag space, 1 of which I finished--constitutionally incapable of putting a book into a trash receptacle, I gave the 1 away to Ferrara. And the next day, as I prepared to leave, my hostess gave me a copy of an Amy Tan novel, hardcover, which was absolutely fascinating!! Didn't quite finish it before I got home. This was a train trip--both ways.
Books rule. As good as the "internet" is, it's not as dependable for info storage as books. IM(never-to-be)HO         Tw

Of course, many of the accidents occuring on landing had their root cause while the plane was in the air. It's only on landing that you discover whether it will be fatal

Words of comfort for flyers;

Only the last 1/2" can be fatal on landing.

Remember that all the equipment around you has gone to the lowest bidder.

As long as the number of take off's = the number of landings..no problem.

I like Robin Cook's books as airport terminal books, but they should be banned in hospital waiting rooms ;-)

I read the free glossy book in the seat pocket of a plane once. It was one of those cheap airlines presenting itself as youthful and carefree. There were pictures of the crew partying on their time off. I hope it was their time off. Anyway there was the co-pilot, looking about 12 years old, throwing a volley ball around. Recent date on the caption. Well anyway, sez I, he's just the co-pilot. Then I turned the page and there was the captain wearing a funny hat. Falling about with a glass of something potent in his hand. AND I swear he was even younger. Way too young to even grow a bit of fuzz on his smooth chin. Understand me - I'm not against youth as such but I want to see a kindly, wise, bearded driver with a few years under his belt next time. Cheers, Joy

I wouldn't dream of asking you for a loan of your books.

I'll get onto Amazon right away.
It sure looks like the terminal bookstores should be selling bulletproof vests as well as books after yesterday's incident in Miami.
