I must admit I'm looking at this thread in connection with the Seekers. Nadia, the Seekers, and the Settlers were on a TV show which must have been in late 1964,which has been mentioned on this thread as "Sing Along", at least I think that's the show I remember. The show I saw was weekly, and the time slot of 6.30 doesn't sound far out. Each act would perform two songs. Nadia's name was definitely pronounced to rhyme with "moose", and I remember those highly amusing lyrics as being "we must not interrupt the telly vee". At the time we (my family) would probably assume that songs like that were self-penned, I certainly thought Nadia wrote this one, until five minutes ago. No doubt this is how the Seekers came to know this song. The Seekers seem to be a bit outside the scope of this thread, well they veered away from folk a bit, didn't they, however, I've recently been catching up with my 58 year love for the Seekers and Judith (of course), and have seen many, many videos of them from over the years. But as far as I can see, I haven't seen any from Singalong, including any from Nadia or the Settlers. At 71 now, I may only have another 29 years to search.
I'll just mention two more things, firstly that I do seem to have the idea the Seekers debuted "I'll never find another you" on this show, and secondly, I still carry the image of Judith banging that tambourine and hollering out gospel songs in that beautiful, powerful voice.

The Topic Folk Club in Bradford is 60 years old this year, 2016, operating weekly since late 1956 (apart from the odd closure, like Xmas Day). As part of recognising this feat I (as webster for the club) have been putting up a new old photograph each week.

We don't have all that many, but a few are from the early 60s, and this week's pictures are of Nadia Cattouse and Steve Benbow at the Topic in 1960 or 1961... http://topic-folk-club.org.uk/ Scroll down below this week's act (Kelly Oliver) and there you are. Eventually I'll put larger-size copies of all our photos on the site (Ramblin Jack Elliott, Alex Campbell & Joe Locker among them).

Unfortunately, we don't have a precise date for these Nadia Cattouse photos. Nadia doesn't appear in our gigs list. We have three dates for Steve Benbow appearances, without mention of Nadia, but records from that time are a bit patchy, especially a complete blank mid-1962 to mid-1964. As the photographer, Eddie Saxton, a club member, took photos of other acts whose dates we do know in late 1960 and early 1961, I think these pics are most likely either 1st October 1960 or 6th May 1961, but I could be wrong.

Yes Nadia Cattouse is the cause of much pride. Regarding the poster who wanted to find out more about the BH Forestry Unit that went out in 1941, I do hope he made contact with Mr Carlton Lebrun Fairweather, as was suggested by the anonymous guest in Oct 2008, for Mr Fairweather finally passed on in April 2011, at the age of 100!

A friend of mine had her 'Earth Mother', L.P. and ever since listening to it in the late 70.s, the memory of her singing 'Spring' has stayed with me as a favourite. Sadly the lyrics I've forgotten though the tune is remembered. Please , please , please will someone reissue this on c.d. so that we do not have to pay these exorbitant prices people are asking for their vinyl copies.
She was and is a gem, hidden in the vast sea of forgetfulness and indifference the media have towards less successful artists than others.

Just found this interesting web-site. Great to remember the folk song scene in the UK in the 60's and the TV appearances of Nadia Cattouse, Robin Hall and Jimmy McGregor. I wrote the song "If that is what you want" that Nadia sung on the TV series and the LP called "Songs of Grief and Glory". I still have the song book of the series and managed to get a copy of the LP on EBay after I lost my original copy.

What a fine post from Veronica (24.06.11). I can't match the epic consequences that she describes, but I once heard Nadia Cattouse sing, in the summer of 1964 or 65. It was in the White Hart pub, Drury Lane, London, which at the time had a folk night once a week, and I went to maybe 8 or 10 gigs altogether, before moving away. I don't remember any of the other singers, but Nadia was absolutely memorable. And of course her most memorable song was "Long time boy", which I already knew from Nina and Frederik's LP, but Nadia's version was much better. For weeks and weeks the song was what the Germans call an "ear-worm", I couldn't get it out of my head.
Then a few months later I met the love of my life, we lived in Italy, we had two children, I had a career, we had three grandchildren, and I forgot all about Nadia, the beautiful singer who had come to the White Hart. Now, 46 years later, it all comes back to me and it is such a pleasure to see all these happy memories of Nadia. I wish someone would issue a CD of some of her songs, I would buy it like a shot.
To Nadia I would like to say Thank you for a memorable evening, and to her family I would like to say how lucky you are to be related to such an illustrious person, so look after the old lady, for a lot of us remember her with great affection.

