In the Battle of the Falkland Islands, the UK sinks Von Spee's flotilla.
Per Cyril Tawney, this was a "glorious" retaliation
for Von Spee's provision of the Royal Navy's
1st defeat in over a century - on 10/31/1914 at Coronel.

Oh the glorious feat of the phantom fleet
        We always will remember,
When we cleared the seas of Graf Von Spee
On the noble eighth of December.    [1914]

"The Noble Eighth of December;" in C. Tawney, Grey Funnel
Lines #60. (The song is still in Falkland tradition.)

Not to be confused with the 1982 Falkland/Malvina Islands War.

Wikipedia has an overview of the islands' history.

Britain should return many things, from the Elgin marbles to the Malvinas Islands.

We're planning to do just that - at the same time that the US returns Manhattan etc to their Native American owners

Return the Elgin Marbles to the Malvinas, Cleopatra's Needle to Australia, and Yorkshire to the moon.
