It's tricky with folky stuff. The mainstream sites don't supply it even if you did want to pay for it. Artists' or record companies' websites often provide samples of whole or bits of songs.

You can also try the Altavista audio search: http://www.altavista.com/audio

You might have to make your own mp3s from CDs.

no, "limewire" doesn't have ANY music. People have music which they.... ummmm...'share', legally or illegally, USING Limewire. Use it or not, lets be clear what is going on. You can also get TONS of music from "newsgroups"...if you know what those are, and your ISP gives you access, but the same issues remain.....some is legal, some is not... YOU have to decide.

Now...if you do a web search with the terms "MP3" and 'some type of music'...like 'folk' or 'rock' ...or using an artists name, you will gradually find sites which offer samples, or entire albums legally....that is, approved by the artist. There are also sites for older music with no copyright issues.

You can purchase cards (iTunes, Walmart, etc) and load them up with cash to use to purchase tunes. You can even purchase a VISA card that isn't really a credit card since you pay for it upfront
(try AAA)...lots of folks do this when they travel so as to not have to carry/lose cash. It's an option, but it's legal and you won't be cheating the musicians out of any money. iTunes, BTW, has a bit of everything.

MP3 downloads I'm not too interested in - what I mainly want to do is be able to listen to the music I have on the little MP3 player I got for my birthday the other week, both commercial CDs and home-made ones by fellow Mudcatters especially.

I've been using a neat little free programme, FreeRip, which does a good job and is convenient and easy to use - but I was wondering if anybody here has come across something a bit faster.

Yes, I know that I could hunt around for that with Google - but I think that the collective wisdom of the Mudcat is a resource always worth tapping into.

You can go to www.imesh.com and install a program called I-Mesh 6. It will give you many Folk albums that you can download legally. However, there is one catch. You can download the music to your hard drive but you can not burn it on to CDs. In order to do that you have to purchase the music. I have found albums from almost any Folk artist that I am looking for. They have an excellent search engine and it is all legal. Just put in the name of the artist or the name of the song you are looking for. It will give you the entire album.

If the downloads are with permission of the song/music writer and the performers, then that's cool by me. If not, it is theft. Dress it up anyway ya want, the artists are getting ripped off.

There are commercials that are flashed while using the I-Mesh program. The proceeds from those are used to pay the artists for the initial download to your hard drive. If you want to make additional copies to CDs, you have to purchase the music and it is e-mailed to you in the form of MP3 files. Either way the artists ARE paid. That is why it is legal.

Rabbi Sol
I downloaded imesh thinking I would give it a try and see how good it was.
I thought lets go for Kate Rusby.
Sure enough, plenty of stuff.
Downloaded it.

10 viruses
5 severe parasites.

Imesh can not be trusted - use it at your peril.

Needless to say I have removed hopefully all viruses and parasites and everything to do with imesh.

Thanks for your wonderful suggestion - not :-(

Go to Amazon.com. From the drop down search menu, choose "Music Downloads" and type in anything you want. For example "bluegrass". A number of possible free MP3 samples will be available. Anything on Amazon from Rounder records usually has a free MP3 downloadable to listen to. These are the full songs. Some real treasures there. Look for Alison Krauss, Rhonda Vincent, Tony Rice, New South, etc. if you like bluegrass. Lots of folk there too.

I got a couple from "The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash", some Alt Country stuff I really like. Gonna order the album soon. See? It works.

You'll have to register and sign in a membership with Amazon, but it's free. You need only provide them with an e-mail address. It hasn't increased spam for me because of it, though I always use a Yahoo address on the web.

if I read it correctly, Giok was not asking for a way to download music, as Firecat was. In that case, Giok, "Audacity" IS about as good as you can find to conver almost any music you already own to an MP3 for loading to the player. The are others, such as dbPowerAmp, but it requires an extra step to install a "Lame" decoder for MP3s.

There are many, many...as in LOTS of programs which will 'rip' your CDs to MP3s...some are payware, but Audacity is opensource freeware. It is pretty easy to operate and has big buttons..*grin*

When I shutdown, I get a dilaogue box appears and says something like this.