I have found this a really fascinating thread. It was great to read that Paddie Bell is still around - and in regular contact with Nadia! When I was a romantic 13 year-old and used to see them on "The Hootenany Show" on BBC on Friday evenings around 18:30, I just fell in love with both of them. Nadia was a regular guest at Canterbury Folk Club, most memorably for me 21st January 1966. One of the songs she sang was, 'Long time boy,' with its middle lines, ''..Say that you'll marry me tomorrow...'
I was with a boy I had met only 6 times before that evening. The following day he asked me to marry him. He's still here, 8 children and nine grandchildren....and I'm still singing.
I remembered this song last year and added it to my set. Then I realised the co-incidence.

Nadia was a lovely singer. I wonder if she still sings. I know I saw her in a BBC drama about, I think, the Windrush.

Nadia was born in 1924, and I grew up listening to her sing, since her son Mike Lindup and I went to school together - he was born in 1959, and I in 1958.

I hear from Mike every so often, but he appears to be on tour again, so will no doubt get a message some time in the future.

This thread brings back some happy memories from the 1960s when I was growing up.

Life was a lot simpler.

I am glad Nadia Cattousse is being recalled so affectionately on this thread, despite the whiff of muck-raking from one individual. I only knew her slightly, as a frequent guest at the Blakesly Arms, Forest Gate, club where I was resident while still a schoolboy in the early sixties. I remember her,not only as a fine performer, but as an approachable, warm human being whose company, however briefly, it was a pleasure to share. I have often wondered about her, and it's good to know that even after all this time she seems to be living a life which is true to the character I remember.

I remember when Long time boy a never see you was the # 1 song on Radio Belize hit parade. Her father was a Minister in goverment under George Price.Nadia was a member of NIP.The building that was once Radio Belize was named after her father Albert Cattouse Sr. He used to lived on Queen street across from Willy Whylie ice cream palor. I met Nadia in 1989 and I have remained friends with her. I endorse everything Errol Lloyd says. Nadia is a wonderful person. I have written about her acting career in my book Black in the British Frame - The Black Experience in British Film and Television (Continuum, 2001), but it saddens me that her music is not available on CD. I treasure an audio cassette I have of one of her brilliant 1960s record albums. In 2007 I screened 'Freedom Road' (1964) at the National Portrait Gallery. This award-winning television music documentary featured Nadia, Cy Grant and Cleo Laine. In 2008 I attended the opening of the Imperial War Museum's 'War to Windrush' exhibition and Nadia was there.

I met Nadia Cattouse in the late 1960's or early 70's - I can't be sure which, but at any rate it was after the height of her fame as a singer/entertainer and after she had been away from the limelight for some time. I was quite young at the time and had never seen her on television and only had a vague notion of her antecedents. For that reason, my current impression of her is not based on her past glory days, but on the sort of person she has shown herself to be subsequent to those days. Knowing her, spaeking to her, observing the way she conducts herself has convinced me that she has become a much more worthy and substantial figure than she was when a singer - even a famous one. In a quiet, self effacing way, she has gone about supporting a wide range of grass roots and community groups and organisations and the events they promote and keeping an alert and critical eye on cultural, social and political developments in the modern world. I hesitate to speculate as to how old she is at the moment, but she has always presented a somewhat serene, ageless and dignified image in public that is never showy or ostentatious. What is more she is today very intellectually alert and physically energetic. Whilst not being reclusive (she puts herself out and about when she chooses to), she has obviously put a value on her privacy, which needs to be respected, for this allows her the time she needs to pursue her wide range of interests. She is one of the most vital and wonderful human beings I have the pleasure to know. She would probably be embarrassed to read this, but there is little chance as I know she has so far resisted the world of the p.c.and the Mac. And incidentally I know for a fact that she is alive and well.

