Subject: Lyr Req: The Lakes Of Sligo From: Warsaw Ed Date: 27 Dec 05 - 08:32 PM Does anyone know where I can find the lyrics to the song "The Lakes Of Sligo". The song is mentioned in Margo O'Donnell's recording of "Lonesome Mother's Call". The tune included in the PubScouts site as GIF and ABC Notation. But I can't find any lyrics. Any suggestions? Thanks. Ed |
Subject: Lyr Add: LAKES OF SLIGO (from Dermot O'Brien) From: GUEST Date: 27 Dec 05 - 11:21 PM I'm not sure where the last verse fits, but otherwise this is pretty much what Dermot O'Brien sings. LAKES OF SLIGO Fair Sligo thee I now must leave, To part thy beauty I do grieve, But not forever, I believe, I'll call again to Sligo. CHORUS: To Holy Well I bid adieu, To Hazelwood and Cairns too, And Toberknock that splendid view, Which adorns the lakes of Sligo. And fair Lough Gill with its isle so grand, Where we often wandered hand in hand, On a summer's evening by the strand, Along the lakes of Sligo. CHORUS And on that lake we often spent, Many an hour and quite content, And from our boat sweet music went, Around the lakes of Sligo. CHORUS Fair Sligo thee I now must leave, To part thy beauty I do grieve, But not forever, I believe, I'll call again to Sligo. CHORUS And then I think of Knocknarea, With its bonny cliffs hanging o'er the sea, It still reminds me of the day, I left my home in Sligo. CHORUS |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE LAKES OF SLIGO and EMIGRATION SONG From: Warsaw Ed Date: 28 Dec 05 - 05:27 PM I found another set of lyrics on a site with some songs from Carmel Gunning [http://villasubrosa.com/Nathan/imaps/gunning.html] THE LAKES OF SLIGO Fair Sligo thee I now must leave To part its beauty I do grieve But not forever I believe I'll call again to Sligo To Holy Well I bid adieu To Cairns Hill and Sligo too And (?) that splendid view Which adorns the lakes of Sligo And then I think of Knocknarea With its bonny cliffs hanging oer the sea It still reminds me of the day I left my home in Sligo On that lake I ofttimes spent Many's the hours in sweet content And from our boat sweet music went Around the lakes of Sligo Fair Sligo thee I now must leave To part its beauties I do grieve But not forever I believe I'll call again to Sligo EMIGRATION SONG It being in the spring and the small birds were singing Down by yon shady arbor I carelessly did stray Where the thrushes they were warbling, the violets were charming To view fond lovers talking a while I did delay She said, My dear don't leave me for another season Though fortune may be pleasing I'll go along with you I'll forsake friends and relations and quit this Irish nation And to the bonny Bann banks forever I'll bid adieu He said, My dear don't grieve me or yet deny my patience You know I love you dearly although I'm going away I'm going to a far nation to purchase a plantation To comfort us hereafter all in Amerikay Then after a short while if fortune does be pleasing Twill cause them for to smile at our late going away We'll be happy as Queen Victoria all in her greatest glory We'll be drinking wine and porter all in Amerikay The landlords and their agents, the bailiffs and their beagles The land of our forefathers we're forced for to give oer Now we're sailing on the ocean for honor and promotion And parting with our sweethearts, tis them we do adore If you were in your bed lying and thinking on dying On sight of the bonny Bann banks your sorrow you'd give oer For if you were one hour down in yon shady bower All pleasure would surround you, you'd think on death no more Then fare you well sweet Craigie Hill where oftentimes I've rovËd I never thought my childhood days I'd part you anymore Now we're sailing on the ocean for honor and promotion And the bonny boats are sailing way down by Doorin shore. I'm still looking for a vocal recording downloadable from the net. Ed |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lakes Of Sligo From: Fliss Date: 28 Dec 05 - 05:35 PM I have Carmel Gunning's CD. I treated myself to it at the Coleman Centre in Gorteen, Sligo, in 2003. Ive been learning it again recently, must give it an airing. Carmel doesnt have a chorus, but plays the second part of the tune. Fliss |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lakes Of Sligo From: David Ingerson Date: 28 Dec 05 - 05:38 PM You have accidently, no doubt, appended the words to what they have called "Emigration Song". It's usually called "Craigie Hill", a mighty song sung by Paddy Tunny, among others. David |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lakes Of Sligo From: Warsaw Ed Date: 29 Dec 05 - 09:29 PM David, I was wondering why the lyrics were so long! It seems they just tied into the next song on that site. Thanks Fliss! My last trip to Ireland was centered around County Mayo [my grandparents birth places]. Next time I'll have to go across to Sligo. Ed |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lakes Of Sligo From: Fliss Date: 30 Dec 05 - 08:30 PM Sligo is very wild and beautiful. I stayed with an Irish friend nr Gorteen for a couple of days and explored the area. We played in a couple of sessions in the local pubs. My friend is an excellent fiddler and she took me to see the Coleman Centre and suggested about 4 CDs as a must for me to buy... tunes and songs to learn. The Carmel Gunning CD 'Lakes of Sligo' is very good, well worth buying. She is an excellent whistle player. fx |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lakes Of Sligo From: GUEST,bas_ten_asbroek@yahoo.com Date: 18 Jan 06 - 04:26 AM Try the books "Where songs do thunder"and "The stone Fiddle"by the late Paddy Tunny. They include the song Craigie Hill which you call an emigration song. There are records by Paddy Tunny, I don'tknow about CD's. And give me a call when you come to the netherlands, then we can have a traditional singing session. Regards, Bas ten Asbroek |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lakes of Sligo From: Fliss Date: 04 Feb 06 - 06:27 PM Hi Carmel Your cd Lakes of Sligo is great. My friend Anne-Marie McGowan lives near Gorteen. I enjoyed the sessions in the village pubs. It was an honour to meet Peter Horan. I play english concertina and Anne-Marie taught me several new tunes ( she plays fiddle). She also took me thru Shule aroon line by line so I could pronounce the gaelic. THen suggested I buy your cd. Then I was very brave and sang it as one of my songs in the All Britain Fleadh... not that I got anywhere, or have done it again! But it was a great experience. slan fliss |