It mentions a DLL file PPLe??.exeVF

The application failed to install becuase windows is shutting down<<

Anybody got an idea of the problem? It only happened having downloaded and run imesh.

NoAdware AVG and PCCillin have all detetcted and deleted severe parasites and viruses. Run them a couple of times.

The Title Bar on the first dialogue box says the following

MSGFLTMC.EXE      DLL Initialisation failed

The message in the dialogue box says

The application failed to initialise because the window station is shutting down

The Title Bar on the second dialogue box says the following

VFPPL400.EXE      DLL Initialisation failed

The message in the dialogue box says

The application failed to initialise because the window station is shutting down

Having clicked on OK for each one, it then takes ages to shutdown.

Hi Villan,
I originally had the same problems with the previous version of I-Mesh (5). I even had the computer starting up by itself 2 hours after I shut it down. I had to update my PC cillin anti-virus program. That together with Adware 6.0 and Spybot Search & Destroy cured to problem permanently. I have recently replaced I-mesh 5 with I-mesh 6 with no problems. Make sure that your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs are UP TO DATE.

Sol
The problem still exist in imesh 6.
You should have given a warning that this might happen, so that people could make a conscious decision. You never mentioned it and I have spent hours trying to clear the crap out.

Incidentally I update my software daily and run them. So I don't need to be shouted at to bring mt programs UP TO DATE.

I have used noadware avg pccillin PC rescue Hijack this Spybot search and destroy

I have also been into the registry and searched for all the obvious things and deleted them i.e. imesh, the 2 exe files mentioned above.

Still I have the above problem. Plus a couple of webpages opening automaticcally for Casino and another one similar.

It has cost me a lot of heartache and time and money, which would not have happened if you had mentioned what happened in your last post.

In future please put the facts first before suggesting a programme that could potentially wreak havoc and does.

You can download the songs by Dawne Oakley (Mrs Pavane) from Motagator. These are (mostly) traditional folk songs, sung unaccompanied if that is what you like to listen to.

The Villan -

I don't use any of the music sharing programs that have been mentioned, so I can only comment in rather generic terms.

A number of such programs have typically included "tracking features" (translation - Spyware) that allow the distributors of the programs to keep track of what music files you download/exchange. So far as I know, none of them have ever provided a rationale for this, but it appears to be a CYA move - in case they get sued they can pass the buck to you.

In at least a few such cases, it has been widely publicised that Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D may remove the spyware component, and that doing so will "cripple" the main program.

A by-product of removal of the spyware component is that frequently Windows Add/Remove Programs cannot completely remove a program that has had some of its components modified after installation. Additonally, many similar programs do not "register" the program installation, so Windows Add/Remove programs can't remove them.

Some of these programs have provided "uninstall" utilities in the program folder, but in some cases the uninstall programs provided have been found to remove the program but not the spyware.

A "generic solution" sometimes offered is that you must REINSTALL the program and then immediately UNINSTALL it using a standard uninstall method.

The preferred method of uninstalling is usually to use Windows Control Panel Add/Remove programs. Some of these programs do not uninstall completely when you do it this way. If the Windows Add/Remove doesn't list the program, and/or if the uninstall fails, you may have to REINSTALL the program and look for an uninstall utility that came with the program. If this fails, you search the web for someone who's created a removal program - and hope they knew what they were doing.

As you observed, sharing access to computers belonging to anonymous persons is an act of faith, since you have no way of knowing what infects the random machine you might connect to. At this point, it's impossible to know whether the errors you've listed are from a mangled program or from one of the virus/parasite things you picked up in a download. I don't know whether avg keeps a log, but you should check to see if there is a record of what specific items were detected. You may need to know their names to search for complete removal information. The errors may be the result of your removal of a key program component during your attempts to get rid of the crud. If a program changes a needed item, and you just remove the item, a replacement may be needed.

The errors listed are of the kind you get when a file has been deleted but there is still an instruction telling the machine to open the file. An instruction of this kind can come from the registry, or from a file in Start or in Startup folders, or from another file (usually a .dll, sometimes an .exe) anywhere on your machine.