Someone suggested Nadia was at the celebrations after Cleo Laine was made a Dame by the Queen.   I doubt that somehow, unless there has been apologies all round.   Ms Cattouse cited Cleo as Co-Respondent in her divorce from Dave Lindup and only withdrew the allegation (which was false) at the eleventh hour.   There was quite a scandal about this in the British newspapers at the time...early 60's I think.
As far as I remember Nadia's popularity quickly faded after that.

These threads brought back some memories! I was backing guitarist for Nadia for a couple of years, after Martin Carthy was unable to continue to do it. This was 1966 I think. I appeared with her at two Edinburgh Festivals as well as various folk clubs and concerts.
However I've not heard anything of her since I got out of the folk scene in the early 70's.

In May '05 Bob asked who wrote Kelston Round Hill, and nobody seems to have replied. According to the sleeve notes in front of me it was written by Christopher Rowe of Kingston-upon-Hull. The only KRH I have found is 714' high and just to the NW of Bath, Somerset. The song was sung by Nadia, along with Tread Lightly, The Threshold, If That Is What You Want, People Like People Like Themselves, The Man For All Colours and Grief And Glory.

I have fond (although hazy) memories of Nadia on television in the 1960s. There was one program that I used to see her on fairly regularly, maybe "Hootenany" which someone mentioned or was it "Stramash"?

If Nadia is indeed still with us, I hope very much that she is well and knows that many of us remember her dearly.

You might be able to help me, so far I have a photo from the British national Archives and a little Information on the British Honduras Forestry department which left here in 1941 to go to Scotland. I just recently opened a museum in Cayo and have two friends who served with this department during the war. I want to erect a monument and paint all the names of the men who went, before they fade away into the past. So if you could gather any Information or copies of photos to help me this would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know what made me do a search on 'Nadia Cattouse' but I'm very pleased to see such a wealth of data in a still-live thread here.

Does anyone remember Nadia's brief song of domestic tragedy that went something like this :-

Hosannah!
I build me house, oh
Ahah!
I build it on the sandy ground,
Ahah!
...

[after which it gets destroyed by various weather conditions]

I've a recording of it somewhere, off air, from 1966. I think my favourite one, though, was "Good Luck to the Buck", which I'm sure must have been written by Sydney Carter, as he gives an intro to the song between verses one and two of Nadia's performance.

I remember seeing Nadia on TV much more recently, perhaps in the late 1980's or early 1990's? They referred to her earlier TV work and showed a brief clip of her as she now was.

Nadia's singing was certainly one of the inspirations that brought me into the folk movement.

I knew Nadia a little during the sixties. She, Sidney Carter, Donald Swann and I did some TV and folk places together in Edinburgh.
I only once heard her sing "Red and Green Christmas" and it haunts me still (though I can't remember the tune or words!). So far as I recall "Port Mahon" was writted be Sidney (who also wrote "Down Below", and "Lord of the Dance". Nadia sang it like magic.

She was a fine person and beautiful singer. Very happy to hear of her again.

I met Nadia at the Theatre in the Round in Stoke on Trent in 1966. The local Anti Apartheid Movement put on a show commemorating the anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre with a script my wife and I wrote. It was read by actors from the theatre; Nadia and a Keele student (Jeff Parton?) sang protest songs - I remember Crow on the Cradle. I think Ben Kingsley and Robert Powell were among the readers. Nelson Mandela's speech "Why I am prepared to die" closed the programme.The show was a sellout (in aid of AAM) and Nadia was moving beyond belief

This is fascinating, I just thought of her a day or two ago and was sent this thread, and all the memories are coming back- I already remembered Robin Hall and Jimmy McGregor and watching her in the 60s at the weekend. The only record I was able to find was a single on sale in the States, but the albums appear to be almost unobtainable, Earth Mother and especially the Nadia Cattouse one which is worth a lot of money. If anyone has any idea where I could get hold of one I'd be really happy. By the wasy, anyone remember the South African Jeremy Taylor? I just heard his EP 'Ag pleez Deddy' for the first time in 35 years after a similar search. Those were the days!

