Subject: On the radio tonight From: Mr Sooz Date: 07 Dec 05 - 02:47 AM On BBC Radio 2 tonight, the Mike Harding Show will feature all of the songs from the Beatles Album Rubber Soul performed by all sorts of people. These include Ralph McTell singing Michelle, June Tabor with In My Life and Waterson Carthy's version of Norwegian Wood. Must be worth a listen. |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: The Borchester Echo Date: 07 Dec 05 - 03:49 AM On Late Junction on R3 later on at 22.20 will be Christmas Champions, a commissioned feature on Mummers' Plays from Chris Wood & Hugh Lupton which, using field recording, narrative poetry and song, will exolore this mystic tradition. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/worldmusic/feature_mummers.shtml |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: The Borchester Echo Date: 07 Dec 05 - 03:50 AM exolore Might even explore it too . . . |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: Geoff the Duck Date: 07 Dec 05 - 04:50 AM I would prefer to find a thread telling us that Mike Harding was going to use his show to play some British Folk Music. Let's face it - he only ever plays American people unless they are a young woman. If he wants to do a show of Beatles songs, it ought to be in a separate one-off slot of its own. Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: The Borchester Echo Date: 07 Dec 05 - 05:02 AM I would prefer to find a thread telling us that Mike Harding was going to use his show to play some British Folk Music This is called 'howling at the moon'. However, to be fair, I haven't yet heard this Rubber Folk CD: Drive My Car - Jim Moray Norwegian Wood - Waterson:Carthy You Won't See Me - Paul Brady Nowhere Man - Chris While Think For Yourself - Coope Boyes & Simpson The Word - Johnny Dickinson Michelle - Ralph McTell What Goes On - Boo Hewerdine & Eddi Reader Girl - John Tams I'm Looking Through You - Martin Simpson In My Life - June Tabor Wait - Cara Dillon If I Needed Someone - Show Of Hands Run For Your Life - Spiers & Boden but only two are by Irish artists and none are performed by Kate Rusby. This must be some kind of record. |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: Dave Hanson Date: 07 Dec 05 - 05:53 AM No Kate Rusby but Mikes other squeeky favourite Cara Dillon. eric |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 07 Dec 05 - 07:09 AM Well if artists of the calibre of June Tabor, Martin Simpson, CBS, Waterson Carthy etc etc think it's worth doing, that's good enough for me (and, I'll wager, a very great many others). Thanks for the info Mike, I'll take a listen. S:0) |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: Paco Rabanne Date: 07 Dec 05 - 07:23 AM The bloody Beatles again? Am I the only person in the bloody world who is sick of hearing them over and over on the radio? They imploded 35years ago for Gods sake! |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 07 Dec 05 - 07:32 AM Sorry Ted, I'm not old enough to remember the originals - just have to make do with these Johnny-Come-Latelys' covers! LOL! S:0) |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: GUEST Date: 07 Dec 05 - 08:01 AM There was a great version of 'I'm looking through you' a few years ago by Steve Earle! |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: Dave Hanson Date: 07 Dec 05 - 08:54 AM Just for once I agree with you ted. eric |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: Michael Date: 07 Dec 05 - 01:17 PM 'This must be some kind of record.' Yes your Ladyship; but we call them CDs now. Mike |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: The Borchester Echo Date: 07 Dec 05 - 01:26 PM Well, Michael (whoever you are), as I was remarking to Young Redin (the Pretender Earl Richard) just before that floozy dumped him down the deep drawer well: 'Isn't it amazing how many peeps who've had an irony bypass also haven't heard of Child #68?' |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 07 Dec 05 - 02:23 PM Yes, the Beatles parody prog should be interesting, More importantly is the later prog on BBC Radio 3 starting at 2220 (UK Time) featuring this new project by Chris Wood and Hugh Lupton. Chris was telling me about it a few weeks ago, and this is one thing I definitely won't miss tonight! PS...Both progs will be on the BBC site "Listen again" facility for the next week. Happy listening Ralphie Many years ago I had the honour of accompanying Mr Coope on "The Long and Winding road" Copies available on E Bay soon!! |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: cujimmy Date: 07 Dec 05 - 02:35 PM I'm off to the pub to watch the football then. |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: GUEST Date: 07 Dec 05 - 06:24 PM Though some of the Beatles covers were somewhat dreary, Mike Harding was worth listening to for Chris While. |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: BusyBee Paul Date: 07 Dec 05 - 06:27 PM Heard the SOH contribution at Sheffield last Saturday - good stuff. Calling the CD "Rubber Folk" does lead to all sorts of strange thoughts though!. |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: GUEST Date: 07 Dec 05 - 07:02 PM Skipped MH but Late Junction was excellent. |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: GUEST,Dazbo Date: 08 Dec 05 - 06:56 AM Well I thought most of it was utterly underewhelming! Well actually most of it wasn't that good - utter tripe more like. Spent most of the hour trying to learn MaDe Schottische so it wasn't a complete waste of time. I did like Run For Your Life though (it's my favourite track of the original LP) |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: The Borchester Echo Date: 08 Dec 05 - 07:05 AM underwhelming Exactly the word I just used Over There @ the beeb, having struggled through last night's broadcast on the replayer. Some of it (Dillon/While/Hewardine & Reader/and - sad to say - W:C) was cringingly awful. Tams/Tabor/S&B were best, though I really wish I hadn't bothered. The recording quality sounded muffled and SoH seemed considerably out-of-tune at points. OTOH, as Guest above remarks, the LJ broadcast later was stunningly good. |
Subject: RE: On the radio tonight From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 08 Dec 05 - 07:18 AM so did harding manage to get through the entire show without talking over the intros & outros of any of the specially recorded performances this time ?????????? |