It is possible that your removal attempts have removed a Windows component that's needed. You can go to Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, and in WinXP on the sidebar there's an Install/Modify Windows Components. If you carefully check off what's supposed to be installed, Windows will usually repair damaged files that are part of the normal Windows system. You will probably need your Windows installation disk, and if you do this you should go DIRECTLY and IMMEDIATELY to Microsoft Update (It should be linked on your Start Menu), since a reinstall may interfere with security fixes since your disk was produced.

The last resort is to go to
SpywareInfo and/or to
Tom Coyote and/or to
Computer Guy.

All three of these are "help sites" run by volunteers; but they generally give expert and specific advice. I haven't personally asked one of them for help, but I've looked at several of their responses and would trust them. There are other similar sites, possibly as capable.

If you go to one of the above, be sure to READ AND FOLLOW EXACTLY the instructions given. Before posting your problems, you should read at least a couple of threads to see how they work, in addition to carefully reading any FAQs and "How Tos."

The usual drill, in summary, is to run the current and latest version of Ad-Aware, then run the current and latest version of Spybot S&D, then run the current and latest version of HiJackThis and start a new thread to post the HiJackThis log. Then wait, and check back for replies.

[For most users the only time you should ever use HiJackThis to change something is when one of these (or another similarly expert advisor) tells you specifically what to change. It's too easy to scramble your registry with this program, - - - unless you're extremely confident of what you're doing.]

A site I like to visit which has not troubled me with extraneous spyware and is legal consists of a lot of music generated for dispersal on the internet. It is very genre non specific and you must sample it to see if it suits your tastes:

comfortstand.com

It also links to other legitimately free sites such as oddiooverplay and more.

Thanks John
I will work back on your suggestions. I have done quite a few changes in regedit in the past and am always careful about what is changed.
I have already fed the results of Hijackthis to somebody for perusal, but he, like me di not see anything unusual.

I reckon like you say, is re instal and uninstall that mp3 programme. Then work through the rest step by step.

Before I do anything, I will go onto one of those sites you mentioned and see if they have a knowledge of the problem.

Some time ago, I used to use a brillient forum for sorting really difficult techie issues out, but the name fails me now aaaagh.

Thanks a lot John

Villan -

The sites I linked are mainly intended for solving spyware problems, but since spyware can often mess up everything else, they're pretty good - from what I've seen - at helping to fix up the associated problems. There are quite a few failry good help sites, with various specialties and varying competence levels. What I've seen on these has looked good, but of course "you're mileage may vary."

I didn't browse recent threads at any of them to see if there were references to any of the sharing programs.

"If the downloads are with permission of the song/music writer and the performers, then that's cool by me. If not, it is theft. Dress it up anyway ya want, the artists are getting ripped off."
That was Peace a number of posts back. I would just like to add that there is no such thing as a free download. Somebody had to pay for it.
Very few musicians make any money from what they do. The usual target is simply survival, so that they can continue making the music, which they like. That also goes for a lot of artists, whom you see as successful. It is just as true for many of those, who are on television and in the charts etc.
Most of us are happy to give away music as much as we can. I probably give away as many albums as I sell. However, recording music well costs money. I would give away more if I could, as would most artists. We just ain't that rich though!

Firecat: Just in case I'm misunderstanding, you're looking for a way of getting songs in MP3 format that you can play on your widget, right? The simple answer is to rip them from CDs that you own (in case you've not heard about this before, this just means copying each track from the CD and storing it as a playable music file on your computer, usually in MP3 format). Then you can choose which tracks you want to listen to, and transfer those files onto your widget. One of the best CD rippers around is CD-EX - see http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos.

Graham.

There are probably a couple of independent music websites still out there after the demise of mp3.com as an indie showcase. Sometimes you can find real gems.

iuma.com and besonic.com used to be good, not sure they're still good.

iuma.com is done for...the pages still come up, but no one can change their info/add mp3's or anything else. It seems to have just been left up as an archive of what was.

Please don't forget the independent record labels which were sometimes the ONLY source for folk, etc. before the Internet, i.e. Folk Legacy Records and Camsco Music, Mudcat's own Sandy and Caroline Paton and Dick Greenhaus, respectively. When you download something they offer on CD, from somewhere else, it hurts them in the personal pocketbook.
