Went along to the Acoustic Centre last night to see PETER NARDINI.
GAVIN & CLAIRE LIVINGSTON and the LYNSEY DOLAN BAND. Thoroughly enjoyed the event which was pretty busy - some bits more than others - but overall a good time was had by all. Everybody in the audience got something out of it to talk about afterwards - always a good thing.

I understand that visitors on a budget could do quite well at the Eurohostel, on Clyde Street   Just a few moments walk from The Riverside, and only a few minutes walk from the Acoustic Centre.

Hi Sian,

There's a Travel Inn and Travel Lodge within a few minutes walk of all the main venues plus numerous other hotels to cater for all tastes and budgets.

Anything within the M8 'bend' will be fairly near all the main venues.

Personally, having attended 'Celtic Connections' for 10 years and stayed in most of the available hotels, I now use the Ibis at 220 West Regent Street (just off Sauchiehall Street) phone [phone] - good-sized rooms, comfortable, friendly staff, less than £50p.n. and less than 10 minutes walk from the Concert Hall and other main venues including The Piping Centre (a little further to The Fruitmarket but the Ibis is just 5 minutes walk from The Holiday Inn / Late Night Festival Club venue... usually the last venue you visit each night and the best venue for seeing the most artists in the shortest time).

Hope this is helpful. I see you're in Glasgow for the 'Showcase Scotland' weekend - if you've not been to 'Celtic Connections' before you'll love it - it's a great Festival.

But open it up more to those acts outside the Area and not just "local" acts. Scotland has tons of great stuuff out there.

Thanks, SC. Might be a bit expensive; my idea is to keep the cost down so they'll be encouraged to send me on other trips. 'Cause I'm SO responsible and all that.

So - are you saying that anywhere on the inside of that 'bend' in the M8 would be OK? I saw one small place not too far from the Piping Centre which I thought might be possible. But I'll also check out your places via my airline, as they often do deals.

All further suggestions also greatfully received.

there are other cheaper hotels... but if your w*rk is paying...

Either of these are very handy for the Concert Hall for CC, and within easy walking (or very short taxi hop) of the Merchant City and Clydeside, which is where other CC events are, and also the Fringe...

Bri... sorry ...Ragman - do you have any other suggestions for hotels, etc?

I'm coming up on the 19th and leaving on the 23rd so I'll try to call in at some point. I don't know the city at all, and the Celtic Connections website doesn't really go out of its way to help people 'from away' so ... can anyone suggest a good hotel central to CC venues? Work is paying for this, but I still need to keep the costs 'reasonable'.

There's been a few people asking for advance tickets to the Glasgow Fringe Festival events. We hate the thought of having to turn people away, but this year it has to be FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED.

We anticipate that the Riverside Club will be big enough for our needs, but there's always the possibility of piping the sound out into the bar, or even holding the event itself in the bar.

Must say, I'm pleased we to have to consider this as a problem, rather than worry if we'll get anyone turning up.   But your best plan is to ARRIVE EARLY to avoid disappointment!

Guest Topper, you could well be about to open a can of worms. Mick West has appeared at Celtic Conections in the past. However, mistery behind the selection of, who is who isn't, appearing at Celtic Connections and the abundant subsidities and bucket loads of funding thrown towards the Concert Hall bun fight, has been likened to The Da Vinci Code. So much so, that Dan Brown has concidered this as the basis for a forthcoming book. I'm not too sure a fringe festival is such a great idea BUT you will have a chance to hear some real folk music at a realistic price.

Why isn't he part of 'Celtic Connections'?

Mick has one of the best voices to be heard anywhere - he deserves to be heard.

As I understand it the Danny Kyle Open Stage at CC isn't as open and informal as you think, Topper: you have to send in CDS etc of your performance to be pre-selected. Yes, a great place to hear some rising stars (+ some who'll never rise very far) but not an Open stage in the sense of just turn up and put yer name down.

The Programme is now settled for the festival. Lots of good music at very affordable prices. There are also two great prizes for the Open Stage event, namely One full day (first prize) and a half day (second prize) studio time in local recording studios. Topper, if you read the blurb on the website you will see that what we are trying to achieve is an outlet for 'local' talent. This is in no way meant to compete with CC but to complement them.

We are providing affordable prices and informal venues, with opportunities for music lovers to see and appreciate the depth of talent that exists in the Glasgow area, most of whom would never get anywhere near a big stage in CC.

It might even bring some new faces forward and if they got a 'big' stage next year at CC or somewhere else, then we would have achieved another ofour aims.

If you are in Glasgow 11-29 January 2006 and looking for affordable music evenings there is something happening every night in the Merchant City. The Glasgow Fringe Festival provides a showcase for local musicians, a songwriting and an open stage competition in the informal Laurie's Bar (Acoustic Room), King St. There are also some larger events being staged in the Riverside Club, Fox Street.
