On 12/28/1895 in St. Louis, Missouri, according to an article in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat of the next day, William Lyons (dockhand) was shot in Curtis's tavern by Lee Sheldon (carriage driver, nicknamed "Stag" Lee).
They'd been arguing politics when Lyons snatched Sheldon's hat from his head, whereupon Sheldon shot him. "Stag" Lee Sheldon was arrested and tried; the first trial ended in a hung jury, but the second ended in conviction, and he served time.
"I've seen the house where 'Stag' Lee lived at the time of the shooting, according to the newspaper story. It's still standing, although boarded up." -- Paul Stamler.
[However, a different story is given in Stagolee Shot Billy by Cecil Brown; published April 2003 by Harvard University Press; ISBN: 0674010566.]
The Tay Bridge Disaster occured 12/28/1879. There's a beautiful poem about it at Mudcat's Worst and it is also at taynet.co.uk