I must be young on this thread. I have heard about Albert Cattouse -- only because of the building that once housed Radio Belize -- but I've never heard anything about Nadia Cattouse. I have heard a song Peel Neck John Crow and I know that there is a person named Sylvia Cattouse here in Belize -- she works/worked with the University of Belize.

This stuff is interesting.

I am interested in knowing more about Belizeans who have contributed in history. My most enlightening read this year was Baymen. The one by Forbes -- published by Stephen Fairweather.

I will ask Daphne Navarette who is a friend of Nadia Cattouse. When I lived in England in the 60s I met her. Her husband either played in the band with John Dankworth or managed John Dankworth. What is interesting is that my husband and I went to see Cleo Laine and her son was selling her CDs and I mentioned that I grew up in Belize and knew Nadia. He was quite pleased as he grew up knowing her as a family friend. I believe she attended the gala when Cleo Laine became a dame by the queen.    Will call Daphne and find out what she knows as the last time she visited London, I believe she stayed with Nadia.


I am also interested in writing about the men from Belize who went to England during WWII. My grandmother always talked of one man, Mr. Thurton from York Street who went and never came back. I met his daughter here in Los Angeles, and found out about another man, I believe his name is Parades. Know his daughter. That would be quite a story.

Never saw this thread before, but then Harry knows everyone and everything going on.

I am a Belizean-America sociologist living in Los Angeles who found this thread quite interesting. As a child I heard a lot about Nadia Cattouse from my mother and even heard her on the BBC. Because one of my areas of interest is Belizean migration her story (biography) has been of interest to me. There are many Newswpaper articles on her in Old Belizean (British Honduran) newspapers like the Clarion and Billboard. I know for instance that while her father Albert Cattouse was a supporter of the People's United Party (and a cabinet minister in the Price government) she was a supporter of the then National Indedendence Party (perhaps because her mother was a Fairweather) in the late 1960s. She also knew one British Honduran who migrated to Britain in 1919 by the name of Arthurs (article from the Billboard).I know a little bit more about her biography, but there is more to her story that I would like to know. Back in the early 1980s a Belizean in England Amos Ford published a book on the experience of British Honduran men serving in a forestry unit in Scotland during WWII. Regrettably, she is a historical figure (like Belizean Samuel Haynes and Ludwig Lightburn in the U.S.) but nothing substantive has been written about her and her family in Britain. She figures prominently in the history of Blacks in Britain and Belizeans in Britain. I had the pleasure of working with Nadia in the mid-sixties at the Prince Charles Theatre (now I believe a cinema). I was accompanist to Dominic Behan and Nadia in Dominic's satirical show 'Behan, Behan,Behan'. The show also featured Alex Cambell, Nigel Denve and The Haverim. My favourite Nadia song was Zombie Jamboree (I'd love to get hold of the lyrics). Nadia was real real pro and a very kind and caring person.

I am maried to Trevor Cattouse who is the son of Roy Cattouse who is Nadia's brother. Would love to make contact with Nadia as we lost touch several years ago. Seems that she is still around. Her brother, Roy formaly British Honduras Middle weight boxing champion died back in 1997. My husband Trevor who was also a former professional boxer, was in touch with Nadia via his father, and used to visit her when she lived in Raynes Park.

Yes that's the look of Nadia I remember. I worked with her on a BBC training programme in Kensington House about 1970. Steve Benbow, Brian Brocklehurst, a.n. other, and the wonderous voice of Nadia Cattouse (whose final syllable sounds like 'moose').
There was a Gershwin song, Port Mahon, and another, perhaps Brel, number.
She was wonderful!

