This popped out a few days ago---and I slept on it---reworked it some---and here it is.---My new little hairball of a song===a Chicago baseball fan's version of Herman Hopfeld's good song:

AS TIME WENT BY

You must remember this,
A curse is still a curse,
The Cubs are still the Cubs,
Fundamentals should be applied
And time goes by.

The Sox have won in four,
They didn't need no more,
That no one can deny.
Those fundamentals they applied
As time went by.

Is never out of date,
The Sox were filled with passion,
In the Series took four straight,
The goat just sits and laughs,
And Santo weeps and waits
For next year to come around...

Because the Cubs blew it again,
Again and then again,
Again and then again,
Again and then again,

Some few further notes: Steve Goodman's Cubs song refers to his composition "The Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request" It is much loved in Chicagotown on the North Side where the Cubs play. The goat is the mascot of Sam Sienis' bar called the BILLYGOAT TAVERN. Sam tried to bring that goat to a Cubs game many years ago, but was not allowed in. The animal, folklore says, cursed the Cubs---and they've never won a World Series since!------------------Steve Goodman passed away in the 1980s. He knew he had leukemia when he wrote the song----so what seemed prophetic to many fans back then, was only a cruel possibility---a joke of sorts--to Steve. Santo = Ron Santo who was a star for the Chicago Cubs in days of yore. He is now one of the radio broadcasters for the team, and he is quite vocal in expressing his frustrations for his baseball team.

This brings tears to my eyes, Art....

I was a Braves fan, but all the neighbors lived in Southeast Wisconsin before the Braves arrived, so they followed the Sox and the Cubs. So, I understand.

BTW, the guy who wrote As Time Goes By was Herman Hupfield, not Hopfield. :-)
