Well folks, it is finally official. Jacqui and I will be going to California to visit Utah Phillips. He and I will be doing a performance in Grass Valley CA. on April 8th 2006.

I've got you on the calendar, Kendall. I'm only a half hour from Grass Valley, so I hope you and Jacqui can stop by. That's at the peak of our wildflower season, so maybe Christina and I can take you to our favorite waterfall. We even can provide lodging, if you don't mind dogs and cats in the house.

In a shrewd deal earlier this year I got a copy of one of Kendall's CDs in exchange for sending a copy of a movie he'd been looking for. On christmas morning I wanted to play something other than one of the usual christmas movies in the background as we contemplated opening gifts, so I put on the story part of the CD, and had the kids rolling out of their chairs with laughter.

That should be some concert! For those in the region, the commute will be worth it!

Nevada County's favorite folksinger returns to the Center for the art for a rare solo concert.

The son of labor organizers, Bruce "U.Utah" Phillips, born in 1935 in Cleveland, Ohio, is the fundamental pragmatist who makes stories of any raw material that finds its way in to his experience. Whether miner, revivalist, revolutionary or visionary, all have received Phillips' polite attention. A former warehouseman in Salt Lake City, he learned yarning from Earl M. Lyman, an elder of the Latter Day Saints, and Phillips' employer, who interrupted the morning's wrapping and shipping to tell anecdotes and events of Mormon pioneer days. At the end of a workday, Phillips went to the library to read territorial history to find questions to ask Lyman the next day. Thus Phillips learned the art of storytelling as a way to avoid work. Zuni chants and Navaho songs and lore from Father Liebler, a San Juan priest, plus conversations with hoboes and cowboys, lectures by anarchist and pacifist Ammon Hennacy, and a performance by Marian Anderson during the Korean War augmented Phillips' store of eyewitness accounts, anecdotes, tales, and philosophy.

The only time Utah and I have performed together was in someone's living room It was an impromptu lie off, but it worked well, so we gonna try it on stage.

It worked better than well. The two of them had the rest of us spellbound for the best part of an hour, without either of them seeming to put any effort into it.

That was a real priviledge.

Where's you get that blurb, Amos? A Google Search shows it's been used many times, in many places. Usually, the Grass Valley-Nevada City people come up with more original descriptions of Utah Phillips, since he's such a familiar character in this area.

KT, nudge, nudge the Alaska Folk Festival runs from April 3 to 9th this year. And this year is the year you are doing a set, remember?

Tell them to come north, KT- Kendall, Utah has been here - and put on a very good show; get yourselves together and come on up and we'll book y'all. We have venues that seat from 20 in a living room to 1200 in an auditorium, your choice.

Get a hold of Utah's agent. Setting up a gig takes time and I don't know if 3 months is enough. I'd love to do it.