Nadia Cattouse is still around, living in Wimbledon though spending much time in Scotland, firly recently re-recorded "Red and Green Christmas" with her son Michael Lindup on piano (BTW, he played keyboard, not bass, with Level 42).
I doubt it's been released..... pity, as she sounds stunning.
She occasionally writes me letters or phones me in Australia for long chats..... must be my turn to figure out the time difference.....

Was Nadia Cattouse really mid-forties when she performed on 'sing along' and 'Hootenany' c.1964-5? She didn't look it as I recall, nor does she on 1966 Reality RY 1001 cover.Mike Lindup, her son was born in March 1959:even if she was born in 1920 that makes her quite old to be a mum in 1950s for first or 2nd time.
Sleeve notes say she wrote poetry as well as her songs under the pseudonym of Eva Dayne.Were any published?
I recall the Melody Maker review (Karl Dallas ?)of RY1001 said her version of Dylan's 'Don't Think Twice'was the best he'd heard. I agreed then and have heard nothing since to modify this view.She merits a compilation C.D.particularly in view of the sheer variety of her music and her role in early u.k. black history. I wonder if her son could help re this? He looks strikingly like her incidentally.
'Sing Along' and 'Hootenanny' were both shown midweek on BBC at around 6.30 I think.On one of them the Seekers made what was probably their debut with 'I'll never find another you.'Hard to imagine a t.v folk based show with Martin Carthy etc promoting a U.K. No. 1 now!

Her 'Earth Mother' is an example of an album that should be put out on CD.Some great songs with some good backing men (Andy Roberts,Danny Thompson)Some of it recorded live at the 1969 Edinburgh festival.

I've always assumed that she is still with us as I've heard nothing to the contary.

I know someone posted a link to what I understand to be her son's website here a few years ago. Today, I tried it, twice at www.mikelindup.com and both times when I clicked on the Enter or Bypass Intro, it went to a completely white screen and locked up my computer. Ctrl-Alt-Delete didn't even get me out of there. Anyone else have this problem?

Seems we still can't decide whether Nadia Cattouse is sill alive (and does anyone know whether her surname rhymes with "house" or "ooze"? There also seems some uncertainty about whether Cyril Tawney or Matt McGinn wrote "There are no lights on our Christmas tree". Matt McGinn is I think dead, and Cyril's memory may not be that reliable, as according to the sleeve notes on "In Port" (1963; his 1st album, if I remember correctly)he forgot that he had written one of the songs on this album ("In the Sidings") but fortunately Louis Killen learned the song and taught it to Tawney again!

Perhaps Murray McLeod could contact Paddie Bell again who could then get Nadia to confirm her continued existence!

I agree that Port Mahon was Nadia's best. It's about time there was a CD version made from old tape masters like the Corrie Folk Trio and Paddie Bell one.
I always thought that the Lights on the Xmas Tree was attributed to Matt McGinn. Definitely his style.

Steve Benbow's protege is either winding us all up or has been wound up himself.

I am not personally acquainted with Nadia Cattouse but I do know Paddie Bell (ex Corrie Folk Trio) and she assures me that she corresponds by letter or phone with Nadia two or three times a month.
If she has died, which I very much doubt, her demise must have occurred within the last few days.

Cyril Tawney not only sang 'There Are No Lights Round Our Christmas Tree', he wrote it. He recently told me that Australian group 'The Seekers' had asked permission to record it for their Christmas album.

Of course it is not unknown for folk musicians to be "Twained" (a la Mark Twain, rumours of whose death was "greatly exaggerated"). Dave Swarbrick, fiddler with Fairport Convention, whose death was erroneously announced in the Daily Telepgraph some years ago (he was ill, but recovered). I also saw on the Internet (?Mudcat) where another folk singer was twice erroneosuly reported as dying, though I can't remember the name; I think it MIGHT have appeared in the thread to do with the the song "I'm a man you don't meet every day" but it could have been another folk music forum.

I am also reminded of a letter receved by the late Field Marshall (later Lord) Bernard Montgomery of El Alamein:

"Dear Sir, I thought you were dead. My father says you are still alive but will die soon."

