Subject: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Clinton Hammond Date: 16 Dec 05 - 10:40 AM Looking for the Mudcat Frappr thread... I pop the word 'frappr' into the search box to be told there are zero results.... What good is a 'database' that can't be searched? Oh... I know... it's cause of the crash almost a year ago isn't it... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Clinton Hammond Date: 16 Dec 05 - 10:42 AM Refreshing the list for back as far as a year and useing my browsers "Word Search" "Frappr" returns no results... What the f is wrong with this place now??? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Wesley S Date: 16 Dec 05 - 10:57 AM I put in the word Mudcat in the searchbox and it popped right up. Top of the list in fact. Try it. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Clinton Hammond Date: 16 Dec 05 - 10:59 AM I did that... got told there were NO results... Like I said in the first post Wes.... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Wesley S Date: 16 Dec 05 - 11:01 AM Well - If at first you don't succeed - start another new thread about how this places sucks. That always works. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: MMario Date: 16 Dec 05 - 11:12 AM Hey Clinton! How is your browsers failure to find a word the fault of MudCat? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Clinton Hammond Date: 16 Dec 05 - 11:14 AM You can't read either Mmario?? Try looking at the initial post again.... This isn't about my browser.... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Wesley S Date: 16 Dec 05 - 11:22 AM I tried it and it worked for me. I entered Frappr and it came right up. I suspect the failure here was with Clinton's patience level. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Paul Burke Date: 16 Dec 05 - 11:22 AM Perhaps it's not good because the people who maintain MC haven't got the time or knowledge to put it right. How much do you pay them for it? If you can do it better, volunteer your services! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: jeffp Date: 16 Dec 05 - 11:27 AM If you put "frappr" in the filter and set it for a year, one thread will pop up. Guess which one. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Clinton Hammond Date: 16 Dec 05 - 11:28 AM I have... They refuse... My "Patience level" has nothing to do with Mudcat returning a Zero Found search... how would it??? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Beer Date: 16 Dec 05 - 11:43 AM jeffp..... Tried what you said but it didn't work. Then I put a check mark in the box that says "Filter out" then got it. Try that Clinton. Beer |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 16 Dec 05 - 11:49 AM Perhaps the difference in results here is that some are using the filter and others the supersearch (which search for different things anyway - subject vs message body). As far as I understand it, the supersearch has not been updated since the crash as it looks to provide some chance of providing a means of restoring the old message_id order. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Dec 05 - 12:01 PM Jon's right. The SuperSearch depends on an index, and it hasn't been updated because we'd like to reorder the threads first. The SuperSearch is only one of our search engines. You can check the first message of the FAQ for full search instructions. On QuickLinks, we have the Old Advanced Forum Search which searches by user name and by message title. On the Forum Menu, we have the Filter, which searches by thread title. The Filter is our fastest search engine, and it's the one I use most. But yeah, Clinton, our SuperSearch is broken and has been for several months. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Dec 05 - 02:38 PM Sometimes you can use Google to search Mudcat. It doesn't always find what you're looking for, because not all threads have been indexed by Google. Just add "site:www.mudcat.org" (without quotes) to your search argument. For example, with the argument search suck site:www.mudcat.orgGoogle finds about 1,290 Mudcat threads where the words "search" and "suck" appear on the same page. It's even easier if you have Google's taskbar installed. You don't have to type "site:www.mudcat.org" - you just click "Current site" and it searches whatever website you already have loaded. This can be really useful when you're searching a site that doesn't have its own search engine, or if you just don't want to take the time to figure out how their search works. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: MMario Date: 16 Dec 05 - 03:49 PM Clinton I was referring to your post of 10:42 |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Clinton Hammond Date: 16 Dec 05 - 03:56 PM Again, that had nothing to do with my browser MMario... Mudcat failled to actually refresh a years worth of threads when asked to... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Sorcha Date: 16 Dec 05 - 04:22 PM Clinton, I'm sure it's nothing you can't fix in just a few minutes...just pop over to Mudcat Central and do it. Oh, you have a living to make? Well, doh.... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: Wesley S Date: 16 Dec 05 - 05:25 PM " Mudcat failled to actually refresh a years worth of threads when asked to... " Tragic - really tragic. The ten minutes it took to find your thread are lost FOREVER. I feel your pain - I'd demand a full refund. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: BuckMulligan Date: 16 Dec 05 - 07:22 PM BTW, next time you hit the Frappr, you could bookmark it. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: GUEST,Joe Offer, at work Date: 16 Dec 05 - 08:12 PM
The Search Box is mostly for the text within a thread (but it doesn't cover the most recent year). Use the other search engines if you're searching for titles. I will agree that it is inconvenient that the SuperSearch isn't working perfectly, but that's what the situation is right now. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Tech: Why does the search here suck? From: GUEST Date: 16 Dec 05 - 09:37 PM Why do people who do little more than piss and moan about everything keep coming here? Why don't you put your superior knowledge to work, create a superior web site, and watch the hundreds of Mudcatters leave Mudcat and follow you? You mal contents are so tiresome. |
