I recently found out who wrote this song that I was searching for, and obtained a correct copy of the lyrics from him.
IT is on his and Robin Petrie's CD called "Journeys of the Heart", and is available through Celtoid/DNA Records, 725 Pomona Ave. Albany CA, 94706.

Barbara - You posted a midi of this song in April of 98, on another thread about this song. I just got around to importing it, and it doesn't sound like the version I know. The version I remember is more syncopated and probably in 6/8 rather than 4/4. Many of the notes are different, too.

Do you have Robin Petrie's CD and if so, does his version sound like your midi? I'm trying to decide whether to teach my band the version I know, or learn the version in your midi. I'm also going to try to get Robin's CD, but I thought a quick answer from you would save me some time transcribing.

ME TOO!! (Well, I haven't written a verse but I would write one and I'd love to hear yours, Clinton). I can't find the CD Barbara mentions anywhere on the web and the record company she mentions isn't listed in the phone directory, so I'm wondering if they're still in business.

So how about it - anyone have a recording they'd be willing to share? I'd actually prefer a tape to a MP3, and I'll pay you in chocolate chip cookies or whatever other kind you like.

I play it kinda quicker than Danny does, that's for sure... I sorta grab the song by the stones... makes up for the white-knuckle grip this song has on my soul!

And Suzan, if we can get it on MP3, I can make you a tape of it... so can you if you have a wee tape/cd player with Auxiliary inputs... it's actully quite easy to do...

But if it'll get me cookies, I'll glady tape it for ya!

Looks like we might be on our own, Clinton. A more detailed web search last night turned up the Pomona Ave address (in Barbara's message above) for Robin Petrie and Danny Karnahan, so I'm going to express mail them a request for their CD. If I get one, I'll send YOU a tape of the song (sorry, no MP3 capabilities here). In return, maybe you could send me the guitar chords you use?

I play the song in DADGAD tuning, in E I think... maybe sometimes F... Capoed 2nd or 3rd fret anyway...

The chords... well there's only 4 of them...

The main line is D and G...
With "If we're only packed to bursting...
Going D to Em, then the next line G, to A...

And that pattern is repeated throughout the song...

Is it Danny with a C or a K???

You're right, it's a C. I got it right on the mailing address. Thanks for the chords - our guitar player enjoys giving me a hard time if I bring a song to rehearsal without some indication of what the chords should be.

Hi gang, been away for a few days, and I will check. I sing the song in 4/4 the way I heard it; Danny wrote it in 6/8, I believe. I will check tomorrow. It's Carnahan with a C, I'll see if I can find you his current addy, and I probaby posted the tune to the handdown version I heard rather than his original. I do have his original tune (sheet music) around, as well as the CD, and I'll post that tomorrow. Cliff, I may have recently acquired the tools to make an MP3 file -- but haven't learned to use them yet. I think when we posted it in the Folknik, we provided chords, too. I will go and look. Tomorrow.

Well Clinton, I can put it up faster in Alan of Oz's program here, since I already know how to use that.
Danny says, in the notes he wrote to us when we published his song, that it is the first song he wrote in an open G tuning (CGDGBD).
Stay tuned while I turn it into a MIDI (to start), then if I get a chance I'll unzip the ripper I downloaded last week - BG - and start reading the directions.

MP3 rippers tend to be really easy to use... just start 'em up, pop the CD into the drive... select the track you want to rip and hit 'o.k.'

At least the good ones work that easily these days....

As far as the rest of the formats go, I have no idea what an "Oz's program" is... and MIDI's tend to bug the heck out of me...

Open G tuning eh?? I'm gonna have to give that a try... anybody got a good open G chord chart?

Clinton - Alan of Oz wrote a program that lets people convert midis to text that can be pasted into a thread and copied by other people who can convert it back to a midi. For people who need musical notation it's better than a recording or MP3. Most of the people in our band learn songs and tunes from printed music, so I plop the midi into Noteworthy Composer and create sheet music.

When Barbara puts the midi in this message (or she might start a new thread) there will be a link to Alan's programs in case you want to learn to use them. There's probably a link to them on the forum page too.

Open G - oh, Tom (our band's guitar player) is gonna love that.....

Say, Debra, we used Danny's transcription, I think, for the Folknik, but when I play it, it sounds like it should be in 6/8 not 3/4. If you're talking to him, you might ask him about the time (in the Folknik transcription). I will put his tune up tomorrow, but I think maybe it doesn't match the CD. I will give them both a listen tomorrow.
Clinton, try sitting on your hands while you wait. Some of us have to put in time in meatspace (as Jeri calls it). I'm a mom, and it's dinnertime here on the left coast.

Clint, I've got the CD, and I've got a question for you. Do you know why it is that some CDs won't play on my computer drive? This is one of them. It seems to have a clear silver band about 1/8 inch in from the beginning of the etching on the disc. Is this an anti-copying device? Or is it just my computer has tighter parameters than my sound system? (plays fine on my sound system.
Perhaps your napster colleague will have more success. Alternatively, will shipping a MIDI file to you as an attachment work?

Sorry to answer a question with more questions though, but I need more information...
The said CD, will play in your stereo?
This same CD is an original? Not a copy that someone made for you?
Can you tell me some system specs? PC? Mac? Sound Card? CD speed?
Are there any special error messages you get when you try to play the CD in your CDrom? Or does it just sit there?
When was the last time you ran a CD lens cleaner through your CDrom?

I don't really need a MIDI of the song at all... I know it well, I'm just looking for a copy to have for myself...

Now, Clinton, this is the program. When you download this, you can put the red text numbers into it, and it will create a MIDI for you. OR I can ship you the MIDI directly.
I see there are two places in the sheet music I have where there are eighth notes missing. I added one that I think is obvious, but the other is still there, in the sixth full measure.

It's a PC, the CD plays on my stereo just fine, haven't done the lens cleaner recently, will, but have noticed all along that a few CDs won't play here (AST computer -- ESSAudioDrive ), and it just sits there. Tells me there is no CD in the drive. It lies.

Hey everybody, I found Danny Carbahan. He is indeed still at Pomona Ave and is sending me the Journeys of the Heart CD. Here's what he told me about "Dram":

"Well, I think of it in a slow three, though the more manic might want to count it in a very fast 4 (in groupings of 12... more trouble than it's worth...) I'll be posting the lyrics (and all my other recorded lyrics) on my new website (www.dannycarnahan.com) in a week or two. It's always nice when people sing the lyrics I intended, rather than the charmingly misheard versions I've been sent over the years."

I gave him the Mudcat site so he could drop in on our discussion if he wants to.

By the way, in my explanation of midis I forgot to mention that you can play them (or your computer will, actually) so they're not only for people wanting notation. I've heard midis that had five staffs and were very complex - but they're still just computers doing music, so it's not the same as a recording of a real musician.