Or the following, attributed to Reverend William Archibald Spooner, who is credited with inventing "spoonerisms" (the verbal equivalent of "transposition errors").
"Tell me, was it you or your brother who was killed during the war?"

Interested to hear (if I understand "Sheila", 25.1.2003) that it was Cyril Tawney who sang the song

"There are no lights upon our Christmas Tree
We must not spoil the Telly-Vee

Although her career was concentrated into less than ten years, she was an prominent and visible part of the folk scene, esp. through TV work. Contributed one song to each of two volume anthology Edinburgh Folk Festival on Decca '64, allegedly recorded live at the festival but in fact put down in a studio hired for the recording sessions. In the mid '60s she appeared on the television "God slot' programme Hallelujah alongside performers such as Sydney Carter and Martin Carthy; contributed to the Fontana album Songs From "Hallelujah '66. Other performances appeared on the Waverley, Parlophone and Reality labels. With Robin Hall and Jimmie McGregor she made Songs of Grief & Glory '67. Signed to RCA, who released albums Earth Mother '70 (prod. by Sandy Robertson) and the various artists' anthology 49 Greek Street '70. Her son, Michael Lindup, went on to play bass with Level 42.

I asked steve when we were giging last night. Steve said she died 5 yrs ago. He said that she was A.T.S during the war so even if she was alive she would be in her mid eighties. Steve was her guitar player alot on T.V and she also used the rest of Steve's band i.e Robin Hall, Cedric West, Jimmie Macgregor.

Nadia Cattouse sings "Red and Green Christmas" on "Club Folk Voluume 1" and "B.C. People" and "All Around My Grandmother's Floor" on "Club Folk Volume 2" (Peg Records, PS2 and PS3, both 1972).

Mention is made in a previous posting (Big Tim 7.4.2002) of a line of hers "We musn't spoil the tellyvee [sic]"!

I seem to remember the verse in a song about the commercialisation of Christmas (so what's new?:

"There are no lights upon our Christmas Tree
We must not spoil the Telly-Vee
No party games, no mistletoe
Just whistle Wenceslas and out (?or off) you go"

(I can even remember the tune!). However I cannot remember whether it was sung by a man or woman, though if the latter it may have been Nadia Cattouse. There seemed to be much more folk on TV in the old days, eg Robin Hall and Jimmy McGregor, Julie Felix, Cy Grant, Shirley Abacur (may be mis-spelled), etc. ITV used to have a program with Wally Whyton and I think Bert Weedon (was this folk music - Fred wedlock's "With Bert Weedon's help one day I'll be the best" makes me think so. However I only remember it because there was a glove puppet called "Pussy Cat Willum" and we names our cat Willum after that. As Willum died in 1973 about the age of 13, it must have been about 1960 or so, and as we moved house in February 1961 but had the cat in our last house, this narrows it down somewhat. Seem to have got off the subject of Nadia Cattouse a bit, but perhaps this will stir a few memories!

I wonder if the surname rhymes with "ooze" rather than "house"?

I have very fond memories of Nadia singing in Birmingham cellar folk club in the sixties. As an impressionable teenager she had a real impact on me both her voice and looks were the tops!

I have the record and book of the Tv programme, with Nadia Cattouse, Sydney Carter, Robby Hall and Jimmy McGreggor (Check spelling!).

The songs were sent in as a competition - sevral songs we still perform - Kelstone Roudhill, Back Buchannan Street etc.

Not sure when it went out Sunday in the late '60s I would think.

I also liked Julie Felix - and whilst down in Somerset this year we saw her at the local hall in Glastonbury - it would appear that she now lives in that area.

Looking forward to anymore info....

Yes, they were brilliant programmes. There is, if you are lucky (and I was lucky) an LP of the series you may discover at record fairs. It also features Sydney Carter and Isla Cameron. Wonderful. Anyone know about Nadia nowadays?

I remember Nadia Cattouse singing on a television programme in the 60s. She used to be accompanied by a young guitar player who very occasionally got a solo spot. His name was Martin Carthy. I wonder what ever happened to him?
