Grand River, SD: Sitting Bull (Tatanka Iyotake)
was killed by tribal police on 12/15/1890 (b.1831).

Don't go away, stay at home if you can,
Stay away from that city, they call it Cheyenne,
For old Sitting Bull or Comanche Bill
They will take off your scalp on the dreary Black Hills.

"Dreary Black Hills" from Lomax, Cowboy Songs

It's certainly a dipthong & some use 'Iyotanka.' Otherwise, I & Y are the pretty much same in most languages & eras. So Yotanka is pronounced the same as Iotanka. "eeeoh." I used the Ency Brit. spelling but that last n is usually included elsewhere.

Since he didn't grow up using the Latin alphabet, it's all arbitrary anyway.

Thank you, once again, Abby.

I was fortunate enough to take a Wyoming History class at college from the late Bill Bragg, who wrote books and stories, both fiction and non-fiction, of the old West. For my final paper, I chose to write about the Ghost Dance religion and learned much about Tatanka Iyotake in my research. Partly because I held my professor in such high esteem, it was one of the best "A's" I ever received on a paper, esp. as he wrote "good job" on it, too.

All the best,

kat
